Michael Scott Meets David Brent on The Office

http://www.tvline.com/2011/01/scoop-...b/#more-185417

You know that faceoff between Office managers David Brent and Michael Scott thatís supposedly been in the works for, um, ever? Looks like itís actually, finally gonna happen!

Sources confirm that Ricky Gervais is poised to reprise his role from the original overseas version of the comedy in an upcoming episode of the U.S. redo. As youíd expect, details are sketchy. But what Iím being told is that Gervais ó who not only created the British Office but retains an exec producer title on the American remake ó will cross paths (and perhaps swords?) with his Yank counterpart, Steve Carellís Michael.

Youíll recall that last year Gervais hinted that he might be Dunder-Mifflin-bound this season, then producers denied anything was in the works. (Though the actor-comedian previously wrote an episode of the U.S. Office, this would be his first time appearing on screen.)

The news of Gervaisí guest gig comes just three days after his no-holds-barred stint as host of the Golden Globes drew fire from Hollywoodís thinnest-skinned elite. Thankfully, a backlash to the backlash seems to be kicking in.

That would be pretty good. I'm sure he'll be one of the candidates for Micheal's job coming in for an interview.

Re: Michael Scott Meets David Brent on The Office

I guess I'll believe it when we see them filming it. This has been talked about I think since the show began. I've been dying to see this happen though, so I'll be hoping for this to really come to fruition. Would have been awesome to bring over Tim, Gareth, and Dawn over as well. I would imagine the world would explode if Tim was sitting next to Jim, Gareth next to Dwight, and Dawn answering the phones with Pam. Or I guess Erin now. So maybe Dawn would be a salesman? That'd be weird.

I've pretty much lost interest in the show and stopped watching at the beginning of this season, but I'd tune in for this.

I was really holding out hope the show would end with Michael leaving and Brent walking and saying he was the new boss. But this will do.

Great 'in' joke that would work for the nerds, but not at all for the masses.

Re: Michael Scott Meets David Brent on The Office

Some slight spoilers about this news...

Spoiler:
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/01/ricky_gervais_will_cameo_on_am.html

It's going to happen: David Brent will meet up with Michael Scott before Steve Carell leaves The Office. Vulture has learned that Ricky Gervais shot a top-secret cameo that will appear in the cold open of the January 27 episode of the NBC series. "It's a little more than if you blink, you'll miss it, but if you don't set your TiVo right, you'll miss it," says Office show-runner Paul Lieberstein.

In a testament to just how secret this whole idea was, Lieberstein says Gervais and Carell shot their scene all the way back in September, when Gervais was in town for the Emmys. "Ricky had wanted to do something [with the U.S. Office] and it felt like we shouldn't go the whole series without them connecting," Lieberstein says. "But we had some issues to work out, like how does David Brent live in the world of Michael Scott." Producers knew it might be odd to link the universes of two office managers who both had documentary crews following them. In the end, the decision was made to shoot the scene away from Dunder-Mifflin. "It's outside of the office, and it's just the two of them interacting," he says. "It's just a llittle nod to Steve and his final year." To help maintain the cone of silence, Lieberstein adds, "We didn't even tell NBC at first. So [Ricky] worked for free. But don't print that — it might get him in trouble with the INS." In a perfect world, Lieberstein had hoped the cameo could air unannounced, much the way George Clooney popped up in one of the final episodes of ER. Alas, the age of the Internet might have made that impossible, and Lieberstein gave Vulture the thumbs-up to reveal the cameo Wednesday afternoon. This ought to make everyone forget about that whole Golden Globes thing.

I have to say this would be cool and I'd tune in to see it, but why do they act like it needs to be such a big secret? I mean it doesn't really seem like that big a deal except to hardcore Gervais fans maybe.

Sorry. Michael Corvin should have known better. The politically correct term is "socially challenged".

As someone who treasures the original The Office, and can't really stomach the U.S. version (far too cartoony), I don't like this idea at all. Cheapens the original for me. But still, I will watch this if it happens.

How so? You can still choose not to watch it and even watch the original like it never happened.

Ricky Gervais is an executive producer of the US version -- the original version was not cheapened by that as well?

Re: Michael Scott Meets David Brent on The Office

I think that overlapping the universes of the two shows would be too much of a silly stunt, and a brief walkthrough cameo of Gervais works much better. But advanced word getting out kind of ruins the spontaneous fun of it, too. I don't think this will end up being as much of a "hey, cool/wow!" moment because of that, unless someone who is a fan of both shows somehow doesn't hear about it in advance and are therefore genuinely surprised.

Yes. Yes it was.

But you can't blame Gervais for franchising it out. Made him filthy rich, I'm sure. There are many foreign versions of The Office...not just the U.S. one.
