I watched tonight for the first time in ages, to see if they would really reveal Red John... and was shocked that they not only did, but seem to have closed out the story. Good casting too.
Anyone think they're going to backtrack from this? Or is it all (mercifully) really over.

WTF? Red John storyline is over? I haven't been watching this season (saw the first two though), but this gives me reason to fast track it immediately.

Got caught up with a backlog of eps on my DVR as I pretty much only tuned in to The Mentalist this season when The Mental-Liz was a repeat.
Red John convincingly radiated a more evil presence since shedding that 70s pornstache...I would be disappointed if they later made him out to be another copycat or Red John pawn... perfect casting. The actor has a knack for the smarmy.

I don't know the name of the actor, but I did recognize him.
Here's how it wrapped up:
I'm kind of mixed on the end. I would be disappointed if that wasn't RJ, but I would also be disappointed if that was the end of the RJ storyline entirely. While the actor and the final scene was satisfying, there were still a lot of unanswered questions. Fortunately I think we will get some more closure next season. Hopefully that's what we get and not another spin to stretch out the storyline. Also, the way Van Pelt's fiancée grabbed the necklace he gave her makes me think it's more than just a family heirloom.

Thanks for the summary - much appreciated! I usually hold off watching the season finale until the next season is starting, as I hate cliffhangers, but Blue Bloods and now Mentalist have now pleasantly surprised me. If that is how the RJ storyline ends, and it did end, I'll be a happy viewer next season.

I was wondering myself why he grab the necklace while he was dying. He uttered something to her too while dying but I couldn't make up what it was. Did anybody understand what he said?

Nice interview with Baker about last night's finale.
Also, Baker is under contract for 7 years. He's going to get a major raise and producer credit when the show reaches season 5.

So Jayne declares self-defense? Red John was pointing that big bad gun at him and he was only protecting himself. Nice end to Red John.

Self-defense might be a hard sell. Yes, RJ had a gun, but he was walking away when Jane told him to wait and then calmly walked over and shot him. I think one of the issues they will address next season will be if Jane can even prove the guy was RJ.

Even if a self-defense defense is a stretch, he's persuasive enough that he could probably beat it anyway. It's kind of like that one woman a few weeks ago who Jane spent the whole episode trying to catch. Even though he finally got her, she was confident she'd beat the murder rap, and Jane seemed to agree.

I thought this was a pretty great episode, but fairly predictable (I predicted pretty much everything that happened throughout the episode). I thought the casting of Bradley Whitford as Red John, however, was pretty perfect.
I doubt they'll retcon him into not being Red John--the end was satisfying, and they wouldn't get anything out of it except a cheap surprise and then a retread of Jane's vengeance. But I did think this was an interesting comment on the interview:

I suspect the 'real' Red John had more of his people (it seems he has an entire cult working for him) in the area and they will give eye-witness accounts that Jane shot in self defense and they saw the dead guy pointing a gun at Jane. Red John doesn't want Jane in prison where he can't toy with him. Red John lives.

Well my PVR cut off the last 15 minutes claiming the "disc is full". Shit.
So CBS no longer has full eps online? It's been a while as I don't go there unless I have a problem. Is this a delay or they just don't do full eps anymore?

Not anymore. In the 1st season, the 1st 5 or so episodes were posted, but Warner Bros cut CBS off and they don't allow them posted online anymore.
