Michael Scott Meets David Brent on The Office

You know that faceoff between Office managers David Brent and Michael Scott that’s supposedly been in the works for, um, ever? Looks like it’s actually, finally gonna happen!
Sources confirm that Ricky Gervais is poised to reprise his role from the original overseas version of the comedy in an upcoming episode of the U.S. redo. As you’d expect, details are sketchy. But what I’m being told is that Gervais — who not only created the British Office but retains an exec producer title on the American remake — will cross paths (and perhaps swords?) with his Yank counterpart, Steve Carell’s Michael.
You’ll recall that last year Gervais hinted that he might be Dunder-Mifflin-bound this season, then producers denied anything was in the works. (Though the actor-comedian previously wrote an episode of the U.S. Office, this would be his first time appearing on screen.)
The news of Gervais’ guest gig comes just three days after his no-holds-barred stint as host of the Golden Globes drew fire from Hollywood’s thinnest-skinned elite. Thankfully, a backlash to the backlash seems to be kicking in.

That would be pretty good. I'm sure he'll be one of the candidates for Micheal's job coming in for an interview.

I guess I'll believe it when we see them filming it. This has been talked about I think since the show began. I've been dying to see this happen though, so I'll be hoping for this to really come to fruition. Would have been awesome to bring over Tim, Gareth, and Dawn over as well. I would imagine the world would explode if Tim was sitting next to Jim, Gareth next to Dwight, and Dawn answering the phones with Pam. Or I guess Erin now. So maybe Dawn would be a salesman? That'd be weird.

I've pretty much lost interest in the show and stopped watching at the beginning of this season, but I'd tune in for this.

I was really holding out hope the show would end with Michael leaving and Brent walking and saying he was the new boss. But this will do.

I have to say this would be cool and I'd tune in to see it, but why do they act like it needs to be such a big secret? I mean it doesn't really seem like that big a deal except to hardcore Gervais fans maybe.

As someone who treasures the original The Office, and can't really stomach the U.S. version (far too cartoony), I don't like this idea at all. Cheapens the original for me. But still, I will watch this if it happens.

I think that overlapping the universes of the two shows would be too much of a silly stunt, and a brief walkthrough cameo of Gervais works much better. But advanced word getting out kind of ruins the spontaneous fun of it, too. I don't think this will end up being as much of a "hey, cool/wow!" moment because of that, unless someone who is a fan of both shows somehow doesn't hear about it in advance and are therefore genuinely surprised.

But you can't blame Gervais for franchising it out. Made him filthy rich, I'm sure. There are many foreign versions of The Office...not just the U.S. one.
