"The Wire" coming to DirecTV's 101 in July

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global...setId=P6760108
In a continued effort to provide subscribers with the most distinctive and exclusive programming experience, DIRECTV'S The 101® Network will premiere one of television's most heralded series, The Wire, on Sunday, July 18, 2010. Never before available in HD, all five seasons (60 episodes) of The Wire will air uncut and commercial free for the first time since its run on HBO®, compliments of DIRECTV.

"Thought provoking, powerful series like The Wire are few and far between. By adding The Wire to our Sunday night lineup, we are further cementing The 101® Network's reputation as a destination for the most highly acclaimed dramas on television," said Patty Ishimoto, vice president and general manager of DIRECTV's The 101® Network. "We are confident that our customers will be captivated by the amazing storytelling in this series, which has been widely regarded as one of the top programs of the decade."

Set in the city of Baltimore, the Peabody Award-winning series is a brilliant portrayal of the decaying infrastructure of American urban life. With each season focusing on a different facet of the city (the drug trade, the port, city government and bureaucracy, the school system and the print news media), The Wire is an uncommonly deep exploration of sociopolitical themes, examining the effect these institutions have on the inhabitants of the city.

The first season of the series focused on the often-futile efforts of the police to infiltrate a West Baltimore drug ring run by the Barksdale family. Seasons two and three followed the plight of the blue-collar urban working class as exemplified in the city port, leading to the escalation of the Barksdale investigation and the resultant pressures it placed on the city's political leadership. Season four shifted focus to the city's public school system and the struggles students face at home and on the street corner. The fifth and final season of The Wire centered on the media's role in addressing — or failing to address — the fundamental political, economic and social realities depicted throughout the course of the series.
If you've never seen this great show, now's your chance (well, if you have DirecTV)!

Hmmm HD. Wonder what the aspect ratio will be. The entire run was 4:3.

IIRC, it was never shot in HD. I'm sure it will still be 4:3.

Pretty sure it was shot on film so I supposed it would benefit from HD. Something tells me with the blurb about the first time in HD, it will be 1.78. We'll see if it's cropped or opened at the sides if that's the case.

They cropped Oz so I suspect they'll do the same for this show.

Told Michael B. Jordan (he plays Wallace) how great he was in The Wire (and FNL) during a Friday Night Lights filming day. Excited about re-watching the best show ever made! I wonder if people will still hate on season 2...even though I thought it was very compelling.

My brother is doing so right now. We just finished episode 9 of season 2. I had to force him to watch the first episode now he can't stop.

Can anyone confirm how they handled the HD?

Re: "The Wire" coming to DirecTV's 101 in July

Last week, I watched season 1 for the first time. I think it seems slow for the first couple episodes because we don't know the characters yet. The first season is one 13 hour episode. It would be cool if they would design DVD / Bluray to have a continuous option (sans titles & credits), but that would probably conflict with union regulations.

BTW it was awesome.

It didn't really have an HD-look to it. It felt more like a SD show stretched to widescreen.

Weird, I know I havent watched this show before, but I remembered everything that took place when I watched the pilot earlier? And episode 2 looks familiar as well.... Weird... haha

I dunno. Some of the episode conclusions would seem weaker without the closing credits whopping you on the head. There were many, many "DAMN!" moments in this series. I'll take it as is, thank you very much!

I thought the HD transfer looked great. It's definitely sharper but retains the gritty feel. I would absolutely KILL to have this on Blu-Ray.

Best. Show. EVER.

While I thought it was the weakest season of The Wire, it was still wonderful television. Better than the best season of The Sopranos, in my opinion.

Season 2 is my favorite season, people completely misunderstand the brilliance of what was accomplished during those episodes.
