Programming upcoming movies & TV shows on your DVR?
I like to browse the listings on my DVR for movies on HBO, Showtime, Starz etc.
Usually you get about a weeks worth of listings and I do this while I watch another program live and if I see something I like I can just program it to record.
Is this safe to do or will the onscreen images and guide damage the TV screen or cause burn in especially since it takes about an hour to check all the channels?
Are there alternative methods?

Who is your TV provider? With DirecTV or TiVo, you can set shows to record online. I don't think burn in is a worry... it sounds like you've already spent lots of time in the menus. Have you noticed burn in? If you haven't, I'd say you are safe.

I have been doing it since around 2006 with Directv
I did not notice any problems until this year but then again I have a Sony and they were known for having bad optical engines in their LCD TVs and got sued and now my TV has blue lines that appear on the screen and they become more pronounced when I do a listings search.
I would be scared to death if I did this on a Plasma if I had one.

Since you have DirecTV, why not just get on your computer and set recordings online instead of through the onscreen guide?

In general, LCDs aren't prone to burn-in.

Yeah, according to what I've read on line, LED/LCD sets have no problem with burn-in. I'm looking at a Samsung, 65", LED 8000 series for my next set.
Plasma, direct-view CRT (anyone make those anymore?), and CRT projection will definately give you burn-in eventually. I've had a 65" HD projection TV for almost nine years and I can see little burned in patterns all over it at this point.
DLP I'm not sure about.

The bad optical blocks were in LCD and SXRD rear projection sets, not the LCD flat panels. Someone can correct me if I'm mistaken on that.
I can't buy a Sony again with the bad experience I had with their TV and Panasonic plasmas might have burn in the future and Samsung & LG are not that reliable and their products always have some kind of problem.
I had a upconverting dvd player from Samsung and it would never work right.
