Every time Pitt was on screen, all I could think was "he's playing the DiCaprio role." I've not seen him in much, so I don't have much of an opinion of him at this point.

All I'm wondering is how long they could potentially keep this series going if they want to stick to real history. I don't think Jimmy Darmody was a real life person, but I could be wrong.

per Wikipedia:

When prohibition went into effect in 1920, Torrio pushed for the gang to enter into bootlegging, but Colosimo refused. In May 1920, Colosimo went out of town to marry his second wife, Dale Winter (he had deserted his first wife). After Colosimo returned to Chicago a week later, Torrio called him and let him know about a shipment arriving at his cafe. When Colosimo appeared at the cafe to wait for its delivery, he was shot and killed. The initial murder suspect was his new wife Dale, but no one was ever arrested for the murder. It was widely believed that Torrio ordered Colosimo's killing so that the gang could enter the lucrative bootlegging business. Torrio reportedly brought in New York colleague, Frankie Yale, to murder Colosimo. Al Capone has also been suspected as Colosimo's assassin.[4]

Colosimo was the first to organize disparate parts of Chicago's crime scene. After his death, his gang was controlled first by John Torrio and then Al Capone. It would become the infamous Chicago Outfit.[5]

Great start to the series. I actually like Michael Pitt and think he'll do a decent job with his role. The pilot definitely had Scorsese's footprint all over. I hope this pulls in good ratings -- HBO has been promoting the hell out of it.

LOVED it. HBO does nothing half way--they totally recreated 1920 (as far as I could tell). I loved Buscemi and am glad he's got a lead role in a great show. I actually think he pulls it off. I'm glad they beat the )!@(*# out of that wife-beater before they chucked him in the water.

When you think about it the Booze heist actually helps Nucky. Since Rothstein and Luciano essentially ripped him off for it to begin with. They will probably think Nucky was behind the bloodbath and it sends a message that he isnt to be fucked with.

Everything about the opening credits was awful. I don't know what the hell they were thinking.

I thought he looked pretty much like himself, just older

I loved the first episode, can't wait for the rest!

Cool to see Molly Parker in the picture as Nucky's dead wife Mabel.

Liked it a good deal overall.

I do have to agree that the intro was terrible, though. Unusual considering how good the openings usually are for HBO shows (Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Carnivale and True Blood come to mind).

Agreed - that was a nice touch. I didn't notice it during the initial viewing, but re-watched it during the encore presentation (HBO aired this 3 times last night).

I thought that was really odd to have it be somebody known. Anybody know if she'll be showing up in flashback or some form or another?

I really liked it. Great cast. I always enjoy seeing Buscemi and Michael Shannon. I even liked Pitt, who I normally don't much care for.

If it turns out to be Emmy-bait, they'll keep it around for a while even with lousy ratings. But it'll have to pick up best dramatic series and/or Buscemi as best actor.

My heart skipped a beat when they showed Molly Parker...ahhhh, Deadwood.

And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who was thrown off by the opening credits. Especially the music. Just doesn't seem consistent with the show.

^ Music seemed consistent with a Scorsese picture, but not for something in the 1920s.

Since when has this already been proven a ratings flop?

Re: Boardwalk Empire --> "Boardwalk Empire" --> 09/19/10

Damn good show.

I'm excited to see more Michael Shannon. I can already tell he will have some scene stealing performances. Buscemi actually wasn't as strong as I had hoped. As for Pitt, and I guess Scorsese, stop telling us stories of trench warfare and show it to us! By the third time he was whining "I saw things" I was expecting Buscemi to slap him in the face.

Re: Boardwalk Empire --> "Boardwalk Empire" --> 09/19/10

I was underwhelmed, honestly. It felt by the numbers, and yes, Michael Pitt is definitely the DiCaprio stand-in (although a good actor in his own right). I really like that period in American history so I'll keep watching for now, but I hope it gets better than this pilot.

Re: Boardwalk Empire --> "Boardwalk Empire" --> 09/19/10

caught this last nigh and thoroughly enjoyed it. Casting, acting and directing were perfect and finally glad to see Buscemi get the lead role on something.

For those wondering, I read somewhere yesterday that the first episode cost a cool $18mil to make.

Re: Boardwalk Empire --> "Boardwalk Empire" --> 09/19/10

What a great show !! Can't wait to see another episode and see if they can keep up the momentum.

I hope that they don't try to make this into a 'Departed' 1920's type of plot.. where one guy is a double agent for the Feds, etc..

History doesn't need to be rewritten - just tell the story.

I might be the only one who actually thought the credits were well done. That got my attention right away.

Been a good couple days for new premieres. A little hard to follow, but a very good premiere. The backgrounds and costuming were terrific.

The premiere pulled in 4.8M viewers -- HBO's largest in over 6 years.
