Eli Roth's History of Horror (AMC) -- documentary series -- Premieres 10/14/18
AMC’s year-round documentary series AMC Visionaries is making the leap from outer space to your nightmares with Eli Roth’s History of Horror. Starting October 14, The Hostel and The House with a Clock in Its Walls director will produce and host the seven-part series, each episode bringing together iconic horror filmmakers, actors, writers, make-up wizards, and monster maestros to discuss the past, present, and future of film’s most bloodcurdling genre.
Names set to appear on History of Horror include Stephen King, Jordan Peele, Jason Blum, Linda Blair, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rob Zombie, Quentin Tarantino, and more. The series will kick off with an episode digging through the guts of the zombie genre, followed by back-to-back installments exploring horror’s most stab-happy form, the slasher film. A few films scheduled to be discussed and dissected are Psycho, The Shining, Get Out, Interview With The Vampire, Night of the Living Dead, and plenty more from the classic spookshow canon.
Check out our exclusive trailer below. AMC Visionaries: Eli Roth’s History of Horror premieres on AMC Sunday, October 14.

I enjoyed the 1st episode for the most part. But, it was a little too heavy on The Walking Dead. Go figure.
They did go a lot into George Romero's Day of the Dead series. I liked seeing some of the behind the scenes footage and stills of the practical effects.
The only thing that annoyed me was them bleeping out the language. Really? This aired at Midnight ET on Sunday and they bleeped out shit.

I really liked this. Used great clips and good, knowledgeable speakers that have some tie to horror genre. Look forward to slasher part 1 and 2, on back to back nights...

Don't have AMC, so will have to find this elsewhere. Horror documentaries are equal to trailer collections as far as a viewing choice I never have to think about.
Turn me loose on Netflix, and I'll never be able to pick something to watch, but put one damn horror documentary on there and I'm set in an instant.

This is in SD only on my On Demand ffs. Thankfully it's streaming in HD on the AMC app, I'll DVR the rest.
That said it was a bit off to hear them talk about Shaun of the Dead as the rebirth and then go back and talk about 28 Days Later which was released 2 years earlier. Rob Zombie was there, said maybe 5 words.

I thought the episode on Zombies was highly pretentious and had some of the same problems which AMC's series on Sci-Fi contained. The archival interview footage with George Romero was its high point.

Eh, it was ok. It was more "Zombie Movies 101", with an emphasis on Romero's trilogy, which is fine. Not a lot of history (White Zombie, Plague of the Zombies, etc), and virtually ignored the Italian contributions minus a couple of unnarrated clips of Fulci's Zombie. A little of the fast vs. slow argument. And yes, a lot of talk about The Walking Dead, but whaddya want? It's easy for AMC to get people to talk about it (since they're on the AMC payroll), and let's face it, The Walking Dead's popularity is what allowed AMC to make the series in the first place.

I mentioned in the October Challenge thread that it was a big surprise to see Steve Miner suddenly pop up in the Slashers episode. The guy's been completely AWOL throughout all the special edition releases/re-releases of Friday The 13th (Parts 2 & 3) as well as the mammoth documentary, Crystal Lake Memories.
It's cool to hear what Tarantino (Briefly) had to say about the Halloween sequels!

I know it's Eli Roth's History of Horror, but Thanksgiving was not an 80s slasher, it wasn't even a real movie! Don't think we didn't see you sneak it in with the rest of those slasher flick title cards.

The 2 episodes on Slashers I thought was pretty good. I especially liked the 2nd part.
I enjoyed the interviews with Tobin Bell and Leigh Whannell about the Saw series. They also went a lot into the Scream series.

I know AMC is pulling the strings, but I wish they'd hit up less mainstream examples of the genres they discuss. Like in the Slashers eps, why not include a little about the Italian Giallo films of the early 70s? Especially since Carpenter's Halloween borrows a lot from them (hands of the killer, the music and credits of Halloween are basically a copy of Argento's Deep Red)
Next is demonic movies. Can you imagine if they included nunsploitation as a sub-topic??

I think they stuck to discussing mainstream titles because that's the audience that's watching The Walking Dead and AMC. Not USC or NYU film school or DVD Talk horror film nerds.
I think Roth and AMC wanted to keep the subject matter to mostly familiar content.

Oh, I get that, but why not add a little more of the obscure to the familiar content? You can have both. It would be nice if today's generation had a "Terror in the Aisles" of their own. For those of us in the pre-internet age, that compilation was a literal checklist of movies for me to rent when our family finally got a VCR. It's kind of hard to believe that someone who's a fan of horror movies today has never seen Saw, Hostel, Scream, etc. I say talk about those movies, but also talk about what movies influenced those movies as well.
And to be fair, they did include several scenes from Maniac, which is hardly a mainstream film. I guess I'm just saying I'd like to see more of that.

I'm guessing the celebrity hosts that AMC gets for these kind of shows have very little control over the content. They show up and talk a bit.

I understand they wanted to include some discussion of Get Out (and I agree with its inclusion), does it really fit with demonic possession and religious movies like Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and The Omen?

I thought the demonic possesion episode was the best one yet.
