No no. What I meant was, I'll be DVR'ing it on the HD channel, assuming I'm going to watch it the next day. If I end up watching it in SD earlier in the night (once it's actually available on a channel I get), then I'll just cancel the HD recording.

I can't commit to watching these types of shows every single day at the same time, so I'll play it by ear and see how it goes. :)

Conan O’Brien closed his final “Tonight Show” by playing rhythm guitar while Will Ferrell sang “Freebird,” then made his guitar skills a key part of his live tour, going so far as to record a song with Jack White in Nashville this summer, which they played together last night on Conan’s first TBS show. All of this runs counter to what O’Brien told Carson Daly on “Last Call” in 2002:

Said O’Brien then: “I remember when I was really interested in comedy and I was in high school, Alan Thicke had a talk show, and they had all these posters up everywhere like, ‘He’s coming, it’s gonna be better than Johnny Carson’ … and I watched his first show, and it was like, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, here he comes, Alan Thicke,’ and the doors opened, and he came running out, and the band’s rocking out, and he runs down to the band and he picks up a guitar and he starts rocking out with the band, and I was sitting there and I was 14 and I’m like, ‘You’re an ass.’ Click. I always knew that as a lesson, that [guitar playing] is my hobby, and I don’t like it when celebrities inflict their hobby [on the audience] … It’s one of those things that I’m very careful not to do.” [via NY Mag, video below]

Couple things here. First, Alan Thicke has some legitimate musical chops, as he wrote the theme songs to “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Facts of Life” (he also wasn’t one-tenth the TV host that Conan is). Second, in Conan’s defense, no one should be held accountable for what they say on “Last Call with Carson Daly.” And finally, if I had to guess, playing onstage with White likely served as a bookend to the musical interlude that began with “Freebird,” not as a signal of what’s to come.

Nevertheless: YouTube archives 1, Conan 0. YA BURNT.

Anybody notice the exit song is exactly the same as The Tonight Show and Late Night's? I guess NBC decided not to include that on the intellectual property list. I was happy to hear it anyway!

What about The Masturbating Bear? He was allowed to have that in a sketch.

It was SO good! I loved it so much I watched it again this afternoon!

It was OK.

The opening was great, although it would have been better with some blood squibs for the godfather shots. Come on, Conan, it's cable.

Monologue started strong but I was getting restless by the end and reminded that monologues are Conan's weakness. His banter with Andy at the desk was better. Also, I think Andy was trying to say he would get Conan's wife to let him into the bedroom one night to scare Conan with the mask, not that he would use the mask to hookup with Conan's wife.

The interviews were horrible. They felt very rehearsed and rushed. Seth's was a little better because he's more charismatic, but I have to knock of points for the annoying laugh. This is usually Conan's strength and should improve as things loosen up a bit.

The only redeeming thing about the musical bit was seeing Conan perform. I didn't particularly care for the song itself.

The Good:

• Opening skit (loved the Hamm cameo)
• Andy was surprisingly funny for a change
• The mask segment. Felt sorry for Conan because the "tears" comment from Andy but it was still hilarious.

The Bad:

• The monologue was god-awful. He has the worst monologue writers in the history of late night. 5-6 months to prepare it and that's what they came up with? Meh...
• Opening theme... really generic. Wish he kept his NBC theme but for obvious reasons, those bastards probably wouldn't let him keep it.
• Worst first show guest lineup ever. Conan was trying so hard to make that interview with the Glee girl work but it was painfully bad. Tired of Rogan so skipped most of that. Didn't care for Jack White.

All in all, it's good to have him back. Can't wait for the Tom Hanks interview. The two have excellent chemistry.

Also, did he mention Max at all? Is it true they had a falling out?

so it's totally incomprehensible for the guy to change his mind? also, he didn't have a CD of music out in 2002. maybe his passion for guitar went from a hobby, to something he wishes to incorporate into the show.

It doesn't seem like a falling out. From Wikipedia:

The split was stated as being mutual, with O'Brien saying, "Max has been a huge part of my life for the past 17 years and he is an incredible band leader and musician," and Weinberg thanking his band and saying, "17 years — a lifetime on TV ... my association with Conan, his staff, and crew has been a deeply rewarding experience for me." Weinberg subsequently acknowledged that "We both wanted to go in different directions," but both looked forward to Weinberg occasionally stopping by to sit in on the new show.[Weinberg said his health was better than ever but that the "life-changing experience emotionally and spiritually" of the surgery, a desire to remain in New Jersey with his family, and an interest in exploring new musical directions had all played a role in his departure from O'Brien.

I think Andy is funnier than Conan most times, and always seems like Conan sushes him up real quick when this happens:
1)The "tears" comment and the "walk in on your wife" comment while wearing the Conan mask (from Monday)
2)The "that would explain all the Over the Counter paternity tests" after changing from Maury Povich studio to Conan studio gig

I'm a huge Conan fan and think he's very funny, especially when he resorts to self-deprecation, but you're right Andy often outshines him and it does seem like they move on quickly when that happens. Not sure if it's intentional or not, but I noticed it as well, especially tonight with the amazing paternity tests joke. What's funny too is Andy seems like his stuff is a lot more impromptu and responsive, whereas Conan obviously relies on scripted jokes, which is fine, since he is the host and all.

Loved Tom Hanks. Wish they would've just had him on the whole night. He's a great sport, loved him getting doused with water. The Pixar stuff was hilarious too.

I'm actually not a huge fan of Conan with his guests. It's not that he's a bad interviewer, I just prefer his jokes skits. When I was younger I'd wake up for the start of his show, watch the first 30 minutes, then go back to sleep. I liked the stuff with the censor tonight, it was pretty good, especially the assless chaps reveal and the dubbing, although I felt they could have done more with the dubbing.

Tonight's episode felt more like it was back in the swing of things if you ask me. Pretty good interviews with Hanks and McBrayer and the Soundgarden performance was pretty awesome as well. It just felt to me like the show had a better flow tonight with a good combination of comedy and guest time. Last night the guests felt sort of rushed and the interviews weren't as good as they could have been because of that.
