The 1990s show had the same characters as the movie... so that twerp on the right was the chronic masterbater kid.

I liked it, though some of the scenes where they were trying to create drama just felt weird.

Re: Parenthood -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 03/02/10

For me, the actors are too identified with prior characters and weren't really able to create new ones here. i spent the show thinking "hey, its nate fisher....hey its lorelei, hey its the guy who shows his cock on Punk'd, hey it's swimfan, hey, its egg..."

i will be giving it time to get better, but for the genre i much prefer "life unexpected" so far.

disclaimer, i don't watch brothers and sisters, so no idea how it compares to that.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought it would. That was a hell of a lot of commercials for "limited commercial interruptions" though.

I disagree -- never in the entire run of The Gilmore Girls could I picture Lorelei (or Rory for that matter) having sex. Even when she was shown in bed with a man, I couldn't imagine her moaning, "Oh, yeah, Christopher, ride me like Fatty Arbuckle." The moment we saw her on the couch with the barista, I was able to say, "Okay, this is an entirely different character from Lorelei Gilmore."

Re: Parenthood -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 03/02/10

I really really enjoyed the series. I liked that since the actors are all playing similar, but different characters in the family scenes I feel like I've known these characters for years, which really helps add a nostalgia factor to the series. But really I enjoyed tonight's pilot more than most TV I've watched this season sans "Life Unexpected"

I thought the same thing.

Very good pilot mainly because of the acting and a good setup for all the characters. The indie pop over almost every scene has to go though. This isn't a Shonda Rhimes vehicle. I'm still not sold on Christensen being a good actress either. She's easily the least talented of the older family.

"THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY SON!"

In the fucking rain, no less.

That was a bit much.

I'll give it a few episodes to find its legs.

Re: Parenthood -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 03/02/10

I was wondering how the show has an all white cast...until the dude who is banging Kristen Bell (Dax) 'old' fling showed up and I yelled "he has a kid!" and BOOM, we get a new cast member who is not white. And no gay son/daughter? Huh?

Pilot was pretty meh. Way too forced.

3.1 last night...ouch. After all the promotions a 3.1 is not that great.

Same here. I was expecting a little more humor. I'll stick around cause I like the cast and the creative team.

Keep in mind that the majority of the pilot was written and produced with a much different actress in mind for Lauren Graham's character and so the show will be evolving over the next couple of episodes as the writing team gets more used to their current cast and their strengths.

I did think that Lauren Graham was not right for some of her lines. She was much too attractive for some of the comments she made in her tirade to her sister during the date.

Perhaps i am in the minority, i could easily picture Lorelei getting railed by Luke, hard and often. When she changed from flats to the Lorelei boots for the date, it felt like old times. I will concede that something decidedly unLorelei like was her lunging at Egg in the beginning.

After sleeping on it, i think my problem with the show was it being too "pilot-like", and having to establish character roles in a ham fisted way. Oh look, Egg is "rebellious" because she is taking out a pack of smokes in her room, and got caught with "weed". Too many things felt like they were visually "telling" instead of "showing."

Will i keep watching anyway, on the basis of lauren graham? Damn straight.

Someone needs to explain 'Egg' to me.

The rebel daughter played a character on Arrested Development (very minor spoiler ahead, but I figure better safe than sorry)
Spoiler:
named Ann that was dating the son of the main character. She was so bland that the main character kept forgetting who she was and at one point thought her name was Egg.

thought the show sucked and added nothing new to primetime dramas.

I liked it a lot.
And great casting. The kids actually look like their parents.

Are you kidding? 3.1 is awesome considering what an awful season NBC is having. Chuck is hovering around a 2.4 and that's considered good for that show.

Re: Parenthood -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 03/02/10

I liked this alot. It was a very good setup for all the characters. I think Lauren Graham played the Sarah character very well. It would be hard for me seeing the character have such a light and fun tone under Maura Tierney. I thought the overall tone of the show was very light hearted which I enjoyed. I've always thought that Peter Krause was a good lead actor and I think Adam is a good character for him. Much better than Nick on DSM.

I did like her interactions with the Barista at the Chinese restaurant and what happened afterwards eve though they were so not compatible.

The character that I'm not quite sold on is Julia (Erika Christensen) I'm just not really buying her as a career woman and loving wife and mother. I'll give her time though.

It's hard to believe that 20+ years have passed since I saw Bonnie Bedelia play Mrs. John McLane and now she's playing a grandmother.

Not after all the promotions it had during the Olympics and having literally no competition in it's timeslot (plus it had TBL as it's lead-in). You know it's going to drop in the coming weeks (I'd say a 2.6 next week and eventually settling in the low 2's) and the cast is far more expensive vs. Chuck.

From TVBytheNumbers.com:
Two weeks off for Biggest Loser didn’t do it any good, as it fell 11% to a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating. Did that end up hurting the premiere of Parenthood? Perhaps. Needless to say, even though Parenthood won the 10pm ratings battle, with all the Olympic promotion, the fact that it debuted with the same 18-49 ratings as Southland and My Own Worst Enemy last season is not cheery. And shouldn’t the retentionistas (you know who you are!) be crowing about Parenthood? It held 94% of Biggest Loser’s last half hour. That’s a win, right? Silly retentionistas.
10:00 NBC Parenthood (premiere) 3.1 8 8.235
CBS The Good Wife 2.7 7 13.465
ABC 20/20: Before They Were Stars 2.1 6 6.011

10:30 NBC Parenthood (premiere) 3.1 9 7.914
CBS The Good Wife 2.6 8 13.114
ABC 20/20: Before They Were Stars 1.5 4 4.834
Coming up, it'll go against (I think), V at the end of March.

Re: Parenthood -- New Series -- "Pilot" -- 03/02/10

Problem for me was there were far too many forced scenes. I heard the second episode is good, and it's not like there is much anything else so I'll keep the DVR pass for it.
