Re: Friday Night Lights -- "Laboring" -- 02/03/10
I read somewhere that Katims talked about the possibility of Seasons 4-5 of FNL encompassing one football season. Season 1 was 22 episodes long, and I'm sure season 2 would have been 22 episodes had not the writers' strike occurred. Of course, this season is certainly not season 1 in terms of moving a storyline effectively.

Love this show, but after a while it gets a bit laughable how things ALWAYS go wrong for the Taylors.
It's particularly stupid how everybody at West Dillon despises Eric...there would be a few stuck-up parents, and maybe a couple players, but the vast majority would appreciate him as a good guy who does the right thing and is a good teacher and role model.

Yeah if it weren't for the birth, I may have just killed myself after watching that one. Pretty depressing.
Coach and the Lions being screwed over big time. Tami getting harassed. Luke hobbling around with the bad hip. Landry being stood-up. Julie being a bratty high school kid. Vince's buddy's funeral and the subsequent payback scenes. The one chick being turned down by Tim once again. The Riggins boys in jail.

In a way it does make sense to make season 4/5 1 school year. For starters, It keeps Aimee Teagarden and Jesse Plemons on the show longer since their characters are Seniors. Also, it's been mentioned that Season 5 will almost certainly be the final season.

So did the Becky rat Riggins out? I think so because she was highly suspcious in the last episode, and then in this episode she blurted out "I love you, Tim" and he gave his "We can't do this" line and walked away. Ouch.

I think it's more likely that Tim buying that land with a bag of cash raised some eyebrows.

Or maybe the junkyard guy who warned Tim and said he wouldn't take any more cars from them dimed them out when the cops put pressure on him.

Not to get too realistic about it, but a town like Dillon would have a local police force that might be a bit yokel-ish; however, there would also be a County Sheriff's Dept, which would be run pretty damn professionally --with detectives and everything.

Thought the episode was great. Yeah, it was a downer, but we are approaching the end of season and tension has to build before they can resolve it. At least they didn't show the thug park. I like the complex triangle between Vince, Jesse & Landry. Poor Landry.

I thought this was a great episode. The crazy back and forth rivalry stuff with East and West Dillon was great and from a dramatic standpoint, the storyline with Vince, Jess and Landry was very powerful.
I know most of you hate dark/depressing episodes, but I think the writers have done a good job integrating this into this season. Vince is such a complex character and I think his back story is one of the best storylines this season and Michael B. Jordan deserves major props for his performances.
Also, I think they have done a good job this season balancing football with drama unlike season 2. You also have to take into consideration that Jason Katims has a 2nd job working on Parenthood and it must have been a pain in the ass for him to fly back and forth from Austin and LA to oversee the writing and production of 2 shows simultaneously.
I also think it's good that:

I read that Adrianne Palicki was not available to shoot any episodes this season after initially commiting to 1 episode, which I assume was supposed to be this season.
But, didn't anyone find it odd that Tyra was not even mentioned, especially with her sister Mindy having a baby. At least they could have had a fake phone call or have her Mom mention that she couldn't make it out of Austin.
