Re: Futurama -- 100th Episode/Season Finale -- "The Mutants Are Revolting" -- 9/2/10

There's a great interview with David X Cohen at iFMagazine

Some general highlights...
  • Comedy Central ordered 26 episodes and is splitting them into two thirteen-episode seasons, making this Season 6 and the 2011 broadcast Season 7
  • The time machine episode was Groening's idea and something they had wanted to do for a while; Cohen considers it one of the best episodes they've ever done
  • The Holiday Special will air on November 21st (more details about the actual episode spoilered below)
  • They didn't plan to have Episode 100 be the Season 6 Finale
  • Cohen isn't sure, but thinks Season 7 will probably start summer 2011 and run roughly the same schedule as this season
  • These 13 episodes should be released on DVD sometime in December, and there will be commentaries on the DVD
  • Cohen still very much wants to do a Futurama feature film
  • No word yet on whether or not they will get another episode order from Comedy Central

Some future episode highlights...

Spoiler:
  • The 2011 finale is going to be an anthology episode called "Resurrection" and will show Futurama in several different styles of animation
  • The Holiday Special will be a three-part anthology episode looking at X-Mas, Robonica, and Kwanza, will have guest appearances by Coolio and Al Gore and will air on November 21st
  • Season 7 will have a Robot Mafia episode (Bender witnesses a crime and goes into witness protection), a Flashback episode explaining how Zoidberg and the Professor met

I was satisfied with the finale. Not my favourite episode of the season, but not the worst. It had its moments for sure. I got a great laugh when Hermes said, "100 deliveries! That's...10 deliveries a year!" Fry certainly was gross-looking. Did they explain how/why he didn't mutate?

I loved the Robot 1X cameo at Bender's party

Spoiler:

He stepped into the mouth of Mr. Astor instead of the actual radioactive runoff. By lodging himself in Mr. Astor's mouth, Fry was protected from the runoff's mutating elements.

I loved the exchange between Fry and Leala even though it was used a lot:

Awww. I'll give you a kiss. A hug. A handshake. I'll text ya. (paraphrased)

Bender actually getting sad at the party when no one from the crew was there was pretty touching.

These episodes flew by. The most memorable for me were the time machine episode and the brain switching one.

The finale was pretty good.

"Play Whip It!!"
"No, play the other one." DEVO

Great, great season. The only downside is that there was not a single appearance by Tinny Tim, even though just about every other character that has ever appeared in Futurama was featured in the party scene. I wonder why.

And to DEVO being immortalized in a Futurama episode.

I imagine we'll see him in the Holiday Special.

Question... What did I miss with that opening shot? When the Professor says "good news everyone" on the outdoor megaphones, mounted on the rooftop. Was it a reference or something?

Just curious, are the movies counted in the Episode count, and if so, as the split versions?

Yes, they count as 16 episodes in total.

Episode was okay, sad that this "season" is over already. Loved all the past characters showing up to the party. Wonder if there is a list on the interwebs somehwhere? Will have to look around.

Anyone else notice the anchovies on the ground near the sunken land ship? Same ones in that ep where Fry becomes a millionaire. Nice callback, I thought.
