Battlestar Galactica - Which to watch first?
 

I just picked up the complete Battlestar Galactica series on Blu-Ray yesterday. Since I have never watched a single episode of this newer version, I wanted to see where the additional movies fall into place in the series. I picked up the DVD of the 2-hour pilot/movie that started this series, so I know I should watch that first.

Does "Razor" "The Plan" and "Caprica" take place prior to the series itself? Or should I watch the complete series and then pick up these additional movies?

Caprica is a prequel, but I don't think it matters, especially since it's airing now, after BSG's run. I wouldn't watch Razor or The Plan before watching the series. I don't know if I can recommend either at all, to be frank.

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking that "Caprica" came out after the original series but I wasn't sure if it took place before hand. Guess I know now..

Don't worry about the pilot/dvd. That is on the first episodes of your Blu-Ray set, just watch that and return the DVD if you can.

Why not start with the first disc of the first set and go in chronological order from there?

I think you sort of have to watch Razor, it sets up some things for season 4.

As mentioned in the other thread, Razor was shown between seasons 3 and 4. It was included as the start of the season 4.0 DVD set so I assume it'd be in that spot in your set as well, which is where you'd want to watch it.

Seriously. I was about to come in here and say watch the first 3 seasons, then Razor, then skip to the series finale. ;) Caprica is nothing great.

Also note that apparently there are extended episodes but they are on different discs (i.e. one regular episode might be on disc 1, but the extended ep is on disc 2). I don't know what episodes specifically, but had read that in a review.

I would also suggest you just watch the extended versions of episodes and skip the regular versions. There were a few occasions in Season 2 where the "Previously on" segment before the episode had footage that wasn't in the broadcast versions of previous episodes. Needless to say, I was confused because here they were referencing things I hadn't seen despite the fact that I hadn't missed a single episode.

The pilot movie is in the complete set so you can return the DVD of just the pilot if you can.

Watch it in this order:

Caprica
The miniseries
Seasons 1-3
Razer
Season 4
The Plan

Caprica is a true prequel, but doesn't spoil the series at all; if anything, if you watch it beforehand, it just adds another layer of depth to the story.

You would think so.....BUT....I haven't.. :( Work, life and other Blu-Rays have pushed this back for me... The plan is to get started on this in the next week or so once football is over. My wife isn't into the series and she will busy on Saturdays for the next two months. Going to watch it then..

Watching Caprica first kills a major twist in Caprica. It isn't all that important, but it was certainly a fun surprise. I'd say watch everything in release order except the Plan. I'd watch the Plan right before the 3-part series finale.

I thought Razor was supposed to be watched in Season 2 after "The Captain's Hand"?

If you pickup the box set start with the 1st set and work your way thought them to 4.5. If you watch The Plan a movie they made after they made the show, "The Have a Plan" came from that one line. The fan's (Like myself) they forgot to tell you what the plan was. They also did not count right so there is a 7th Cylon is this the father of the 3rd angel.

Caprica is really about the man, girl and the one God(or in his name) that started it all. In short a Ghost in the Cylon.

Also with the Blue box set make sure you do not hit play all. By doing this your only going to get the air version and there are 3 (plus the last) that are over a hour each. The last one(3) is a total of 3:32 minutes long.

BTW if you pickup any movie outside the box blu set. Take them back. You bought them in the box set.

Is The Plan now in the box set? I bought it on release day and it was not included (I don't think it had even been released yet).

I've been planning on watching this show at some point.

Paramount+ has added The Mini series, The Plan and the 4 seasons of the 2004 series.

I know there are a handful of other things in this series like Razor and some web shows.

Should I watch the Mini before season 1?

Wont be watching Caprica until some other point

The miniseries is basically the first part of the first season.

It goes like this:

Miniseries
Season One
Season Two
Season Three
Razor Miniseries
Season Four

And the ancillary material is The Plan, Blood and Chrome, the Caprica series, and a couple of webisode stories.

Me and wifey are re-watching the entire series on Blu-ray now. We just started the final season last night. Still a great show but like most the quality starts to go down as it goes along. Season 4 is a little iffy at times. I’m not a fan of all the creative decisions but it is what it is. As for what to watch, Josh-da-man has the right order, IMO.

Also, The Plan, Blood & Chrome, and Caprica should probably be viewed after watching the full series.

There are three webisode series, Resistance, Razor, and Face of the Enemy. I am unsure if these are available on streaming platforms. Resistance and Razor were included on the blu-rays, but Face of the Enemy wasn't released on the discs.

Face of the Enemy is one of the things that led to the writers' strike in 2007, and it's become difficult to find. An incomplete version is up on Youtube.

The webisodes should be watched along with the series or after, as they are spoilery.

Razor (both tv movie and webisodes) is best watched between episodes 17 and 18 of season two.

Resistance takes place between seasons two and three.

Face of the Enemy takes place between episodes 11 and 12 of season four.

When the you of 16 years ago is talking about something you have very little memory of it's a weird feeling.
