Tina Fey to receive Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

She is awesome but is this kind of early for a lifetime achievement award?

"30 Rock" and "Saturday Night Live" actress Tina Fey is to receive the annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor -- one of nation's highest honors in the world of comedy, the Kennedy Center said on Tuesday.

Fey, whose popularity soared in 2008 with her impersonations of Republican vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin, will be presented the award on November 13 on a night of humor featuring other comic stars.

Fey is only the third woman to have won the honor in 13 years, after Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg.

The actress, 40, has already won six Emmys and two Golden Globes for her TV series "30 Rock", which she writes, produces and also stars in.

Before then, she spent nine seasons on the TV satirical sketch show "Saturday Night Live" and later branched into movies with "Mean Girls", "Baby Mama" and "Date Night".

It's not by definition a lifetime achievement award.

So according to this prize, the three definitive names in female comedy are Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg, and Tina Fey.

I fully agree with one of those.

I've never seen any of her films, though, as none of them have looked interesting to me (I did see a bit of Baby Mama on cable, but I won't bother to threadcrap here over it  ). I do, however, think that she's sexy as all hell....so if that's in the voting criteria, then hell yeah, give her an award. But I doubt that sexiness is part of the voting, judging by the past winners.

You've never watched 30 Rock? It's fantastic.

And Baby Mama was Tina cashing a check, that's all.

Yep, it might have been Neil Simon who won the award in 2006...depending on who you ask.

I love 30-Rock because it's an incredibly anti-formulaic sitcom.

I'm a Tina Fey fan, so this is good news.

Tina Fey is decent, but I would have to believe that Carol Burnett and Gilda Radner would have been better selections, in terms of female comedians.

I am all for this award and think it's well deserved.

It's the funniest show on TV, by far. Granted, I don't watch a lot of TV shows in general, but you should definitely check out this show and in order if possible. If you have Netflix I think the first 3 seasons are streaming there.

I'd imagine Gilda Radner's acceptance speech would be rather short.

Also...

Bea Arthur
Roseanne (yes, she's been irritating for well over a decade, but her pre-fame and early TV material was without a doubt, solid)

Betty White would seem to be a popular choice this year.

I don't think Betty White writes any of her own material or really ever has.

The Mark Twain Prize recognizes people whose work in comedy involves social commentary/observation or political satire, so adjust your recommendations of who deserves it instead of Tina Fey accordingly.

Fey is so overrated. I think she is funny, but she is one of these people in Hollywood that the press just loves EVERYTHING they do for some reason. She's still hot though :)

Trey Parker and Matt Stone should get it. Would they induct a duo?

Fey lives and works in New York

Any award for comedy that has been given to Whoopi Goldberg is disqualified of all merit in my book.

This list means nothing until Andrew Dice Clay gets his long overdue induction.
