The Episodes in the Audition Process
There will be auditions in five cities, then the Las Vegas Callbacks and the revelation of the Top 20:
  • Thursday, May 26 - 8/7c (2hrs) - Atlanta & The Bay Area
  • Wednesday, June 1 - 8/7c (2hrs) - New York & Salt Lake City
  • Thursday, June 2 - 8/7c (1hr) - Los Angeles
  • Wednesday, June 8 - 8/7c - Las Vegas Callbacks
  • Thursday, June 9 - 8/7c - Top 20 Revealed/Perform

Format for this season
This season will feature a combination of the Top 20 format from seasons 2-6 and the All-Star format from season 7. It will start with a Top 20, and when it is down to a Top 10, All-stars will be brought in to benefit the contestants who will then be working with pros in their given styles. This new format will give the contestants and audience "the best of both worlds" according to Lythgoe.

This Year's Judges
Mary Murphy returns to the judging table with Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman... and a rotating judge. Cat Deeley returns as the host.

BTW, I know she took last season off from judging, but did she actually serve as instructor? I can't remember.

She was a guest judge during Vegas Week and made an appearance in the finale.

Just couldn't get into this the last 2 seasons. I'm going to try to watch but it's just such a large time commitment.

I enjoyed last season. Lauren was a great dancer.

I couldn't get into season 6, which aired in Fall 2009. It was just so soon after the summer season ended and all the networks were starting up their shows and I couldn't devote the 3 hours a week to watching it.

 to Toni Redpath being guest judge this season again. I like her, she a tough judge. Plus, she's tall and hot.

That's the one that did it to me for those exact 2 reasons. Last Summer might have just been carry over fatigue.

I think even Nigel Lythgoe said that Fall 2009 season was a bad idea. I believe he said he was burned out doing back to back seasons within a few months. Plus, they did the auditions for the Fall season while they were still doing the Live shows for that summer season.

I saw the last thirty minutes of tonight's episode - there were some good dancers and I'm sure we'll see that blond girl again (the one who almost made the Top 24 last year but was cut).

There were only five audition cities, and we've seen two.

I always enjoy the audition episodes that open the season for SYTYCD, and tonight was no exception.

It's a shame a lot of the stylized dancers are not into choreography, so they get left behind.

I didn't think the girl with the crappy dad had enough in the tank to compete with the other, better female dancers we saw tonight, but she made it through choreography.

Amber might be "too" much to handle, but let's see if she can harness her quirkiness and make it work for her.

The grandma segment was gold.

I don't remember Ryan (the girl who made it to the round of 24 last season) at all.

The girl with the Rich last name has some serious hops on her.

Bump

2 more hours tonight

New York and Salt Lake City.

Watched last week's 2 hour episode yesterday and it was a pretty fun start to the season. Mary looks as botoxed as ever.

:yack: at that nasty ass stripper in the San Francisco episode.

Utah always has outstanding dancers.

Yup. Oh, and that bouncy blonde from the LA auditions was from Utah.

I started watching the show tonight, but had to turn it off.

I simply cannot take one. more. fake-out cut.

"You did your best, but I'm sorry you didn't..........come up here and get your ticket to Las Vegas!"

Do the producers actually think *anyone* falls for that crap anymore (contestants or viewers)?

Enough.

The thing that bugged me tonight was the horrific plastic surgery on the guest judge from the Pussycat Dolls. I had to fast forward every time her face showed up on screen. :yack:

She put together the Pussycat Dolls, she wasn't in the group.

Nobody has blown me away yet. I want to see more contemporary dancing.

Everytime I see a snippet that includes Will and Katee (sp?), I want to see... Will and Katee. I really liked them both as dancers.

Jeanine's little sister was very, very good, goldfish mouth notwithstanding ;). And anything that brings Jeanine back is fine with me.

I have been blown away by the auditions this season. I have a feeling we havent even seen some of the best dancers. Seems the jumps, the extensions, the turns are even better and more unique then any other season.
These dancers are twisting and turning their bodies in some amazing ways.

Re: SYTYCD -- So You Think You Can Dance -- Season 8 -- The Auditions begin 05/26/11

I guess I need to get with the program. I felt Jeanine's sister was put through at least in part because of her lineage. She didn't wow me. It wouldn't surprise me if she doesn't make the top 20. Many of the other dancers we saw go through to Vegas are obvious fodder IMO. I do think the show has held back footage of some of the better dancers.

It's strange, though. I've felt the jumps and extensions of the featured dancers were anemic (I saw much better ones in the clips, not the auditions).

The good thing is, I have no doubt what I seek will eventually come once we get through the initial auditions. There are some beautiful dancers out there, and SYTYCD never fails at delivering them. I just wish I could see Will and Katee do a routine. We need time for SYTYCD alumni!

Tonight's ep is the Vegas callback and tomorrow they reveal the Top 20.

Hope the physical stature of some of the male dancers don't limit their ability to toss their female partners around when required. Otherwise, it looks like a solid, entertaining top 20 so far. Kaitlynne is yummy, not sure if she can dance, though. The girl from Georgia with the short hair is also an early fave. Wonder if Iveta can pull off the non-ballroom genres, she's got an amazing dance body.
