Damn, what a depressing episode!

Although, when Marshall said his last words...that atleast delivered a good laugh. I actually found myself saying those same words right before he had said them!

Re: How I Met Your Mother -- "Last Words" -- 01/17/11

I thought this was a nice follow-up to the Bad News episode. Everyone did a good job conveying grief and there were still plenty of laughs. It's amazing how much better this season is than the last one.

I liked the idea of last words and thought Marshall was particularly effective when breaking down over the voicemail. It was great that he got to hear his dad say "I love you" one last time and I liked that he went right into something lame afterward, seemed more realistic that way.

Robin definitely owned the episode though with her bag producing anything anyone needed.

I'm impressed that a 'sad' episode still managed to be entertaining

Not gonna lie: teared up during the voicemail. A really nicely balanced episode.

Loved Robin's response to her dad's phone call

Me too.

Great episode.

Are this and the previous one already a classic? I think so.

Re: How I Met Your Mother -- "Last Words" -- 01/17/11

I just watched the last 2 episodes back to back (I didn't catch the countdown the first time I watched the previous episode).

This episode was the perfect follow-up to the previous one. That one ended with a shot in the gut that this show had never really delivered before. This episode was touching, funny, and really what you'd expect out of this show.

They did make one little error. At the end of the last episode, Marshall was using his phone to call his father. Then they bring up the whole idea that he had the voice mail from his father because his phone had been dead. I guess Marshall could have two phones, but for a show that actually does a great job with their continuity, it seems like an odd mistake.

Plus apparently his phone was dead for the few days that must have passed since his dad died - and he didn't think of recharging it until he was back in St. Cloud?

I don't think it's a huge stretch that he missed a call, didn't notice the message, his phone was nearly out of power when he was trying to call, and it happened that way. I have had similar things in terms of missing a message happen.

I already deleted last week's episode, but didn't he borrow Barney's phone at the end?

Really great episode. Damn, HIMYM choked me up two weeks in a row now.

But yeah, everyone was awesome in this, especially Marshall and Robin.

This was the episode that caused NPH to call Eric Braeden a douche for not coming back to play Robin's father for the phone call. Ray Wise did the part instead (personally, I much prefer Ray Wise).

Yeah, Ray Wise is the man. Always enjoy him popping up on Psych.

Loved Robin, Marshall and Lily this ep.

I deleted it as well, but that is how I remember it.

Damn fine episode. Jason Segel did an amazing job. I nearly teared up when he heard the message.

I also loved Robin "Red" Scherbatsky. However, I was disappointed that Ted and Barney couldn't make Marshall laugh.

I have to agree that this was a great follow up to the last episode. It didn't have tons of laughs but the tone and ending of the episode was great.

My faith in this show is restored. Not that I really lost any, but I love that they don't seem to miss a beat.

I just watched the end again after reading this, and Marshall borrowed Ted's phone at the end of the episode.

Re: How I Met Your Mother -- "Last Words" -- 01/17/11

The scheduling for this show is getting annoying. New episode 1/3 (IIRC), repeat 1/10, new 1/17, repeat this week. I'm assuming they're new for a few weeks in a row after this?

Re: How I Met Your Mother -- "Last Words" -- 01/17/11

I recall seeing a preview photo with the gang standing outside the church with the bully on the ground holding his junk as if he just got kicked below the belt. With the long build-up of the bully and the ball-busting jokes, and trying to get Marshall to laugh, I'm not sure why they decided to cut that bit out.
