Directed by: Bill Condon
Starring: Laura Linney, Oliver Platt, John Benjamin Hickey, Gabourey Sidibe

Synopsis:
Spoiler:
A suburban mom, diagnosed with cancer, tries to find the humor in the disease.

Cathy Jamison wants a pool in her absurdly tiny garden. She has just been diagnosed with terminal stage 4 melanoma, and she wants that pool. Now.

Laura Linney stars in Showtime's cancer comedy, "The Big C."Cathy, played by award-winning actress Laura Linney, is an uptight suburban teacher with an immature husband and a brat for a son. She is also the lead character in America's first TV comedy about cancer.

My Thoughts:
Not sure if this is just premiering on DirecTV (TV101) this week or all satellite providers, but official is after Weeds on Monday, 8/16/10.

The trailers made it look really good and I was especially attracted by the great casting of Linney and Platt. Very good premiere I thought. Shows a lot of heart and humor and looks promising. Rough around the edges for 1st ep. but I think that is normal usually.

Hopefully, Showtime contines the streak of strong, yet flawed women in central roles (Weeds, Nurse Jackie). Look forward to more.

Anyone else catch this last night?

It's been on Showtime On Demand for the past week-and-a-half, but I haven't caught it yet myself.

I caught the series premiere on demand a couple of weeks ago, and I really enjoyed it.

I thought it was funny and well-acted. Not a fan of series dealing with sickness, but this and Breaking Bad I can handle.

I'm a big fan of Laura Linney and hope this show is a success.

Hopefully, Weeds will give it a nice lead in tonight for the first ep.

I enjoyed the pilot. It has some funny moments and good dialog.

The son needs to be bitch-slapped though.

I agree.

I enjoyed it, and I went in knowing nothing about it.

Good pilot. Horrible promo still.

Did they really have to do the bathrobe boob-tease? (Not that I'm complaining, it was just weird.

Sure sounds like a complaint.

It's a good kind of complaining, then.

Anyone else watching this? Linney is as beautiful as ever, and the story is really engaging. I love it.

2nd ep. was meh. the brother and son really annoy me, but Linney and Platt are excellent. Gabby Sidibe surprised me though and is very funny and playing an extrmemly fun character. loved the very end of the bus scene when the kids were hanging out of the bus and she said something while holding the paintball gun that seemed improvised and genuinely funny. not sure if enough to sell me the show though.

I like the show and I'm going to keep following it, and I know this is a weird complaint, but does Linney strike anyone else as TOO good? Every time she says anything it feels like she's delivering a theater monologue. It just strikes me as jarring and out of place. It might just be a style I'll have to get used to, but for now it's sort of distracting. That said, I'm interested in seeing where everything goes.

I'm still enjoying the show after then 2nd episode. Hopefully the son wont be such a snot forever.

The brother I dont have a problem with right now, and he could be an interesting character. But I hope we're not just going to see him spew his environmental/earth-saving protests from the streets every episode. It's already starting to get old.

It would be kind of neat if the Precious chick actually loses weight as the show goes on to tie in with her character losing weight.

she's only in 2 of the next 7 eps. (which is too bad) so i wouldn't think so.

Is this show any good?

There doesn't seem to be anyone keeping up with the episodes for the show. Been wanting to check it out, but I don't have Showtime and hear very little about it.

Anyone have any opinions of the show?

I like Linney, and Platt, but everyone else is pretty lame.

I dropped it after about 3 episodes.

I thought Platt was seriously miscast as Linney's husband.

Linney's character really started bugging me, how she wouldn't tell anyone she was sick and then be frustrated because her son wanted to go away for the summer.

If she is going to go crazy spending money because she is going to die, why not also let her loved ones know so they can enjoy every moment with her? The whole show seems based on her being selfish.

I like the show for the most part. If it was an hour long it might be harder to sit through, but at 30 min it moves at a pace where I can just sit and enjoy the ride without stopping to think where it is going.

Holy crap... no posts in this thread for over a month.

Is anyone else actually watching this show?

I'm enjoying this series. The characters are interesting and have their share of flaws.

The latest episode had a nice sad moment in it. Really interested to see the finale next week.

I hope this show isn't getting ignored because it follows Weeds - which many seemed to have dropped like a hot potato.

Overall I enjoy this show, but there's always at least one scene in every episode that feels more like it was written for a one-woman stage show than a TV series. Is it in her contract that Linney gets one monologue per episode? It always throws me out of the show and feels like forced whimsy.

With that off my chest, the ending of tonight's show was heart wrenching. Marlene was maybe my favorite character.

Liam Neeson  Awesome as always.

I've really enjoyed this show. Looking forward to the finale next week.

I've watched all the episode up to now, it's an okay show, but it really stretched my patience with her keeping her condition from her husband for so long.

^ She justified it pretty good though.

Really great finale. The last scene with Adam was very well done.
