Re: Boardwalk Empire -- Season Finale -- "To the Lost" -- 12/11/11

I'm still hung up on the letting Eli slide because he said he wanted no part of the plot to kill Nucky. Eli lied his ass off and got Jimmy killed. Was Nucky planning on killing Jimmy even before talking to Eli and getting his bullshit story? The wrong person died and I still don't understand it. Nucky called Rothstein and asked him if it would be OK if Horvitz disappeared almost as if the plan was to let Jimmy kill him and then both of them whack Eli. And then things changed.

I actually thought the whole chain of events was pretty sloppy.

It's drama, CRM. We know what Eli's really thinking; Nucky doesn't.

Unless Nucky needed Eli to go to jail to put an end to the inquiry into his dealings. Then when Eli gets out in a year or 2 there's plenty of time for him to "re-enlist".

As to Horvitz, he didn't really do anything to Nucky and maybe Nucky sees him as being useful in the future in some dealings or other.

If the deed does go to the church what will Nucky do to Margaret? He's out in the field drinking champagne while his fortune is slipping away.

If it were all laid out neat with a pretty bow on top it wouldn't be half as interesting.

Oh, and I guess I need to use smileys more.

It felt like a series finale. The show is all downhill now...

Why? The way I see it, this frees them up to make someone else interesting the heavy. Look at all the old-school gangsters this show has. Why should we waste an entire series watching Jimmy (who was never a good leader to begin with) go head-to-head with Nucky? I'm interested in seeing Capone & co. in action now.

This was a great episode and it proves that you can't always expect certain people to make it out alive (ok, maybe Nucky). I'm excited as all hell for S3!

You'd think Nucky was smart enough to see the bullshit and who was lying and who was telling the truth. Regardless, Jimmy still was the "boss" at the time and is probably all that mattered.

And honestly Nucky probably felt the bigger pangs of betrayal from Jimmy than he did from his known piece of shit brother Eli.

I think he did to some degree, but blood is thicker than water, he has said so himself.. Plus Jimmy was trying to take his place, the would-be king had to be the fall guy. Eli was just a soldier for someone else.

I guess I'm going to have to watch the ending again. I thought Nucky called Jimmy to tell him he had Waxey Gordon, not Manny Horvitz.

Nucky called Al Rothstein and asked him if he would have an opinion on Manny Horvitz one way or the other. He asked as a "courtesy" because Manny was a former associate/colleague of Waxy Gorden who is a mutual "friend" of both Nucky & Al.

They set it up for us to believe that Nucky was willing to off Manny and protect Jimmy. A red herring of sorts. Later, Jimmy gets a call from Nucky saying he's located Manny for him. One could believe that he's delivering him to Jimmy to be killed but obviously he knows differently.

Did anyone notice the phone ringing while nucky was talking to the lawyer, then the tea pot whistling while he was talking to margaret. It seemed strange and both things annoyed him. Maybe foreshadowing or something, but I can't figure out what.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- Season Finale -- "To the Lost" -- 12/11/11

Interview is pretty enlightening. I don't know why they'd go to all that trouble to knock of Jimmy. Why have Nucky go and talk with Jimmy? Why the ruse about Manny? Why not just send a crew to knock him off? I guess that's why I got lost in what the writers were intending.

Judging from the interview, Lucy is gone. Too bad.

You mean like a bell ringing on a boat, then on a door?

I'm guessing Nucky felt he owed Jimmy at least one talk, maybe he wasn't certain yet. And I think it was setup that way, because Nucky felt he had to do it - goes back to the whole half a gangster thing, he can't keep delegating, he has to cross the line at some point. And I'm guessing it was done where it was and not at Jimmy's house, because writers like dark rainy spots like that for waxing someone..

And unless Lucy was going to get naked some more, then no big loss.

The way I see the show, the show is based on a supporting cast of characters so it gives them freedom to go wherever they want. Sure Nucky is the main character, but there are so many stories that they can tell that they can flesh out (Chicago/Capone, NY/Rothstein, Lucky, etc.)

As with the Sopranos, that show was really about Tony, and he was the central character in everything. If the show focused away from Tony too much, I always felt it lacked something, but if Boardwalk Empire's Season 3 isn't all about Nucky, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Yeah, you're talking about a show that has some of the all-time greatest known gangsters in it (luciano, capone, siegel -although barely introduced so far, and a little less well known -rothstein and lansky). They have lots of places they can go with the story.

Someone already mentioned it, but it would have been nice to see Margaret go all in on the Gangster Train with Nucky.

Everytime we see these kinds of set ups, its like the husband is gangsta/but the wife is kept out of it/disapprove.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- Season Finale -- "To the Lost" -- 12/11/11

The show is called "Boardwalk Empire" not Broadway Dynasty or The Wabash Chronicles. It has to be about Nucky and it has to be set in Atlantic City...or it would be dumb.

Hopefully Nucky whacks Peg and brings Lucy back. Lucy would be all in.

This season was only made better by her complete absence in the 2nd half.

That actress is terrible.

Hell no! lol

I never watched the Sopranos but Boardwalk Empire is better.

What will happen with Jimmys mother? Will she get wacked or will she try to form an alliance with somebody and get revenge on Nucky.

Maybe Richard Harrow can start banging her now since Jimmy is gone.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- Season Finale -- "To the Lost" -- 12/11/11

I think it was a mistake to kill off Jimmy. I get why they did it, and it was an interesting, ballsy plot development, but I Jimmy's character was really starting to come into his own. I would say he was regarded as the main character on the show along with Nucky, and probably more well liked. I see ratings taking a huge hit next season and potentially a short run for this series as a result. Which would be kind of tragic, since this second season was excellent overall.

Someone on another site compared the decision to kill off Jimmy with Jesse from Breaking Bad. In the latter case, the producers wisely decided against killing him off.

There are still lots of interesting characters on Boardwalk, so I hope they can fill the void. Richard better come through as a much more important character.

I totally dug Margaret signing away the land though! Damn... that poor priest is going to take a lot of shit I have a feeling.
