House -- "Larger than Life" -- 1/17/11

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
When a man (guest star Matthew Lillard) puts his life on the line to save a stranger who fell onto the subway tracks, he emerges from the dramatic scene miraculously unscathed but then suddenly collapses. Both the hospital and the town become captivated by the man's selfless deed, but as the team works to diagnose his symptoms, they discover that the hero's seemingly life-changing deed failed to break old habits. Meanwhile, House tries to avoid Cuddy's birthday dinner with her opinionated mother Arlene (guest star Candice Bergen), and Taub draws unexpected attention when his face graces billboards advertising the hospital. As Taub and his wife reignite a physical relationship, Masters' (Amber Tamblyn) outside perspective helps him realize that it's time to take action on his crumbling marriage.

Episode 9 of 22 (although I read FOX may have ordered a 23rd episode recently)

Spoiler regarding Thirteen and Martha Masters futures on the show from TVLine.com:

Spoiler:
The doctor is out… or at least she will be by the end of the season. House creator David Shore confirms to TVLine exclusively that Amber Tamblyn’s stint on the show will conclude this spring.
Although her deal with the show was only for one year — she was brought in to fill the temporary void left by Olivia Wilde’s Thirteen — the boss was hoping the Joan of Arcadia actress would extend her stay. “I wish she was sticking around, because she’s wonderful,” he says. “But she’s not going to be with us for [much longer].”

Tamblyn’s whip-smart MD-in-training Martha Masters will depart right around the time Wilde’s ailing Thirteen is slated to check back in. (I hear the two will briefly cross paths.) Shore says he’s “literally working” on the script for her final episode right now. “We’re going to give her a good sendoff. I’m not at liberty to discuss any details,” he insists, “but she’s getting a good sendoff.”

Tamblyn’s character got the typically chilly welcome from House and others when she arrived earlier this season, laboring to supplant her lack of a “Dr.” title with encyclopediac knowledge. “Shes an interesting character, that Masters,” notes Omar Epps (Foreman). “Our team is a little bit jaded, so we had to have a lot of patience with her.”

Sprague Grayden - she was on Jericho a few seasons ago, and then also played the daughter of the president on 24.

Yeah it got an extra episode. Kind of odd, but I like it!

House sedating Cuddy's Mom and Wilson during dinner had to be one of the funniest scenes on the show in a long time.

I also got a some laughs at Masters and House bickering on who is right. Amber Tamblyn's character is so mousy and annoying, but I kind of like that she's nothing at all like Thirteen.

to Taub for breaking up with his smoking hot wife.

I did like seeing him vandalize his Poster at the end.

The case was predictable as usual, but the character interactions were awesome.

Matthew Lillard was surprisingly not obnoxious.

The whole deal with the Toub billboards and House "Hitler-ing" the one in the bus stop was awesome. This was one of the better episodes from the comedy side of things.

I think I'd watch a "House: The Medical School Years" show.

"Inapporpriate? I mean, because of the whole Jew thing?" I smile at this show more than sitcoms.

I can't give a thumbs down to Taub for suggesting divorce. There are no kids, and they really don't have a happy life together. Like Taub, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the increased activity knowing I'm not the subject/cause of it. There are many "hot" women in the world. There's a lot more to maintaining a relationship than having a hot woman next to you. I think most men know that, yet we (men) keep saying it in public as if there's some type of secret handshake agreement that it's all we care about in a woman. It might be a decent way to pick one night stands, but not a life partner. Kudos to Taub for looking reality in the face. Of course I'd give him even more kudos if he manned up (and grew up) and actually fixed his relationship. But given he's not able/willing to do that, call it a day and try to find some happiness for both of them.

I do think that's the whole point of Taub defacing the billboard at the end. He couldn't "be better" like the billboard said.

As for fixing a relationship...it rarely happens. Once that breach has happened, there's usually no coming back. He strayed physically, which lead to her straying emotionally. It wouldn't have mattered what he did at that point, she was the one who had moved on emotionally. While some people might stay together, it doesn't mean they actually solved the problem. They just learned to live with it.

I thought it was pretty realistic.

If they dumped the medical BS from this show, I'd still watch.
