Big Love #41 "Blood Atonement" - 2/21/10

Final third of the season now. Should be an exciting home stretch. Between the election, kidnapping and out-of-wedlock baby, things are getting interesting.

Plot Preview :
Spoiler:
Bill and Joey make an emergency trip to Mexico.

Re: Big Love #41 "Blood Atonement" - 2/21/10

Why do the writers insist on making Margene a complete moron?
Spoiler:
Marrying another man?
Also, they have Nikki
Spoiler:
Go see JJ's son about her infertility?
I've been watching the show from the beginning and it always had great, logical writing. This season seems like it has taken a turn towards novella.

I did love Lois goin' all Obi Wan on Hollis though. lol

"Don't leave us alone with Mrs. Petrovic"

You could see the thing with Margene coming a mile away. Nikki was right when she called her out on doing this more for her business than to help Bill

Lois chopping off Hollis' arm was awesome

I was waiting for Bill or Joey to go Rambo at the Greene's compound, but Lois cutting off the arm was even better! Though I do find it hard to believe she's actually have the strength to do that!

Re: Big Love #41 "Blood Atonement" - 2/21/10

Lois Obi-Wanning Hollis was pretty hard to believe, but funny. I like Selma having to choose saving Hollis or killing the Hendricksons. Surely someone on the compound would have pointed out that they had the time and manpower to easily do both.

Don't know what JJ did to Adele (besides the obvious) to get her pregnant, but clearly Wanda knows something about her brother and it's nothing good. JJ was loading "sensitive instruments" onto the truck, so that nuclear theory is still in play.

I doubt Bill will be too pleased with Margene next episode. This certainly won't go well for anyone involved, I think.

Still trying to grasp Marilyn's con. I get that she uses Reed to rile up people so that she can seem like a hero when they calm back down, but what's her game with not talking to Barb after the bomb was discovered? That just makes everyone hate her and want to get rid of her. Am I missing something?

She already got what she wanted from them, they signed her up to a contract. Shes probably moved on to the next mark. I assume in time Reed will call off the dogs and Marilyn can swoop in and take credit.

I'm sure Bill will have a dandy of an "I told you so" speech ready for Barb concerning Marilyn.

See Jack Abramoff.

The Jack Abramoff Indian lobbying scandal is a United States political scandal relating to the work performed by political lobbyists Jack Abramoff, Ralph E. Reed, Jr., Grover Norquist and Michael Scanlon on Indian casino gambling interests for an estimated $85 million in fees. Abramoff and Scanlon grossly overbilled their clients, secretly splitting the multimillion-dollar profits. In one case, they secretly orchestrated lobbying against their own clients in order to force them to pay for lobbying services.
It's worth noting, Abramoff is currently incarcerated.

I'm curious to see what JJ has out in Kansas- my guess is a large scale meth lab.

I'm completely baffled as to what JJ's up to. Sometimes I don't even think the writers themselves know yet.

Some kind of in-vetro scheme? Maybe he's creating a mormon-zombie army of children?

That made me never want to go there. And the music was all over the place in this episode. There was one in Mexico where the music sounded like it belonged in the Twilight Zone.

Completely. The writing for this entire season is out the fucking window. And it's really irritating as I've always looked at Big Love to be a really strong and well written show. Usually TONS going on, but everything tying together and making sense in the end. Nothing makes any sense this season.

Seriously. They contemplated what to do longer than it would've taken them to unload bullets into the 5 people standing there. Horribly written IMO.

I gotta agree guys. I felt the last 3 episodes were quickly moving the show back toward its previous greatness but this episode derailed all the momentum they had built up.

I too have no desire to visit Mexico after that -- although they are clearly in badlands territory.

I was curious as to how Bill was able to get into the complex after Hollis overheard his call? Was it because everyone was at the party for mommy!

Selma freaks me out!

Yes. He knew that Bill was on his way, so he moved the "trial" up, then agreed to hold off on it for Ben's "appeal" and continue with the party even though an hour ago he moved everything up immediately because Bill was on the way. Oh and also he didn't have them guarded while they were locked up even though he knew Bill was on the way.

All clear? Makes sense right?

I also didn't get why Hollis didn't have his security waiting for Bill since, you know, he knew when Bill would arrive and even indicated that he'd have security waiting.

The whole stand-off was really awkward. If it wasn't for Hollis' arm being chopped off, it'd be a total waste. Anyone else think Lois cut through that arm too easily? I get that it's a sharp machete, but her follow-through seemed too weak to cut through an arm so easily.

Weird episode. The show already had it's fair share of storylines already, but now they've added even more. There may be too much stuff going and things seem to be rushed.

No Sarah this episode.

Well to be fair she was doing it while held at gunpoint. Oh wait, that doesn't make any goddamn sense. Exactly.

Re: Big Love #41 "Blood Atonement" - 2/21/10

The criticisms about how the writers did the compound scenes have actually been kind here.

Watching a 2nd time, there were so many things that just were stupid and unbelievable about that, it really took away from all the momentum of the previous episodes where it seemed like they were back in fine form.

So many things are happening to so many characters that it's almost like the LOST issue of people not even asking just the basic questions you'd assume they'd ask.

When Barb said her inbox was full (or something like that), I was thinking that really applied to most of the cast and especially Bill. Does he ever get a moment to relax?

Oh, and I went to Mexico about 10 years ago. Can't imagine things are better. Flew to Acapulco and we drove north to Zihuatanejo. We were told, other than the dangers of driving on the roads in Mexico, that it was a safe trip. Just outside of Acapulco we ran into 4 masked men with AK-47s who blocked traffic going both ways. Again, this was literally right outside of Acapulco and they asked us for money. We told them we were going to a resort and only had plastic (which was a lie). They didn't force us out to check, but looked around the car and spotted all of our bottled water in the back and ordered us to give it up. We did and they let us move on.

So, I'd say wherever Bill might have been, it's probably as dangerous as they made it out to be.

Re: Big Love #41 "Blood Atonement" - 2/21/10

All the women are changing in one way or another but I'm fascinated with Nikki this season. She's obviously going through some changes due to the timely realization that the way she was raised on the compound was fucked up. I mean she's still, "Nicole/Nikki", but it seems like she's going down a less selfish path in life. I guess we'll see how this pans out....

Re: Big Love #41 "Blood Atonement" - 2/21/10

Forgot to ask earlier... did anyone else at the time think that Hollis/Selma staged Mexican Perez Hilton's murder? I didn't understand why he was killed out of view from everyone, so I suspected it was faked. I guess it wasn't.

I hope by the end of the series Margene divorces Bill/Barb/Nikki.
Barb was already married to Bill when he convinced her about the principle. Nikki was brought up in that lifestyle, so she expected it (although we dont know how much of it was voluntary and how much was forced). Margene however was young and naive and had issues with her family, so I'm sure she was vulnerable enough to be seduced into it (easy target for cults).
It feels like Margene is starting to lose faith in the principle and is rethinking the whole thing.
