Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Amber (Mae Whitman) quits her job and begins to fall down a dangerous and destructive path. Crosby (Dax Shepard) works with Joel (Sam Jaeger) to mend his relationship with Jasmine (Joy Bryant). Meanwhile, Kristina (Monica Potter) and Adam (Peter Krause) overhear a disturbing phone call, which strains their relationship with Haddie (Sarah Ramos). Elsewhere, Sarah (Lauren Graham) makes progress with her stage play with the help of Zeek's (Craig T. Nelson), old friend Gilliam T. Blount (guest-star Richard Dreyfuss).

Episode 21 of 22

Next week is the season finale. Really surprised they let the show end in April as opposed to May

So NBC must have scrapped the idea of moving this to Monday's? I thought I heard a few months back that it was going to switch.

Hopefully this gets renewed (on the bubble, last I checked).

Yes they scrapped it when Harry's Law was performing well on Monday's. It would have gotten slaughtered on Monday's at 10pm It has managed to stay above 2.0 in the demos for most of this season, until a recent slide after Body of Proof premiered. The good news is I heard the new President of NBC likes this show alot, so hopefully that runs in it's favor.

If i pushed my mom over like Amber did, i would be taken out behind the woodshed and shot in the back of the head like Old Yeller.

What is up with these angst-y white people. "I need to find myself, find who i am..."

You don't want to go to college, fine. Your ass is going to find itself, jockeying a register at Piggly Wiggly.

Honestly. This is the show I can't stop watching, yet I really am starting to hate with a passion. I'm really looking forward to the season finale, because I'm going to use that as an excuse to quit this show. I guess it's the actors I watch it for, but I just genuinely cannot stand the plotliines. I mean come on... She has sex, for the first or second time. And she just happens to dial her phone accidentally, which isn't possible, but she does. And out of probably thirty or forty numbers, it dials her parents? Who just happen to be together, in the car, so they can both hear her moans of passion? In lieu of it just being her mom, who probably wouldn't tell the father right away? Seriously? Come on. Never mind the relationship with the homeless guy is annoying and... Just annoying.

Then there's Amber. Seriously, come on. Ooh, I didn't get into college, so fuck everything, I'm going to become a drug addict again and smoke, and drink, and go wild, and almost get killed, and beat my mom, and I hate life! Because I didn't get into college! Does that ring even remotely true with the character if Amber they've developed over two seasons? Absolutely not. But oh no, we need to send a message that drugs are bad, and they'll ruin your life, and they aren't the answer to your problems. Meanwhile they make light of drug use with Adam's boss and the lollipops. This whole Amber plot line is stupid, contrived, out of character, ridiculous, and stupid.

The stuff with Adam's boss was old the last time he popped up ten episodes ago. The crap with the play is ridiculous. Ooh, I've never written a play before, but I did, and it's genius, and my dad just happens to know this famous play guy. But he's been out of the business for decades. But he happens to know this other guy. And he just happened to call him an incompetent, but of course that's the first guy he went to with the play. But that's okay, because with her wit and wiles, she can win him over. Because she's too important to have her play read by a reader first, and then sent on only if it's good enough. Oh no, she has to skip that because she's better than everyone else, and she's never written a play before, so of course she has to skip the reader, because she's just that damn good.

And finally, the stuff with Dax Sheperd and Jasmine? Jesus, how long are they going to run this out? First and foremost, the episode where he had enough because Jasmine was acting like a bitch and letting him make zero decisions? Yeah, what changed? He's trying to win back a woman who treated him like crap, never apologized, never changed, because that relationship is going to be so much better if she does "take him back." So yeah, sell everything that makes you you, put it all on the line, for a woman who not only wouldn't take you back in the real world, but who treated you like crap. And now that it's over, why the hell does Jasmine keep showing up around the Braverman family?

I guess this show has really gone downhill, or my tastes have really changed, because as one can probably tell, the writing in the show now, along with just the base plot lines, drive me crazy. It's cheap and lazy writing trying to instill morals down my throat, and the characters have all turned into a bunch of whiny, egotistical, better than everyone else, whiny jackasses. Argh. Just 44 more minutes to go.

Not true, they do. Last summer I was leaving a movie and there was the back to the future delorean parked outside the theater for a midnight showing. I pulled my phone out to take a picture and for some reason my brother was on the phone who I hadn't talked to in weeks.

It's not exactly likely to happen like it did in the show, but it is possible. Also I feel like they played it pretty comedically as if it was this outrageously odd situation.

What exactly was the point in NBC showing the final moment of this episode in the commercials to promote it? It completely removes all the drama leading up to it. You know it's going to happen. It was impossible to avoid the promos and I never watch promos. NBC has No Bloody Clue what they're doing.

Edit: I'm pretty sure the parents called her from the car to check up on her and they rolled over top of the phone and it picked up. The display on the phone said the call was from Mom.

I know we don't talk about the promos for next week's episode in the current week's episode thread but I want to make a prediction before the season finale airs so I'll put it in a spoiler tag and make it very vague:

Spoiler:
My guess is what Adam thinks he finds doesn't belong to who he thinks it does. My guess is it belongs to his wife, otherwise this show is way too predictable.

It would make sense that it's Christina who is pregnant. The show is loosely based on the movie and that was a key part of the movie storyline - the oldest son's wife (in the movie his name was Gil) getting pregnant late in life.

I go to all that trouble to use a spoiler and vague terms and you go and let the cat out of the bag in the very next reply? If this were a LOST thread, you'd have been kicked off the island by now.

This EXACTLY- you took the words right out of my mouth- I routinely pause this show when watching and comment to my wife how ridiculous the plot lines/writing are.

But for some reason I can't really explain, despite all of this I still like the show- with some better writing this could be a truly great show....

Yes, that's exactly the problem. It could be an amazing show. They don't use their greatest asset, Craig T Nelson, nearly enough, and never have since day one. The writers just don't seem to get it, and I don't understand how such clearly awful, and they are awful, writers managed to get hired on a show with such an amazing, all-star cast. That's probably the most infuriating part, how good the show could be. And considering I'm still watching this contrived, whiny, egotistical crap, it definitely must be truly stellar the potential the show has to make me sit through this.

I didn't even get to Max, which I commented on in another episode thread, and didn't last night since it wasn't part of the episode. But add Max to the ridiculous, stupid, whiny, egotistical plot lines of this show. Basically, Max is the only one that behaves to the entire world the way the rest of the Braverman family feels about themselves. The crap about not letting her play get read by a reader drives me insane. It would have been read, and if it's really so damn good, would have been passed on. But oh no, she's just too good for that, as is the entire family. Fire all the writers yesterday, and this show could have no ceiling for how good it could be. Right now, it doesn't seem to have a floor for how bad it can get.

I think you've summed up why I stopped watching this show last fall. It's not a bad show, but the contrived circumstances they come up with to create tension between the characters is ridiculous. And then all the characters do is shout at each other and mope about how their feelings are hurt.

^I would just like to point out that I put my prediction in a spoiler and worded it in vague terms in case someone did see it that didn't mean to. Also, it was just a prediction, I could be totally wrong. I apologize if I've upset some of you. Clearly, I just wanted to make a prediction and see if I'm right. I'm sorry the next person responded without the spoiler and potentially ruined next week's episode. I should have just waited for next week's thread and posted hours before the episode airs. Again, my apologies.

Putting it in spoilers (and clearly indicating outside the spoiler that it's speculation about the season finale) is a perfectly fine way to handle it.

I agree. Nothing wrong with speculation. :)

If I was writing this show (and I'm a sick puppy) I would have Crosby go nuts and put an axe through Jasmine's face after rejecting him then wall her up in his new house. He could raise his son there and tell him his mom (although missing) will always be close to them not knowing how true that statement really is. :D

Haha, I love it, it fits in well with my plot line in a previous episode thread of having Max go crazy and kill his sister and parents. We need to form a writing team and get hired onto this show. Stupid, contrived plot lines? Hell no, we'll have the entire family killing each other off. Each episode can be a "who snapped and killed a family member this episode" theme. They certainly have enough family members that we could make it last a season.
