American Idol Top 5, May 4/5, Frank Sinatra Week
It’s Frank Sinatra week, with Harry Connick Jr. being the mentor. An interesting twist this week is that for the first time the mentor (Connick) will arrange the songs and write the orchestrations. The orchestra includes nine string players, 13 brass and one drummer this week, and the contestants were not allowed to play an instrument themselves this week.
Here is the list of songs, in spoilers due to it’s length:
Spoiler:
Lady Gaga will perform the song "Alejandro" this week, which was recorded after last week's show due to the work involved in the set construction. Apparently American Idol gave her a lot of money to perform on the show.
Jordin Sparks will be on broadway soon, in "The Heights". Hopefully she has some success, she has a great voice.
In other news, here is the image for Norman Gentle’s new album:
which is a takeoff of Daughtry’s album cover:
Speaking of Daughtry, he and Jon Bon Jovi will perform on the May 12th show.

Aaron Kelly - A little ragged at the start, but he got into a nice groove for the rest of the performance.
Casey James - Ever hear a goat scoop a note? You did with Casey in his performance, but it wasn't terrible, it was middle-of-the-road. Maybe he should have taken the other gig with his bud.
Crystal Bowersox - Kinda like Aaron in that she didn't have much vocal bounce in the beginning, but she got rolling in the second half of the song, but it wasn't a great performance.
Michael Lynche - As long as I don't watch him perform, I think he did a good job with the song, but as soon as I saw him on the TV, all the smugness just came pouring through. Ack!
Lee DeWyze - He looked a little drunk while singing and moving around the stage. Kinda of a stacatto-like performance, but he still managed to fuse his style and the chairman's style.

I'm PRAYING that Michael Lynche goes home. He and his over-confident self will hopefully get the boot this week. He sings the same song every single week.

I really wish that the judges hadn't saved Michael Lynche a few weeks ago, but I agree that this should be his last week.

This season has not featured a lot of personality from the contestants, and that has made for a tepid response to the overall season, and to any of the individual contestants.
I think Lee is the one to beat now (of course, now that I've proclaim it, he'll be sent home tomorrow night).

Completely bored by last night. I'm tired of them being so pro-Lee too. Every week they act like they are so surprised at how great he is.

Wow, I love Frank Sinatra, but last night's Idol was tough to stay awake through. Crystal was good during the second half of her song, but the orchestra totally overpowered her. Lee was good, but still miles away from conveying the right phrasing and cadence of the song. I really don't care much about the others.

There is a huge disconnect between the judges always harping on the contestants to "be relevant" and then forcing them to sing big band standards or disco like last year or Frank Sinatra this season. The ratings are sinking because the contestants are boring as hell and the producers are ruining this show.

I voted for Crystal to get the boot in the poll.

The Harry Connick blooper reel was hilarious.
The Connick medley is making me think they should have performed his songs instead of the Sinatra songbook on Tuesday.

I thought he'd stick around for another week. Oh well.
It's coming down to a Crystal - Lee finale, the order that the others fall out is not that important. I wish Aaron Kelly luck in what he does in life, he seems like a good kid. And a very talented singer. I like him a lot better than David Archeleto (spelling?) from last year.

Glad to see Aaron gone, but I can't stand that they can't time these things out with like 10 seconds of padding so you can see them get a nice ovation instead of cutting away while they are singing.

I really thought Casey and Crystal would be the bottom two, with one going this week and the other next week, then Mike going, leaving Aaron and Lee the final two, since it seems the AI voters tend to favor bland white guys.

Outside of Harry Connick, this week on Idol was an unmitigated disaster. These kids couldn't sing these old standards if their lives depended on it. Absolutely no stage presence and no sense of timing/cadence.
IMO, this is the worst final-five in the history of Idol. And I predict that all of these talent-challenged contestants will fade to oblivion.
