In the series premiere episode, home cooks from all over the country present their signature dishes to the three judges in the hopes of being awarded the coveted MASTERCHEF apron, which guarantees them a spot in the next round of competition.

I'm not really feeling this one. I'll tune in at first just because it's after Hell's Kitchen. I think Masterchef will be a donkey free zone.

The UK version of Masterchef is great and has been going on for over a decade

The Australian version is the nation's highest rated tv show

This isn't the right show for Ramsay. He is too tarnished by Hell's kitchen. Masterchef is supposed to be on the level, not rigged and overproduced like Hell's Kitchen

I love Masterchef Goes Large. John Torode is great. Being Foxified, this won't be nearly as good. However, I'll still be tuning in.:)

I don't like warm and fuzzy Ramsey. I like the veins popping out of his neck , filled with piss and vinegar Ramsey. Unfortunately this show appears to feature the former.

Actually from watching "The F Word" on BBC America I really liked him when he wasn't an all out ball buster. He actually has a good sense of humor and personality when Fox execs don't have their hand up his ass. He still has that edge, but he is more personable I guess.

I felt same thing - he's also act like that in Kitchen Nightmare (BBC version). But I do like him when he's completely pissed off - it's damn entertainment.

Yeah without a doubt I agree with you. He just seems more natural on the BBC shows.

It seems like some of you have an issue with nice Gordon and Evil Gordon. I don't have an issue with nice Gordon as long as it stays with cooking. What I hated about Kitchen Nightmares was when Gordon started helping folks and their relationship troubles, which is what killed that show for me. Hell's Kitchen is just over the top ridiculous entertainment. I think from what I have seen in the promos from MasterChef it will be a mix of a serious cooking competition and Gordon actually being himself and not the over the top screamer we are used to. I'm looking forward to this show.

What Des said, based on how popular this seems with my Aussie/UK friends I'm giving it a whirl

Well, that was pretty fucking awful.

I'm a sucker for food competition shows, but the manufactured drama and reeallllly drawn out decisions were ridiculous. (What a coincidence that everyone who got a backstory all advanced!)

Ugh. I'll pass.

Were they picking the best food or the best side story? This was indeed a mess and you basically needed a family, tears or a decent backstory or fill the right age/race/gender/[fill in political correctness factor] quota to make the cut... How do you pick someone who can't get Mac and Cheese right?

And what was up with the half of the time critiquing the person right after tasting and the other half not 'giving it away' by walking to their seats first.

everything was too contrived, like the producers told them what to do before they walked in. It seemed like they all wanted to let the souther black lady with the mom's cookbook through but the skinny white judge just said no so that Gordon could get all dramatic.

What was the point of having them cook outside the room then cook in front of the judges?

Awesome - I saw it while I was in a bar, and based on that was enough for me to see the families in the background, and realise I'll most likely be deleting the season pass.

I don't understand the existence of this show.

When I saw that Asian guy (no way he's an amateur) do his thing, I kinda lost interest. I thought the whole idea here was to have a show about complete amateurs learning and competing. All I saw was a bunch of ringers -- the amateurs were few and far between.

And yeah, as others have said, the rigged competitions and crying jags are getting beyond farcical.

It seems to me that this show is almost identical to Hell's Kitchen. Why not just have another season of HK?

Makes me appreciate Top Chef that much more.

Aweful.

Gordon signed a very rich new contract with FOX a year or so ago, which gave him that Cookoff special last Christmas and this show in addition to Hell's Kitchen.

And yes, there will be another season of Hell's Kitchen in September.

It's just impossible to watch this show live.. It seemed like every 4-5 minutes, they cut to commercials!

I'll give this a chance.. Hoping that the pace picks up after the "auditions" are over with next week.

What I meant was why not give us another Kell's Kitchen (Summer Edition) iso this? If they're not going to use actual amateurs, this show is just a pale shadow of HK so why not just give us the real thing.

What are you talking about? Hell's Kitchen and this aired the same night. What do you mean another Hell's Kitchen?

Are you saying you want 2 editions running simultaneously? That makes no sense. I believe Gordon is working with a different set of Producers on MasterChef compared to Hell's Kitchen.

And as I said, there will be a Fall edition of Hell's Kitchen in September.

Definitely hoping it gets more interesting after the auditions. With the last guy ... pulling the family into the judging room ... was there any way that Gordon was going to look that fugly woman in the eyes and say ... you married a looooser? Evidently you can only completely make fun of hick-looking white guys and hot girls.

This show is terrible! And I don't think I'll be able to get enough of it.

The one Italian judge - you know, the mafia wannabe - was splitting my sides with his looks and faux intimidation. I kept expecting him to flash a glock kept in his jacket. So unbelieveably ridiculous.
