The best thing about ensemble shows is that you can have characters leave, and new ones come in, and the quality can be maintained. "M*A*S*H" and "Cheers" are good examples.

(Oh, and Troy, you're misquoting Woody Allen in your sig. The line is "Don't knock masturbation.")
Well the show was a surprise and the quality was amazing for the first 3 seasons and then...well...at least we have 3 great seasons to watch on dvd.

I recently rewatched several episodes from the first few seasons on TV reruns and was surprised how different the show felt from what we see now. Michael is still a goofball, but much more understated than he is today. Jim and Pam's relationship is much more interesting and central to the show. Even supporting characters like Kelly and Angela are more understated and the humor is drier. I do miss that feel to the show.

Me, too. Gervais has always been clear about the fact that while people call him brilliant in the David Brent role, he feels his success is something that he fell into. He's also not caught completely up in the fame--he's felt if he can make money by doing nothing (ie syndication), why work hard trying to make a bigger name for himself? He has more than enough, is happy and doing what he enjoys. Why make life hard again?

'The Office' going to China
Ricky Gervais posts news on his blog
Aug 13, 2010, 09:50 AM ET

Ricky Gervais is about to start on a Chinese version of "The Office."

"We are about to start work on developing a Chinese "The Office,"" the comedian wrote on his blog Thursday, the New York Post reported.

Gervais played a key role in the success of the U.S. adaptation of "The Office," on which he is a producer. The NBC hit's seventh season starts on Sept. 23.

Gervais a few days ago also shot down rumors that he could replace Steve Carell, who has said he would leave the show after this coming season.

Ok there's the opening to sending Michael Scott off the show.. he has to go to China!

Not really news per se, but Paul Lieberstein says who he'd like as Michael Scott's replacement.

Eureka! It came to me in a dream. I was watching a future episode of "The Office" and Dunder Mifflin's new manager was played by Tim Allen. He has said he'd like to return to TV. What do you think?

TV Guide:
Entertainment Weekly reports, based on unnamed sources, that Tim Allen, the 57-year-old standup star who parleyed his act into the ABC hit Home Improvement, is taking "a few select meetings" with writer-producers — one of whom may include Greg Daniels, the executive producer of Parks and Recreation and The Office.

I think Dunder Mifflin could really use Bill Lumbergh after Michael leaves.

I was never a fan of Home Improvement, but I don't have any issues with Allen. Why not do a series of guest stints and see who fits the best?

That's actually a very good idea. But, no matter who they choose some people are still going to hate the choice regardless.

She has a midseason show on NBC. I believe she will appear in a few episodes this season and that's it.
