I've always felt that Paradise Syndrome ranks right up there with the very best episodes, yet I rarely see it gather the praise it deserves. The final shot, with the end credits rolling over Kirk and Miramani, is extremely powerful and moving.

Season 3, in my view, is terribly under-appreciated. Yes, it has a few weak episodes to be sure... but it also has some of my very favorites, including:

Paradise Syndrome
Spectre of the Gun
Elaan of Troyus
Day of the Dove
Wink of an Eye
All Our Yesterdays
Turnabout Intruder

Overall, Season 2 is my favorite and I would rank them:

2
3
1

but any season of TOS is still better than 99% of the tv shows that have aired since, and TOS remains my all-time favorite tv series ever.

It's for a new Star Trek online game which details those events, but the other part of the timeline (the branching off with the events of the recent movie) is still legit.

They're using an online game for canon? That's odd.

Chew 10-29-10 11:18 AM

Ah, I didn't really notice it was a timeline map for the (MMO) game. Then whatever occured in 2399 was just so they could return the Klingons to being baddies again for game purposes.

I'll go with season 3 as well, if only for the simply wonderful "Turnabout Intruder" epsiode. Shatner's over-the-top style of acting was never more glorious than in that particular show.

The hand fidget he does with the quick "tootootootoo" sound is most excellent, a great finale when they exit into the elevator even though no one thought to make a true finale, it's still poignant like "alright guys but we gotta go and continue with our work buh bye."

All the events up to 2387 are canon. Everything after is in the game. If you ignore that part, the timeline diagram is very handy in explaining Trek09's place in history.

While I acknowledge that, quality-of-story-wise, the 1st Season is the "best,", I gotta pick Season 2 as my "favorite." The actors are comfortable in their roles, the creators are comfortable writing for them, Dr. McCoy has been bumped up to top billing, Chekov has joined the crew, and there's a touch more humor in the show (sometimes way more than a touch!). Really, any episode listing "Gene Coon" as producer (latter half of first season, roughly 1st half of second season) was probably the peak of the series.

Can't believe all the love in this thread for the 3rd season. I still love them all (TOS is my all-time favorite show), even bad Star Trek is better than no Star Trek, but some of those shows are rough going. At least even the really bad episodes have a redeeming moment or two.

With the way society recycles its styles every few decades, is it so hard to believe there will be space hippies at some point in the future? ;)

They even say it in the frakking movie: It's an alternate timeline. They made a point of saying that specifically so people like yourself wouldn't go grousing all over the internet about it "erasing 40 years of stories".

Thank you... I can't believe there only seem to be ten people in the world who understand this. I have a friend who's a hard-core ST fan, and no matter how often I explain it, he still doesn't get this!

And without a doubt, space-hippies automatically make any season of television the worst. ;)

Of course there will always be a counter-culture group but that episode was just horrendous. The only one really that I actively passionately disliked
