Re: Terriers -- "Sins of the Past" -- 11/17/10

This was an incredible episode. I am going to be so disappointed when this show doesn't get a second season. I am just amazed at the writing, the direction, and the acting. They should definitely submit this episode for consideration at the Emmys.

Take the flashbacks, for example. I can't think of another show that has so deftly transitioned back and forth between the past and the present. The scenes paralleled one another, the transitions were clever, and the characters genuinely seemed like different people.

I figured Hank and Britt met up while Hank was a cop, but it was great to see them first meeting. I loved how the final scene in the present and the flashback was in the same police station, in the jailhouse, only Hank walking away in a different manner. It was terrible watching Britt beat the wrong guy, but even more heartbreaking was seeing him react to Hank's confession. I figured they'd have Britt find out, but I never expected Hank to just come right out and tell him. I guess Hank thought he needed to just come clean so Britt wasn't sitting there all night thinking he was in the right. Still feel bad for him though; he just lost his fiance and now his best friend. He's gotta feel so betrayed right now.

Hank in the past was a wreck, I really felt bad for the guy. I'm glad we got to see him like that though, because it makes me appreciate more what he's been through and how far he's come. It's just great to see him having cleaned up and improving his life, even if he still has a long way to go. I like that he wasn't right about the rapist, but he was right about certain things, like being set up with the planting of evidence. I can see where his emotions got the better of him in the past, and it's nice that he's actually growing as a person and learning; you don't often see such great character development within the span of a season.

I hope beyond hope that this show gets renewed. I just want to spend more time with these characters. I know it won't get another season, but maybe someone at FX will throw Terriers a bone (pun intended) and stand by the promising new show.

---

Quick question for those that are privy to viewership and ratings. FX re-airs this show ALL THE TIME. I swear, every time it hits 11 or 12 there's a repeat of Terriers on FX. Does anyone know how this show does in repeat airings? Along those same lines, does it have a decent DVR audience?

That would have been a good series finale. Not a happy one, but wrapping up virtually everything with the characters, except the season long arc with the bad attorney. Given that it's almost certainly not getting renewed, I'm almost tempted to not watch the last 2.

I know it's pointless, but I sent an email praising the show, etc. to [email protected]. I've actually never done that for a show before, but I feel so strongly about the show that I went ahead and gave it a shot.

See now - had it not been for my DVR, I'd have totally forgotten this was even on last night. :(

I missed this one too. Not that I forgot about it; I just had some other things going on. I'll be sure to watch it from my DVR once I get the chance.

This is by FAR the best show on TV no one is watching.

The acting is brilliant, the characters are complex and flawed, and the stories are compelling. The scene at the house with gal and the ring and the dog was superbly done, just to name one. Why in the world are people not tuning in?

Plus you get things like: "The guy was wearing dark clothes!" "So what?! Lots of people do: They're slimming!!"

Alan Sepinwall says that the last two episodes wrap up the show very well and can work as both a season OR a series finale.

What? Besides the rapist (who was introduced in this episode) nothing was wrapped up.

- Katie and Britt are still apart
- Britt hates Hank's guts
- Gretchen won't talk to Hank
- Britt beat up the wrong guy
- etc.

Sometimes life doesn't have happy endings, shocking I know. Hank gets some closure from the case that ruined his life, but loses his friend. Britts life falls apart by losing his girl, and then making it worse by beating the wrong guy and is looking at jail/prison. Gretchen is done with hank and moved on. Those are endings, just not like the way people generally like. You could easily wrap up a show with that kind of conclusion.

"In other news, the FX show 'Terriers' has prompted a mass suicide after its unbelievably depressing ending. 'Thank goodness so few people were watching,' said one FX Network executive. 'This could have been a huge disaster.'"

I agree that this would have been a great bookend to a one season show, but I'm glad we get two more eps. I wish this show were super cheap to shoot, but somehow I doubt that it is. The ratings just aren't going to justify a second season. It's such a pity.

Still need ratings to go higher, but encouraging. RT @MichaelAusiello: Can a two-season pickup be far behind?! #Terriers

I wonder what caused the spike in viewership. Seems odd that on the 11th episode the numbers would increase so drastically. Still, I hope FX is paying attention. If the numbers increase through the season finale, maybe we'll get a second season after all. That said, I'm still preparing for no renewal.

It's kind of refreshing sometimes when there isn't a happy ending (except at the asian massage parlor). It would fit with the mood of this show.

This is my favorite show on TV right now. I watch a lot of TV, but I was actually surprised by who the rapist was. I love that this show sucks me in every week. I will be upset if there isn't a second season. If it is one and done, I will miss it. It is just quality television.

I have to agree. This and Breaking Bad remind me that truly great TV can still be produced.

Tim Minear, a veteran of Whedon shows like Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse, wrote this episode. I wouldn't be surprised if that accounts for the bump in viewership; Whedon fans know that Minear delivers the goods (as he did in this episode), and they tend to keep their feelers out for stuff like this.

Oh, and also, this show is fantastic. I hope it sticks around.

This show is better than anything on TV right now. It makes Blue Bloods look lame in comparison.
