What 3 seasons of the Simpsons should I buy?

With Black Friday sales of the Simpsons seasons on DVD...I need advice:

I watched the show all the time awhile back (monorail episode, Valentine's Day with Lisa and Milhouse, etc) so I was wondering what you all thought would be 3 of the best seasons to pick up in these sales (seasons 2-12).

Fire away.

Tough call, but I'll say seasons three, four, and five.

Season three includes:
Like Father, Like Clown (introducing Krusty's estranged rabbi father)
Flaming Moe's
I Married Marge (one of the best flashback episodes)
Bart the Lover (Bart tricks Mrs. Krabappel into thinking she has a lover, but then repents)
Homer At The Bat

Season four includes:
Kamp Krusty
Lisa's First Word (probably the best flashback episode)
Marge vs. the Monorail
The Front (Bart and Lisa write for Itchy and Scratchy)
Krusty Gets Kancelled

Season five includes:
Homer's Barbershop Quartet (still a fantastic Beatles parody)
Cape Feare (Simpsons move to a houseboat to escape Sideshow Bob)
Marge On The Lam (Thelma and Louise parody)
Deep Space Homer
Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadassss Song (Bart gets Skinner fired and they become friends)
The Boy Who Knew Too Much (Bart as a witness in the Freddy Quimby trial)

Anyways, just a few of the highlights of that season. There are some all-timer episodes in seasons 2 and 6-8 as well. But IMO it starts to decline in quality and consistency after that. Only a handful of all-timers show up beyond that.

You can randomly pick any 3 from Seasons 3-8 and be happy with your purchase. It's really hard to specifically pick between those seasons - they're all fantastic.

Anything between 3-9 are considered the "prime" Simpson's seasons. You can't go wrong though!

Seasons 3-8 are the best Simpsons episodes.

Seasons 3 through 5 are great, so you can't go wrong there... but looking back over episode lists, I'm surprised by the number of fantastic episodes in Season 7. "Lisa the Vegetarian," "King-Size Homer," "Radioactive Man," "Bart Sells His Soul," "22 Short Films About Springfield," "Summer of 4 Ft. 2"... that's some good stuff. Maybe not as consistent as earlier seasons, but it has some real standouts.

That mirrors my own thoughts very well. The most consistent seasons are 3 through 5. Seasons 2 and 6 through 8 have a few clunkers in them.

Season 8 for sure, the Frank Grimes Episode, and the St. patrick's Day episode with Rex Banner and prohibition in springfield.

3-9 are the prime seasons. I'd say if you bought anything from 4-8 you wouldn't be disappointed, since the animation still isn't great in S3 and S9 marks the start of the show's decline (though it's still pretty great).

So, season 9 would also be worth a buy?

If you like the Simpsons in general, you will still like season 9. I vote for Season 7 for sure as Bart sells his soul is one of the best single episodes evah.

3 - 8 is "must buy", first half of Season 9 is the last of the classic episodes. City of New York vs. Homer Simpson is the season premiere.
