I was really disappointed. The books are so much better.

Nice poll questions. Now Dj, the question is. What gets watched live..and what gets DVR'ed. GoT or the Killing.

Sorry, I shouldn't have referenced the books in the poll choices since I know alot here didn't read the books including myself. You can still vote in all the choices even if you didn't read the books.

Re: Game of Thrones -- Season Finale -- "Fire and Blood" -- 6/19/11
I'll be curious to see if anyone votes for "I pirated it" (yes, paraphrased), especially since we can all see who votes for which options. HBO at $10/month (4 episodes per month = $2.50/episode) is well worth it in this case. But I know for some people, it's not as simple as just purchasing HBO. Sometimes they make you upgrade to certain tiers/packages before you can even add on premium channels, and that's where the cost can get prohibitive (if you're not already in those tiers).
I spent a good chunk of time after last week's episode thinking that was the finale. It was only after reading a post here that I realized there is another episode to go.
I haven't really been able to comment on the finale because it was just so dramatic for me. It'a make-believe, but man... I had so many different emotions to Ned's demise. But most of all, I didn't really want to say anything that would distract from the fact that I thought it was an excellent episode, and an excellent series. Kudos to all involved.
It almost seems redundant at this point to say the synopsis above doesn't sound too promising. If anyone is still expecting "promising" at this point, you haven't been paying attention. We're getting a ruthless story here, and we're going to have to look for the rays of sunshine amidst the general darkness whereever we can find them, such as Arya. Unless of course, she's killed this week. If you've read the books, you know whether or not that happens. But if you haven't, can you be sure?
I think that's one reason why Ned's demise is so gutting. There are precious few characters we can look at who hold honor in such high regard. If we want people to behave honorably, we need people to show that's an acceptable / rewarding life path to take. But when the people who take that path are stripped of their honor and killed (to the cheers of the crowd), what does that leave? I could go oin for pages about why Ned's demise was so gutting. I've saved each episode and I"ll definitely be rewatching the whole season before Season 2 starts.

Re: Game of Thrones -- Season Finale -- "Fire and Blood" -- 6/19/11
as to the poll question I answered ... "Loved it!"
I would have answered ...
"Watched the show and loved it, didn't "pay for HBO" because I got it for 3 months free from Directv, will cancel after the 3 months is up but will renew again when season 2 comes along"
.... but that was not an option listed
hopefully there is a nice blu ray set that will be released shortly after season's end with some good extras

I know I'm way late to the party, but I just watched episode 9 last night after I got home from work and holy cow! Killing off your lead in the 1st season is pretty much unheard of.
Question for those who read the books. You don't need to spoilerize it. Was Ned killed off this early?

I haven't read the books, but I can tell you yes. This also leads me to the obvious conclusion that Ned wasn't ever the hero of the story. He's like the Franz Ferdinand of this series; his death is the powder keg.

Clearly Cersei is the hero of the story. Just a nice lady trying to make it in a mans world.

If you're trying to figure out who the heroes of the story are, you're not paying attention. There are no heroes. There are no villains. There are just people, trying their damnedest to do what they think is right for themselves and for the people they care about. I don't think there is a single character who is either entirely sympathetic or entirely unsympathetic.

But as long as we're talking about relatively sympathetic characters, how about Dany?

Re: Game of Thrones -- Season Finale -- "Fire and Blood" -- 6/19/11
Even in the novels Arya and Jon are clearly meant to be the heroes. Saying there "are no heroes" is just ignorant. No matter how "adult" you may believe it to be, A Song is still a fantasy story. There are shades of grey, yes, but there are also still good guys and bad guys.
And yes, Dany is also one of the good guys. She also whines a good deal.
