Hey, homeless crazy guys are some of the nicest, most genuine people on the planet. I won't have you bad-mouthing them!

Thats why playing for 2nd place isn't a bad idea at all. It's much easier to ride coattails and be unlikable than it is to make it to the end by being good physically, socially and strategically. And if you're lucky enough to get a vindictive jury, you might even win.
Everyone gets some cash for being on Survivor, don't they? Though the amount decreases the shorter one's stay is.

I always thought that if you made it to the final tribal you won money... otherwise nothing. So on seasons where they had 3 people in the final tribal I think it was $100k each to the runners up.

It has to be based on where you place and counting the number of votes you get should determine who came in 2nd and 3rd unless the winner wins all the votes. 2nd place should get more than 3rd place. Plus, all the contestants should be getting a nominal amount to appear on television.

I never knew they had that sort of breakdown for all of the contestants. I guess they need to be compensated something for their time.

However, it does give additional incentive for someone to merely go along with moves to eliminate others & stay 'safe' as long as possible even if the chances of winning are slim to none. In other words, the goal may not be so much as to realistically have a shot at winning (the 'coat-tail' type of players who never make any moves on their own) but instead to pocket extra $. And, of course, have the distinction of being in the "last ___ remaining"...even if it's because you're a weak, useless pawn taken along because you're no threat & unlikely to garner many (or any) votes at the Final.

Outlasting obviously has its own virtues compared to outwitting or outplaying, which tend to lead more to actually winning the game.

^That's a good point. For example, in this season, it might have been smart for someone from the Zap tribe to flip just to guarantee that they stay as long as possible. Each 3 days is big step up, money wise, after the merge.

Wow, that's interesting. Really makes you wonder why people volunteer to be voted off, or quit for (what seems like) small reasons. When you get to the top 11, you're basically getting $5k for three days work, and escalating from there. It sort of makes Phillip's strategy make a little more sense. Second or third still comes with a nice paycheck for a month's work.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about the people who ask to go home or out-and-out quit. It gives more credence when people talk about how hard the game is both physically & mentally since they're giving up what appears to be easy money (especially for those who are in service jobs, are students, etc.).

I wonder if they had this pay scale in place during the first few seasons when you could almost see the pounds dropping off contestants until some were just skin & bones. Those first season players deserved combat pay.
