Mad Men is at its worse when they focus on either:
1. Betty and her shit 'life'
2. That Fival c*nt Peggy

I like Peggy. She gets into some weird shit.
It's going to be tough topping, let alone matching, last week's episode.

As for Betty, I think there is way too much hatred(misogyny?) for Betty/January. Obviously, you haven't spent that much time around beauty queen types, but she is a dead-on portrayal of one. Like a lot of really hot women, she's been spoiled and the center of attention her whole life. So there's not a lot of depth to her personality, she's vain, shallow and bored(and a terrible mother!) but that doesn't mean that she's not an interesting character. I think Peggy and Joan are better, more interesting female characters, but eventually Betty will have to 'grow up', and that is likely to be a pivotal moment in the series, imo.
She's had some great moments in the series, masturbating with the washing machine(!), shooting in the backyard, dragging Sally away from Thanksgiving dinner("stop pinching me!).
BTW, great example of Life imitating Art, guess who the new model is for London Fog(well you can figure it out by looking at the link!)

I believe he meant "Fievel," the mouse from An American Tail. He was calling her mousey.
Misogyny. We don't hate her because she's a woman, we hate her because her character is one note and lately her storyline has become thoroughly uninteresting. You're right that she's had interesting moments, but most of them were in the first two seasons. And I don't care if she's just like real life beauty queens. This is TV. The characters feel real because they're nuanced and layered. Betty sticks out like a sore thumb.

Don's line was prescient: "Just because I got nominated doesn't mean they're going to give me an award." Could the writers have known this would air on Emmy night?
Well, Jon may have lost, but at least Don got a Clio!

For some reason this didn't record for me, and when I flipped over to AMC it looks like it's not non-anamorphic widescreen.

The Peggy storylines bore/annoy me, but the backstory of Don & Roger was excellent. So did Roger really tell Don he was hired, or did Don just make that up? Kinda looked like the latter from the look he made at the end in the elevator...

He definitely conned Roger into hiring him.

I think Roger hired him while drunk. It mirrored what went on in present day with Don being drunk and pitching the slogan to Life and the other stuff with the new kid and not remembering it.

I really liked the episode. The timing (opposite the Emmys) couldn't have been accidental. I like the Roger story arc of him feeling less and less useful as Don usurps him in the agency and Pete takes over Don's role. The contrast between that and the flashback was very poignant in a Godfather Part II kind of way.
Didn't really get the whole Peggy storyline; felt more like an excuse to riff on boner jokes. Maybe it'll pay off more next episode.
I wonder how long they'll dwell on Don's downward spiral. It can get played out and I'm a little scared to see where rock-bottom is. But the missing day was pretty scary (as was that waitress - yeesh).

The whole scene with the waitress I kept thinking that Jon Hamm was probably on set reacting like this clip from Extras:

I really liked Peggy this week, although post pregnancy I usually do like her. The hotel scene was probably my favorite this week.
Wish we had seen more of Roger and Don's past.

Roger never did much to begin with. Cooper at one point told Don the only reason he was there was because of his father and his money. He networks and schmoozes. I do think he sees Don taking his place as the face of the firm though.

With everything that was going on in this episode, Vincent Kartheiser somehow stole the best moments. Pete is really coming into his own this season and I love it.

Another excellent ep!
"Cure for the common breakfast" cute slogan, loved how they handled that, and the juxtposition of flashback with Roger and Don first meeting and Don getting his break. Good stuff.
I love Peggy and think she and Don are the the glue for the show. Don the old guard, Peggy the new generation of workplace change. Thought her strip scene was great.
Pete irks me, and I liked how Consgrove swallowed his pride in bowing to Pete, on the other hand, I think he knows he is a better manager than Pete, good stuff between them awaits.
Don's bender looks like one for the ages. The original Hangover, all that was missing was a kitty, a missing tooth and Jake LaMotta in the next room.
