MAD MEN - Pete/Don [spoilers]

I love the show, and Don Draper and Pete Campbell are my two favorite male characters on the show. That said, I am surprised at Draper's acceptance of Campbell as a "partner" in the new firm. I don't know if I'd be able to reconcile myself to what Pete Campbell "did to me," if I were Don.

I know Don respects Pete's talents, but I don't necessarily buy Don's "forgiving nature," for lack of a better phrase?

Don, of all people, understands what people will do to get ahead. If anything, he might respect Pete more for his "blackmail" attempt.

If he didn't bring Pete on to SCDP that would be all the more reason for Pete to squeal about it to whomever.

All fine and well, but Don actually treats Pete very good - even defends him when he's right. Almost like there was no negative history between the two. It doesn't seem to me like Don is "pretending" because he's afraid of Pete squealing.

One day Don should challenge Pete to a fist fight...then it'd be over.

I think when Cooper showed that he doesn't give a shit about Don's former life he stopped caring. Plus he respects those that are good at their job, and Pete certainly is. I think he actually has more hate for Roger than Pete at this point.

re: MAD MEN - Pete/Don [spoilers]

You're forgetting or overlooking that Pete was the right man for the job at that exact moment in time.

Don and Roger were putting together what would become SCDP in less than 24 hours, and they needed a guaranteed portfolio of clients. Roger had Lucky Strike in his pocket but nothing else. They correctly suspected that Pete was the kind of account man who had already a "you'll come with me if I go to another agency" deal with some of his clients.

Recall, that when Don and Roger visited Pete (who was calling in sick and planning to jump ship) at home, they asked him if he had clients that he could contact and bring with him to the new agency, and Pete pulled a box out from under the bed (or something like that). Don and Roger might have wanted Ken Cosgrove more, but if they had approached him, would Ken have been prepared to turn traitor like Pete was? Doubt it.

The same nature that made Pete try to blackmail Don was the thing that made Pete the right man for the job at that exact moment in time.

re: MAD MEN - Pete/Don [spoilers]

I think it's a combination of factors. Cooper didn't care so Pete was shut down. Pete got better at his job, and Don respects people who are good at their job. If you're good at your job he doesn't really care what you do outside the office. Also, Pete backed Don during Duck's little power play in season 2. I'm sure Don remembered that too. Finally, I don't think Don's speech in Pete and Trudy's apartment was all BS. There was some truth there.
