Jeopardy: Jennings vs. Rutter vs. Watson, the super-computer -- February 14-16
Check your local listings for times and set your DVRs. If you're on the west coast or Jeopardy airs at 7:30 rather than 7:00 in your market, you'll want to be careful checking this thread.
IBM’s celebrated supercomputer Watson will square off against Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter in a first-of-its-kind competition to be aired over three nights in February. The grand prize is $1 million; second place wins $300,000; third place receives $200,000. Jennings and Rutter have pledged 50 percent of their winnings to charity; IBM will donate all of its prize. |

I imagine the scheduling went something like:
"Who doesn't go out on Valentine's Day?" "Nerds" "IDEA!" But this should be interesting. |

Saw a segment on the computer Watson on PBS recently. It was pretty impressive, but John Conn--er, Ken Jennings is the man!

I also wish they let Rutter come back and try to run Jeopardy under the unlimited champion format to see if he can challenge Ken's win record. |

730 ET here. I figured all markets aired in their hour before primetime (Some do Wheel before or after). Guess not.

Yeah, ours is before the local and national news. I don't like it. It used to be back to back with the Wheel from 6-7.

There was NOVA special on this machine and the Jeopardy matchup, aired last week. You can watch it here:

Somebody is promoting this in a novel way. I watched the Nova episode last week. I heard the story on NPR. It worked. I want to see the competition.

Brad Rutter's Jeopardy record is 20-0, including 3 tournaments and two games of spanking Jennings' ass. I'd like to see him come on the show as a regular contestant again and reign for years.

Yup, every time Rutter has gone against Jennings he has ruined him, shame he doesn't get the pub that Jennings does. If he had played Jeopardy during the "no winner limit" era he would still be champion.
Rutter would have a shot at breaking the streak, but they'd both agree that you have to get lucky as well to last for that long. |
