Whitney -- "First Date" -- 9/29/11

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
When Whitney (Whitney Cummings) realizes that she and Alex (Chris D'Elia) have never gone on an official first date, she comes up with an unusual idea to recreate the past. Taking this very seriously -- as only Whitney can -- she insists that they follow all of the "rules" of a first date, thus the two awkwardly go to dinner and cap off the night by sleeping in separate apartments. This gives Alex and Mark (Dan O'Brien) a rare opportunity for some much needed guy time. Meanwhile, totally embodying a post first date attitude, Whitney and Roxanne (Rhea Seehorn) spend some quality girl time plotting Whitney's next move with the "new guy," but when Lily (Zoe Lister-Jones) finds out what's going on she recruits Neal (Maulik Pancholy) to help her stage a "chance" encounter between the two lovebirds.

Another show that got shit on pretty hard by most of the posters here. Let's see how many who comment this week actually watched this week.

Not me! I think that Cummings is painful to watch and listen to!

Second chance, same as the first: unfunny.

From now on I think I'll just sit quietly between The Office and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I gave it a second chance and wish I could go back in time and prevent myself from watching this. Nothing funny about this show at all.

The laugh track wasn't quite as obnoxious this time around. Still painfully unfunny.

Re: Whitney -- "First Date" -- 9/29/11

Well, *I* though this episode was much better than the pilot. Agreed about the audience\laugh track not being as bad as before, and I think the jokes were a little less "paint-by-numbers" than the pilot. I think this could actually be a decent show with some tweaking. Perhaps it's ripe for the old "Match Game Treatment"*. Hell, I dunno - I haven't watched a sitcom with a laugh track in so long that my perception might be skewed. As I said in last week's thread, I find Whitney Cummings strangely hot, and will give this at least one more episode.

* - The first few episodes of The Match Game were very conventional and, frankly, quite boring. CBS told the producers that it wasn't going to renew the show, so the writers started slipping double entendres and innuendo in for kicks, and the show became a big hit.

I liked it better than the pilot too. I find Whitney, the performer, very watchable and hope the show continues to improve.

This is actually taped in front of a live studio audience, there is no laugh track or canned laughter.

People in this forum really need to stop saying this.

Newsflash: Even when they say that it is "taped in front of a live studio audience" it still has canned laughter.

People erupt in laughter for 3 seconds and all stop at the same second?

So if you are laughing, you and hundreds of others can just stop at exactly the same moment?

But with this show, I'm sure that sign is needed. Nothing here is natural.

Most shows with live audiences have unnaturally forced laughter. It's no different here.

Re: Whitney -- "First Date" -- 9/29/11

Gave it a second chance. Verdict:

While this was perhaps a smidgen better, I still found it terribly unfunny with annoyingly souped up laughter.

I don't see how this is a good fit with their Thursday night comedy block. Its vibe, for lack of a better word, doesn't seem to gel with what Community, P&R or The Office represent.

I'm out.

Was there this much discussion/hate about laugh tracks and such last season? It just seems like everyone just decided it was uncool to have laughing going on during comedies in either fake or real form.

Let's look at Thursday's lineup:

Community: No laugh track. Very funny.
Parks & Recreation: No laugh track. Fucking hilarious.
The Office: No laugh track. Very funny.
Whitney: Laugh track?! Terribly unfunny.

In short, it wouldn't be such a big deal if it were on a different network.

Whitney is the female Dane Cook. She's gotten by on looks and this so-called "edgy" image she has created.

Re: Whitney -- "First Date" -- 9/29/11

I can see soem potential in this show, but it really is pretty bad. Looks like NBC is back to only two decent comedies on Thursdays, at least until 30 Rock comes back. Although, The Office is slipping as well. At least Community seems to still be going strong.
