Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

Yeah pretty much. When I watched I just thought it was funny and gave me a few chuckles..Then I thought about it more when writing the post. Also noticed the raper alien later mutates into a Talaxian and becomes Neelix's main squeeze!

Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

Averaging about an ep. per day for now..

Enterprise 1x5 - Terra Nova
Enterprise goes looking for a lost human colony but finds a fresh human dilemma when the mutated colonists refuse to believe their ancestors came from Earth.
-
This one was okay, another that didn't exactly feel original. Watched a few more since this one and don't remember many details. It was cool that they went and tried to track down an old colony, definitely liked the basis of the story.

--

1x6 - The Andorian Incident
When the crew stops to visit a Vulcan sanctuary, they find Andorian guards accusing the Vulcans of hiding surveillance equipment.
-
This was pretty good, was cool to see the Andorians for the first time, I remember they show up several more times. Also always good to see Jeffrey Combs. This was entertaining but the 'twist' ending was obvious from the start. When watching I was wondering how the Andorians spoke English considering they'd never heard of earth or humans. I thought they only had their universal translator on Enterprise when going through the comm. In a later episode I saw they carry little ones around with them so I guess that answers that. Now I can stop being annoyed by the language inconsistencies.. I figure from here on out there will only be occasional instances when it won't work and Hoshi will have to work her linguistic magic.

--

1x7 - Breaking the Ice
While Reed and Mayweather try to drill their way to the heart of a comet, Archer tries to melt the facade of a visiting Vulcan captain and Tucker gets a peek behind T'Pol's icy exterior.
-
The comet stuff wasn't that great, and I don't see how it had normal earth gravity. I did like it overall seeing character dev from T'Pol and more on human-Vulcan relations. Oh---- Phil from Night Court playing a Vulcan?! Saaweet!

--

1x8 - Civilization
Archer finds aliens meddling with a pre-warp culture and develops a relationship with a suspicious native while T'Pol fights the menace in space.
-
This is probably my favorite episode so far. I've always liked Star Trek episodes where they go undercover in another culture or time. This is the first time humans come across a "non-warp" culture I believe, which was cool to see. It was also interesting when they find out that they aren't the only warp folks checking these guys out. Archer gets to make out with an alien apothecary and saves the pre-industrial culture from the evil aliens. This is another episode that was not at all original, but I was entertained.

--

1x9 - Fortunate Son
Starfleet orders Enterprise to assist the Fortunate, a ship of Boomers -- humans raised in space -- but the crew find themselves embroiled in a struggle with the Nausicaans.
-
Another decent episode. Not all that exciting but cool to actually see Boomers. Mayweather gets a feature episode. Comes across as a weenie and sounds like a whiny little brat when he interrupts Archer talking to the Nausicaans near the end. Reminded me a bit of Luke Skywalker whining. I don't remember the Nausicaans being this "diplomatic." I remember the TNG episode where I think they were shown for the first time they came across as nothing but bloodthirsty and wouldn't make a deal.

--

Archer in the show so far is definitely not cautious enough and T'Pol urging caution is making a lot of sense. Might make for a boring show though if they stay out of everyone's business. Sometimes though it would just be a matter of further study before rushing in. Also, Reed may as well not be on the show so far. Trip is the best character so far. To this point the show is entertaining enough but still average. It is doing what I wanted it to do so far in terms of direction showing them encounter things for the first time. I think the first nine eps are at least as good as any of the other Trek series. They've mostly had crappy starts IMO so not necessarily saying much.

I've got a few episodes to go in S1 of TNG.

You can never go wrong with Jeffrey Combs! I liked "Fortunate Son" because it is one of the handful of Mayweather episodes in the entire series. He's a good actor and could have been an interesting character but the writers just didn't do anything with him.

Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

Mayweather comes off as whiny and naive to me which I wouldn't expect from someone who grew up on spaceships..I dunno. Interesting watching these shows in HD you notice things..like there's a scene with Combs in the Andorian Incident where you can see his skin through the makeup in a couple areas.. Probably wouldn't have noticed if there was crappy resolution.

Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

I always chalked up Mayweather's naivete to the difference between working on a cargo ship and working on a military vessel (which for all of the Federation's peace-loving ways is essentially what the Enterprise is). Plus, on his parent's cargo ship he knew and grew up with the entire crew, he's been on the Enterprise for all of five minutes - it takes some time to get acclimated to the people around you.

The whiny part I can't help you with...I found most of the characters to be a bit whiny during the first season. Some grew out of it, some didn't. I plan on buying the S2 blu at the end of the month, I can't wait to watch the show in HD.

Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

Been awhile and have watched quite a few more Enterprise episodes. Probably won't say too much, watched enough of these that the details aren't fresh in my mind-

Episode 10 - Cold Front
When a crew member reveals himself to be a time traveler from hundreds of years in the future and asks for help apprehending a Suliban who has just saved Enterprise, Archer must decide whom to trust.
-
Really good episode, and an important one as it's part of the temporal cold war arc and the intro of Daniels. He is kind of a cheesy guy for an important character, but I suppose there's no reason a 'cop' in the far future wouldn't be a a goof. I guess that is what I still remember most from the episode..ha. Archer does seem to buy into what Daniels is selling a bit too easily even though Silik saves the ship. Makes some sense though since Archer already knwos Silik has tried to kill him and saving the ship is for his/his boss's purposes. They also didn't seem wowed enough by the 'walk through walls' tech. Anyway, was about time they got back to this arc and did pretty well.
------

Episode 11 - Silent Enemy
When an unknown ship launches stealth attacks on Enterprise, Reed and Tucker work to get the ship's phase cannons working.
-
I thought this was a great one as well. Creepy and wondering why this ship keeps dropping in and attacking them then running off. These might be the most 'alien' aliens we've seen in Trek off the top of my head. Not just another human with head bumps. Of course, they are similar to the 'greys' we hear about and aren't overly unfamiliar to viewers but I thought they were creepy and alien. Well done.
------

Episode 12 - Dear Doctor
In an era before the Prime Directive, Archer must decide whether to ask Phlox to save a civilization doomed by evolution to fail.
-
I really loved this one until the end, which ruined it. The type of episode that's been done in Trek before but it was well done and gave them an interesting dilemma. Problem is the choice Archer made didn't fit with anything he'd done before or things I've seen him do after. They acted like allowing a species and civilization to die out was the right thing. Even though that's where untouched evolution would have led it, they obviously tamper with such things all the time.

The only thing keeping them from doing it was the other neanderthal-like species was supposedly going to have an intelligence 'awakening' and surpass the current top dog species in thousands of years and if they saved the current technological civ, it would keep the other one from thriving later one, or at least that was speculated by Phlox. Lame. Who knows if any of it would have turned out like Phlox thought down the line, and even if it did, perhaps the 'neanderthals' would have flourished regardless. So they go and meet them face to face and tell them "we're going to let you die out, sorry dudes." Just terrible. I think the writer came up with the idea and wanted it to end that way regardless of whether it was right or made sense.
------

Have several more and will do more later when I have more time!

Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

"Dear Doctor" was an interesting episode. I think it would have been way better if the network had allowed the writers to keep the original ending: Phlox and Archer didn't agree to commit genocide and we probably would have been spared the "we need a prime directive" speech.

Shady12 08-20-13 08:44 AM

Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

Interesting..so the original plan was to not commit genocide..good to know. I'll just consider that to be how it really ended and will allow me to have more respect for the show!

lisadoris 08-20-13 11:49 AM

Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

I think the genocide was supposed to still occur but Archer wasn't going to be in on it. The network wasn't interested in having the characters involved in actual conflict.

So much for respecting the show ;)

Re: Starting a Star Trek journey

Well, it would still be better if Archer had been against it. He agreed with Phlox ridiculously quick on the show. Should have at least had a montage of him going to his quarters in deep thought about it while feeding Porthos cheese, watching a water polo match, and tossing a ball against the wall..hahaha.
