TCM: Moguls and Moviestars, 7 Part documentary, debuts 11/01/10

I didn't find a thread for this here, but I saw an ad for this at the movie theater yesterday, and it looked pretty interesting. A history of the Hollywood industry from around 1889 - 1970. Movies that are discussed within the series will also be shown during the seven weeks that the program airs. I hope it gets a BD/DVD release.

Mondays at 8.p.m. EST, beginning November 1st.

Sweet. Our crappy cable company just started carrying TCM. I've been looking forward to checking out one of their big productions.

There are several repeat showings on their schedule for those of you that missed it.

Episode one repeats Saturday at noon (9 am Pacific) and again Monday evening before the premiere of episode two.

It looks like each episode shows twice on Mondays, and then again on Wednesday, Saturday and on the following Monday.

Thanks for the reminder. This does sound really interesting. I already set my DVR to record the episode 1 re-air on Monday and the next 2 episodes after that.

I wish TCM would focus less on the 30s/40s/50s big studio movies and more on international and b movie stuff. How many times can they reshow Adventures of Robin Hood until i want to eat every smiling asshole's brains in there, how about King Kong vs. Godzilla or Danger!! Death Ray at least 1 time.

Did anyone catch pt 2 last night? I thought it was interesting that everyone who was making movies in the 1890's & early 1900's were pretty much out of the game by 1915.

Yes. It was part of the evolution of the movies. By 1915 the movies had become more story driven. Before that, the primary novelty was that the pictures moved.

The same thing happened again when sound ended the careers of a lot of actors.

I kept comparing the silent movies to Lethal Weapon 5 and they came up woefully short.

This is the second time today that I've heard a Lethal Weapon 5 reference. What are you referencing? Someone please explain.

Re: TCM: Moguls and Moviestars, 7 Part documentary, debuts 11/01/10

I thought these last three episodes were very insightful into film's silent era, which is an era I really don't know that much about. With the next episode being the transition from the silent era to the sound era, I started wondering, after talkies came out was there any kind of re-release market for silent films? It seems like silent films were largely forgotten until the '70s and '80s when they begin showing up on the Z channel and VHS.

It's true. Just about every major silent film had been remade by the 1940s as a sort of "Out with the old and in with the new".

Fantastic show/series, BTW.

We missed the very first installment! Does anyone know if they are going to sell this series on DVD?
