The Office -- "Counseling" -- 09/30/10

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Corporate pushes Michael into counseling sessions with his office nemesis---Toby. Meanwhile, Dwight launches a mission of revenge against the mall-shop owner who rebuffed him; and Pam sets out to change her job title.

I am looking forward to this, but not too keen on more Michael and Toby crap, which is getting kind of old.

I've always enjoyed Michael's irrational hatred of Toby.

But we really haven't had their back-and-forth as much lately.

Not that many funny moments this episode, but I like how they are possibly setting Michael's character up to leave.

I'm not really sure I like the idea that Pam is trying to lie her way into a higher-paying position in the office? Seems totally out of character.

I didn't watch the episode yet, but her character turned into a complete bitch last season so I wouldn't say that lying her way into a better job is out of character at all. Based on her character from last season I'd say it's par for the course.

What'd she do last season? All I remember is her being a little hormonal when she was pregnant and her being upset when Michael dated her mom?

Well, after last week's pretty good start, tonight's show seemed to completely tank. The Pam subplot seemed out of character and stupid, as previously mentioned. The Dwight subplot was just as stupid and ridiculous. The Michael and Toby plot was decent, but it still didn't really accomplish anything.

Pretty forgettable episode.

Erin and the disposable camera bit was good.

Yeah, agree. Too much silly and unbelievable in this episode, and not much of it was all that funny. Pam is cute, of course, but that's about all this one had to offer.

The Dwight stuff was silly, but even still had some comical lines. Liked the rest of the episode quite a bit.

I thought the Pam subplot was hilarious and perfectly in character. Her interview about commissions being unfair was great. Erin's line about the disposable camera, on the other hand, seemed ridiculously cartoonish.

Michael and Toby scenes are just awesome. Had me cracking up the whole time. It was a different avenue for Pam's character to take but I thought it was fine. Dwight, Jim, and Andy were great in the mall. Good stuff this week.

This one had it's moments. I liked the Pam stuff, even if it was kind of out of character. I really liked the end of that plot when Gabe refused to say she was lying. The Toby and Michael stuff was pretty good too. Personally, I thought it was better then last weeks episode.

Re: The Office -- "Counseling" -- 09/30/10

I didn't think this week was the funniest episode I've seen (although I thought the bit with Erin was hilarious), but I really enjoyed the Michael and Toby stuff. I'm one who gets pretty tired of Michael's hatred of Toby, but these scenes were great. I enjoyed seeing Michael in a vulnerable state and it seemed like there was actual character development going on. I think this show is best when there's a little bit of drama mixed in with the silliness.

As far as Pam goes, I felt like what she did was pretty in line with her character. Not season 1 Pam, but the more assertive and confrontational Pam that we've seen in the last year or two. I'm not saying I like or dislike her character as it is, but she's a long way from the shrinking wallflower she started as. And besides, just like Jim as manager, it didn't feel right with Pam being a salesman.

Oh, and can they please dump Ryan already? I realize that contractually they have to put him in the credits and on all the promo art, etc..., but it's pretty stupid. He's just sort of there in the background. They haven't done anything interesting with him since the Michael Scott Paper Company.

Ryan's not going anywhere. In fact, BJ Novak, who plays Ryan, wrote this episode.

I understand he's a writer and producer and all that. I'm just saying they should dump his character. He doesn't add anything to the show any more. I'm not even sure what his job is at this point. They had that story last year where he and Dwight were going to sabotage Jim after his promotion, but that went nowhere. In fact I don't even remember them doing anything after they agreed to team up.

I guess I wouldn't care, but he still appears in the opening credits and on the promo art with Michael, Jim, Pam, Dwight, and now Andy, while characters that actually bring something to the table do not. For some reason that really bugs me.
