Television for the young: Yo Gabba, Handy Manny etc.
So parents out there, if you let your young watch tv, what are they watching? Our son looooooves Yo gabba gabba, Special Agent Oso, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Play with me Sesame.
Out of all of those, I think I enjoy Yo gabba gabba the most, they have the most interesting segments, and I love how they get bands etc to come in and play songs. The one that I am most annoyed with is Mickey Mouse clubhouse. That hot dog song just drives me nuts. Anything else out there that is good/bad? |
Re: Television for the young: Yo Gabba, Handy Manny etc.
For the longest time we only let him watch Yo Gabba Gabba which he loves. We have most of the episodes and he just watches them over and over (he's almost 16 months). Sometimes he'll watch Wonder Pets but it doesn't hold his attention like YGG. He also likes Little Einsteins and Micky Mouse Clubhouse, but it's mainly YGG.
We try to limit his TV viewing as much as possible, but there are just times where we have to occupy him with something to get things done around the house! |
Re: Television for the young: Yo Gabba, Handy Manny etc.
Kind of a related note - but Netflix now streams season 1 of Yo Gabba Gabba. Whoever is in charge over at Netflix streaming is brilliant for pursuing all the kid programming they have.
I remember seeing the Aquabats in concert some years back thinking they'd probably eventually become a kid show of some sort, wasn't surprised when the MC Bat Commander started YGG and it was a pretty big hit. Really nice guy, even when your drunk friends are complaining about their new lack of wind instruments. |
Re: Television for the young: Yo Gabba, Handy Manny etc.
Hrmm Netflix streams yo gabba gabba? Might be a worthy investment. If I hear the pajama song by smoosh one more time for the sleep episode..I might just lose my mind lol.

Re: Television for the young: Yo Gabba, Handy Manny etc.
Netflix is like 40% childrens programming, 40% obscure ultra violent movies, 20% mainstream
They now carry the first season of Yo Gabba Gabba, the first 2.5 seasons of Phineas and Ferb, roughly 5 seasons of Fairly Odd Parents, 4 seasons of Dora, etc; I'm not a parent but I let a friend of mine who is use my Netflix acct on their PS3. I wind up logging in and have a play list of 4 kid shows followed by whatever I'd been watching prior (I Saw the Devil was the last), it's a funny mix. |

Yo Gabba Gabba, Phineas and Ferb and classics like Looney Tunes are in the mix these days (they are now 5 and 7 years old) but we did a lot of Dora, Handy Manny and Mickey Mouse when they were younger. Now they find random shows like Kung Fu Dino Posse on Netflix. Those cartoons are weird. I just tossed Bravestarr to the top of the queue. Maybe they'll pick up on that one. |

Yeah, having 3 seasons of Backyardigans on Netflix really helped me out. :)

That, and my 3 year old really likes the Busytown Mysteries. |

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Bravestarr? Classic!
By far the best show for both parents and kids is Phineas and Ferb. Great, great show. I'll watch it without my kids. Only show we effectively "banned" in our house is Caillou. Cannot stand that whiny brat, and our toddler got noticeably more whiny when watching it. |
Re: Television for the young: Yo Gabba, Handy Manny etc.
Imagination Movers is a bomb kid's show. Good music, good message. The kid also likes Caillou. I find him annoying but he loves it, so whatever.

I don't have kids, but I love Charlie And Lola. DVD Talk has some good reviews of it up, which is how I learned about it. I think it's a show that kids and adults can really enjoy; it also has a lot of good moral and practical life lessons, but it isn't heavy handed about them. Just search around YouTube and you can probably find an episode or two to give you an idea about the show. Honestly, I can't recommend it enough.

I love Phineas And Ferb, Imagination Movers, Shaun The Sheep and Charlie & Lola. I don't know if it's on anymore, but I was a big fan of Hamtaro.

That, and my 3 year old really likes the Busytown Mysteries. Both he and my 5 year old like Wordworld and Super Why, but they only have a few episodes of those. And yeah, Shaun the Sheep has been a huge hit. |

While looking for Backyardigans..Found Ne Hao, a pre-schooler cartoon that teaches basic Chinese? INteresting.

Considering the financial crisis, most kids will be fluent in a generation or two, may as well teach the future parents :)

I heard there would be new characters for the 4th season, does anyone know if they are going to be retiring some of the existing characters.

No love for the Wub? My 2-year-old daughter loves Wow Wow Wubbzy. The little interstitial songs are quite enjoyable.
