24: Jack back for Season 9...?

This seems a bit presumptuous of the FOX execs considering there have only been is a couple episodes aired from season 8, but...

LOS ANGELES — Kiefer Sutherland had been under the working assumption that Season Eight of his hit series 24 would be his last.

“It’s my last time as Jack Bauer, let me enjoy it,” he’d quip to colleagues last summer and fall while shooting the new episodes, which began airing again last week.

But, now 24 is back and looking as good as ever, talks are hurriedly being scheduled for a ninth season; and it seems a good bet Sutherland’s now-iconic role won’t be put to rest just yet.

A source very close to the Canadian-reared actor said these are the reasons Sutherland was so sure the clock had struck midnight for his beloved character:

Firstly, his contract with 20th Century Fox didn’t extend beyond Season Eight. Secondly, and more importantly, network execs were still steaming over Sutherland’s erratic behaviour while shooting Season Seven.

There were public drunken incidents, including the head-butting assault of a fellow Sutherland believed was trying to pick up pal Brooke Shields. Worse, perhaps, was Sutherland’s arrest for drunk driving (his fourth since 1989), which put him behind bars for 48 days, cost Fox millions in lost production days and “tarnished” the show’s reputation.

“He was in mourning, he knew he messed up. He realized playing a character like Jack Bauer is a gift that rarely happens to actors. The only reason he’s back for Season Eight was his contract, but he thought, ‘well, it’s been a good run and I guess this is it’, ” said the source.

However, as I reported months ago, Sutherland’s comportment during this season’s filming has been stellar.

The contrite 43-year-old son of the legendary Donald Sutherland — still in mandated alcohol counselling as part of his probation — only drinks on his days off and has stayed clear of trouble.

You can see the effects in the first episodes of Season 8 — Jack Bauer is trim, sharp and exciting. Indeed, one TV reviewer called him a “super hero” without the cape.

Fox execs have duly noticed.

Honcho Kevin Reilly said formal talks for Day 9 will start in about two weeks, and will include extending Sutherland’s contract for at least one more season. “My sense is that Kiefer will want to keep it going,” he said.

Sutherland also said on the record he’s “absolutely open” for a ninth season. Friends say “absolutely open” is an understatement. Said one: “He is Jack Bauer. The character has become crucial to his life.”
While I've really enjoyed the show so far this season, I do think it's run it's course. I guess I'd watch another, but if it were canceled, I wouldn't be crying...

I kinda hope they wrap it all up with the constantly proposed theatrical movie.

FOX will need to bust out lots of $$$$$. He makes roughly $550K per episode. I think if he re-signs for 1 more year, it's going to jump between $600-700K per episode.

It says "Canadian-reared" so I think he only grew up there. It would be rather funny and cool if in the show they revealed Jack, saviour of America, to be Canadian.

Kiefer was born in the UK, but moved to Canada as a kid. Donald Sutherland and his mother are both Canadian.

All I need is Renee. Jack could sit next season out as long as she's cuttin' off fingers and shit.

I fought they were priming Agent Ortiz (Freddy Prinze Jr) as the "New Jack" of Season 9?

I'm not sure why this rumor starts about every new young "sidekick" they introduce. "Gee whiz, Mr. Bauer...what are we gonna do now?"

Probably the only character they've every had who could replace Jack successfully would be Renee.

That's what I assumed, but looking at the first 4 hours, maybe it's Renee who's the next star of this show once Jack takes off

I think Ortiz seems more likely to be a new Tony. Renee is easily a new Jack.

Yes, Doyle was a character from season 6 played by him.

I really liked Chase from several seasons ago (Jack's sidekick and Kim's boyfriend). Unfortunately, I think he lost one of his appendages, too...
