Lone Star -- "One in Every Family" -- 09/27/10

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
In order to ease Clint's suspicions regarding the new windfarm deal, Bob recruits the man who taught him everything about being a con man to help him with the scheme: his father. Meanwhile, Lindsay begins to realize that she may not know Bob as well as she thought, and Cat is forced to repeatedly bail her brother Drew out of trouble.

This might be the make it or break it episode for this series. If this finishes below a 2.0 in the demos and below 5M viewers again, especially after House It's history.

I recommended a couple to check out the encore airing of the pilot episode this past Saturday. Both liked it, so this should increase total viewership to 17.

I'll record it and wait and see if there's an ep next week before I watch.

That's the big problem with networks being so quick to cancel a show. Are viewers not tuning in because they don't like the show? Or are people not tuning in because they're expecting cancellation?

I don't think a carbon blob follows the ratings. In this case, they are likely not tuning in because it's in a brutal timeslot with established highly rated programming opposite it.

It's a shame this isn't a CW show. It could survive there with crap ratings.

CW focuses on the female 18-34 demos so this show is probably too old for them. Fox promoted the heck out of this show (and the critics loved it) but I still don't know what the story is about and they couldn't really explain it in a 30 sec promo. It was given the spot after Fox's number 1 drama show. People just did not watch it.

The ads had me believing this was about a con man living a double life - trying to take over his father-in-law's business while doing "something" else (sexing up aside) with another lady in another town. No idea what that "something" else is yet since I missed the pilot.

Yeah - from what I remember seeing of previews, the basic premise is there: con-man + double-life with 2 good-looking wives. Not sure what else you need.

Maybe it just doesn't fit well with House. I know I can't stand House.

Maybe it suffers from not having that recognizable a cast. Jon Voigt is the only reasonably major name.

The acting on this show is superb, especially in regards to the main guy. I hope it gets a reprieve. I'll watch as many episodes as they can air.

I'm going to guess that number is going to be three (maybe just two?) being this 2nd here just cratered rating wise..

geeesh..
http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/rati...for-lone-star/
"the soap (1.0/3) fell 23% from its disastrous premiere rating and tied the CW for fourth place in the 9 PM hour. What's worse, the numbers fell precipitously from the first to the second half-hour, by almost 50%."

I still like the show being I enjoy a conman sort of theme but this ep was a horrible "hey I know you missed the pilot but maybe you should check out this show anyways" sort of ep..
Show a guy being bored at a desk job? Hey guess what, that's sort of boring to watch!. click turn station.. I know why they did that story wise, it's was good story telling, just not a good -ep two, save this show- story telling..

IMO the show's whole problem can be summed up in the scene where the guy, in what is shot as this deep meaningful tender feeling moment, goes on and on with wife #2 about how she HAS to have this great wedding moment, as he flashes back to his wedding to wife #1, that he is still married too..

errrrrrrrrrr so just who is that meant to capture audience wise? guys? No.. Females? No.. Sort of explains the rating crater..

Re: Lone Star -- "One in Every Family" -- 09/27/10

I barely kept interest in the second episode because I kept on thinking the show was doomed. Oh, well. The pilot was OK, but I just didn't care much for the premise...a con man decides to try to make things right and juggle two marriages at the same time. I would rather he be the antihero and the father trying to come clean and the main character wanted to keep the con alive.

It seems like it's not much point in thinking too much about this show now anyway.

Re: Lone Star -- "One in Every Family" -- 09/27/10

I'm actually watching the second episode right now.

I can see that the show is well acted, and filmed very well. The story is pretty good if not more than a little implausible.

But beyond that, I can see exactly the reasons why this show lasted 8 days:

1) The cast. It's Jon Voight and a bunch of no-names. I'm not saying they're not good actors or that their performances were a problem, but there was nobody to sell to the audience.

2) The story. Again, it's not a bad story they're telling, but it's not something that is easy to get into. I think somebody in the pilot thread said "who are we supposed to root for here?" I think a lot what would have been the audience asked that same question.

3) The time slot. It's the toughest time slot on television. DWTS, Football, 2 1/2 Men, WWE Raw, it's completely stacked. It's very hard to break into the slot, and only one show was able to do that...

4) The Event. This show improves on its lead-in, and slaughtered Lone Star, which lost over half of its lead-in. Losing to Dancing and CBS is one thing, but getting killed by a new show that has a far worse lead-in is unacceptable.

Kinda funny that they ran a preview for next week. Guess we'll never see Andie McDowell, unless FOX puts them on Hulu.

How about tying Gossip Girl and the CW in the demos that Fox cares about?

Lone Star (57 minutes)
- 3.226 million viewers
- 2.1/3 HH
- 1.0/3 A18-49

Gossip Girl
- 1.784 million viewers
- 1.3/2 HH
- 1.0/2 A18-49
- 1.3/4 A18-34
- 2.1/5 W18-34

Goodbye. Lonestar.

Re: Lone Star -- "One in Every Family" -- 09/27/10

Too bad. It looked like things were about to get interesting with Andie McDowell joining the cast next week too.

But really, how could they not have expected this? This is not the kind of show that people give up their dancing stars, over-hyped mystery, & sitcom comfort food for.

Oh well, at least with Lie To Me returning I can add to the endless list of procedurals I don't watch.

Hey David Keith isn't exactly a no-name actor (the guy on the far right). His resume goes back almost 30 years.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001418/

He's more of a character supporting actor, but I do remember him from An Officer and a Gentleman and Firestarter.

Also, Adrianne Palicki was on Friday Night Lights for 3 seasons.

I never watched that crap. Monday night has been dead to me for a few seasons now and with this show going off the air it will continue to be a day to catch up on DVR shows or DVDs/Blu Rays.

Good episode. The show feels like a cross between Dexter and White Collar, it definitely was one of the best shows on at the moment, it's unfortunate that it's been cancelled. Another great show that has fell victim to poor ratings, sad.

This was not near as good as Dexter.
