This episode felt really short to me and seemed to end just as it was getting good.

Not including closing credits, but that includes nearly 5 minutes of "Previously" and opening credits, not to mention over 2 minutes of opening narration/interviews. The opening isn't filler, but still, credits to credits is only 42 minutes.

I didn't like that they filmed the beach scene almost identically to the Normandy scene in SPR. Mazzello loses his helmet and all the audio drops off... I was like are you frickin' kidding me. Not bad.. just try to be different next time Mr. Director.

Given Hanks's track record -- make a movie based on a historical chapter in American history with an A-list director, then work with that director to do an HBO miniseries based on that same chapter in history -- the smart money is a Hanks/Levinson series on our post-Civil War westward expansion, based on the upcoming Boone's Lick.

That would be cool too. I'd love to see a Civil War series of the same quality as Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

What a hell. I cannot even imagine how horrendous something like that would be.

Indeed, I noticed that too. I think that's a really great effect, but yes, that's another one of those circumstances in which you can definitely see Speilberg's involvement.

Great episode though, I love those beach landings that are so intense.

Taking parts from dead Japanese soldiers was more common then one would have thunk.

I remember reading about a huge uproar after Life magazine published a photo of a woman with a Japanese skull that was sent to her by her boyfriend. The JAG even had to issue a memorandum telling everyone to stop the practice because it violated the Geneva Convention.

Read Sledge's memoir. He says most of the time the marines didnt even wait til the jap was dead before they cut out his teeth.

With any luck, that technique will be retired- if Ben Stiller does it in TROPIC THUNDER, it has overstayed its welcome.
