Synopsis:

Spoiler:
The family gather at Jay's house before going to Alex's middle-school graduation, but they're in danger of missing the ceremony thanks to a perfect storm of events that includes Jay trying to hide a cosmetic snafu, Cameron thinking Mitchell is mocking him, and Phil reminding Claire that the kids are getting older.

Nope, this is not the season finale

Episode 23 of 24

Okay, and enough talk from that episod thread from 2 years ago that someone bumped.

Wow no comments yet?

Phil and Claire falling down the hill at the end was pretty good and there was a nice moment between Haley and Alex.

Kind of a flat episode for me. I enjoyed the Sister scenes but I was disappointed that "smart" Alex didn't come up with her own musical references to use for her off-the-cuff revised speech.

Cameron falling into the pool (twice) would have been funnier if Lily was smiling or laughing too.

It was an okay episode. It had its moments but was mostly forgetable. I did notice they didn't end with a "family lesson" speech at the end or a last minute gag. Instead it was Haley being mushed to death by her parents.

Not to be mean but I think she's incapable of any expression other than the blank stare.

Has Lily ever shown any awareness or emotion at all? Smile, giggle, crying? She needs to take lessons from the Olsens.

Not that I recall. They could easily replace her with a plastic doll and it'd have the same emotional range.

Or the toddler from Good Luck Charlie. There's an adorable kid with great personality (even if they make the mistake of having someone dub ocassional dialogue for her).

Anyone have a gif of Sofia running with the weird bike?

Phil and Claire on the bike was one of the funniest moments of the series

Didn't find this week's episode very funny. Cameron and Mitchell's bit got a few chuckles.

Or the kid (well, twins) from Raising Hope.

Haley: "If you do this you'll be a social piranha."

I'm surprised at the lukewarm reaction for this episode; I thought it was hilarious. I like it when the whole cast interacts. Phil and Claire smushing Haley at the end was great.

I can understand the lukewarm reaction.

I think most of us probably wanted Alex to give her actual speech. She called high school exactly how it was (and still is) and damn right it should be pointed out how vapid most teens are.

Lily and Hope are the exact polar opposites. My wife and I were just having this conversation ourselves. It's ridiculous.

Luke had all the best moments.

Manny: Can you believe in just a few years we'll be graduating?
Luke: Quiet, I'm trying to move this ball with my mind.
Manny:...well, I'll be graduating.

Luke: I have an idea.
Phil: Luke, we don't have time to build a rocket.
Luke: Nevermind.

Re: Modern Family -- "See You Next Fall" -- 5/18/11

It had a few good scenes; I liked the entire bike portion and Phil and Claire falling down the hill. Once again the Cameron and Mitchell scenes did nothing for me. I never really liked the Mitchell character but Cameron was such a riot he made up for it. The last couple episodes don't have him doing much that I've enjoyed so they could have left out the entire pool falling portion and the episode would have been no worse. I agree Lily is such a mannequin she does nothing to liven up their scenes either.

I liked Phil's ulterior motives for getting Claire upset but he doesn't strike me as a guy that'd go to vegas without the wife.

That kid has done a much better job this season than in the first.

Re: Modern Family -- "See You Next Fall" -- 5/18/11

Jeers to Modern Family for hitting a late-season sophomore slump.

Last week's dog of an episode was marred by Lin-Manuel Miranda's howlingly awful guest shot as a canine trainer. Somebody should tell this Tony-winner he needs to tone down his shtick for TV; he was equally irksome on House last season. And this week's installment wasn't much better, as it overrelied on slapstick gags—and not particularly well-executed ones at that—and found its characters acting, well, out of character.

Yes, we know Jay (Ed O'Neill) worries about the age difference with his muy caliente wife, Gloria (Sofia Vergara), but not even Dr. House could convince this old crank to get Botox. ("You're a veteran!" Eric Stonestreet's Cam pointed out, in one of the episode's few laugh-worthy lines.) And Alex (Ariel Winter) is way too smart and proud to discard her carefully thought-out valedictory speech in favor of a string of pop-music clichés, even if she was trying to spare the feelings of her shallow older sister, Haley (Sarah Hyland). As Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Mitchell put it, "No my God!" Let's hope Modern Family rallies for next week's season finale, because these last two episodes felt like they were written by Nolan Gould's dimbulb Luke Dunphy.

Didn't click the link. Was this written by an aging queen at Variety?

I was going to comment on this as well. It's the one thing that's always kind of bothered me about this show. Cause I don't think she ever has shown any emotion - at least not that I can recall.
