Portlandia (IFC) -- Series Thread -- S: Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein

Anyone catch the premiere of "Portlandia" last night? This is EXACTLY what I picture Portland to be like...

<iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AVmq9dq6Nsg" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe>

I've got to give it up to Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein for having fun with hippie dippy hipster culture. Especially since a good chunk of their fans probably fall into that camp.

The biggest laugh of this episode for me was probably Jason Sudeikis's hair.

It was much funnier than I was expecting it to be and reminded me a lot of the classic PacNW sketch comedy show, "Almost Live!" The old lady at the library really had me rolling.

I liked it. I laughed more at this one episode than anything SNL has done in years. I loved the hide and seek league and Jason Sudeikis was hilarious.

Watched this last night, it was pretty funny and were right on the money when it came to Portland. It definitely reminded me of a lot of the really strange people and things I've ran into since moving here.....especially the scene when they were ordering the chicken at the restaurant & the Steve Buscemi skit in the bookstore with the weird tea and feminists. Pretty funny stuff.

That was my favorite skit. I love Armisen so it was a no-brainer that I had to check this out.

I'll come back for more.

^ Same here. This is a perfect vehicle for Armisen (also a fan).

This was very good, much better than Armisen's work with SNL.

In case anybody was wondering, here's the song that played over the intro credits:

"Were the hazelnuts local?"

I also like the exchange at the feminist bookstore:
"You wouldn't go to a puzzle store and buy the last piece."
"Where's a puzzle store?"
"There's one on Hawthorne, one on South Broadway..."

As someone who lives in Portland, I found the show enjoyable. The stereotypes are a little exaggerated, but not too far off the mark. In fact I saw our old roommate last night and her head is now mostly shaved and dyed red. She left the hair in front of the ears and that's pink. And her new Mohawk is blue. She would fit in VERY well on the show!

I on the other hand could easily blend in pretty much in any part of the country. We're not all like that!

The second episode wasn't quite as funny as the first, but still provided several laughs. I got the biggest laughs out of the bicyclist bit and when the dog was leashed to the post. Guest stars Kyle MacLachhlan and Aubrey Plaza's scenes weren't all that funny, imo.

It is exaggerated, but the principals are correct. Makes me happy to live just far enough away to be a voyeur.

yep both of those were my favorite skits as well. I love after going through the whole scene about the dog being tied up they go down a block and have their baby tied to a poll.

From that song, it sounds more like Eugene than Portland.

I watched the first two episodes and there were some funny moments but all in all it just doesn't hook me. The competitive hide and seek team was pretty funny.

This show continues to bring the funny. Pretty good bit with Aimee Mann guest starring in last Friday's episode. Armisen in stripper garb was a little disturbing

The Coffee Land bit was one of my favorites so far. For anyone that missed it or just wants to see it again...

I really cracked up at the "It's Over" skit from the last episode, because of how true it was. Rest of the episode wasn't really all that great, aside from the coffee land posted above.

This was just renewed for a second, 10 episode season.

http://www.deadline.com/2011/02/ifc-...second-season/

Any show that has trippy Japanese shorts and a storyline that has Aimee Mann as an incompotent maid and includes Sarah MClaughlin pinatas is alright with me. (After all those damn pet ads, I would love to destroy one of said pinatas).

From the credits? That's Feel It All Around by Washed Out which is based on a slowed sample of I Want You by Gary Low:

Cacao! The 80's were better.

I don't get the anti-SNL bias when Lorne Michaels is the executive producer on this show.

re: Portlandia (IFC) -- Series Thread -- S: Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein

Because I live in Portland, this really hits home for me. But I keep wondering, does anyone outside the Pacific Northwest like or understand the humor? To me, it seems pretty specific. For example, the portrayal of the mayor in the last episode (bringing MLB to Portland) seems a spot-on satire of the behavior of Portland's mayor Sam Adams. And the bringing major league baseball to Portland especially ironic because Portland just lost its Triple-A baseball team partly because (in my opinion) of the incompetence of the mayor and city council.
