Genre: Drama
Ignoring pleas from Nicki to become Juniper Creek's next prophet, Bill contemplates running for the vacant Utah State Senate seat against an ardent polygamy foe, Roy Coburn. Joey and Wanda return to Juniper Creek, but a suspicious J.J. is lurking. Sarah and Scott decide to forgo a wedding in Bill's church in favor of a civil ceremony, shocking Barb, who nevertheless takes steps with Bill to be re-admitted to the church that excommunicated them. J.J., making his mark in a UEB satellite compound in Kansas, has a contentious dinner at the Henrickson's with his cancer-ridden wife Malinda. Margene confronts Nicki about her feelings for Ray Henry, who's moving away after losing his case. A reform-minded Dale tries to keep Alby at bay, to little avail. (TVMA) (AC,AL)

Detailed Synopsis of Episode 35 "Free At Last"

Spoiler:
This Week on Big Love

Written by Mark V. Olsen & Will Scheffer
Directed by Dan Attias

Bill is building his new church with his family and (what's left of) Don's, while the Henricksons prepare for the casino opening. Their casino partners, Jerry Flute and his son Tommy, are not pleased that they are under scrutiny by the Feds because of their business relationship with Bill - apparently he's not "the sunny face of polygamy" after all. Bill insists he's clean (and goes to Ray at the DA's office to demand he back off his investigation of his family.) When he tries to go over his head to State Senator Hayes, Bill learns Hayes died suddenly.

The Feds raid Juniper Creek in search of Roman Grant who's been missing for six weeks. They also confront Nicki when they discover "Roman" has been depositing checks into an account in her name, raising the Henricksons' suspicions about her once again. "I'm not blind. I see it in your eyes," Nicki says. Frustrated with Barb, Margene and Bill's lingering doubts, she throws herself into the task of assimilating her estranged daughter Cara Lynn into the family.

Barb is stretched between her increased role at the casino and concerns about her family - most urgently where Sara and Scott will decide to be married. Meanwhile, Bill and Barb are unaware that Ben is helping his grandmother Lois with her new parrot smuggling business. To get Frank (who is still seeking vengeance for Lois's attempt on his life) off her back, she makes him an offer he can't refuse: "Will you let me live in peace for a percentage of a neat little business I got going?"

Though Margene is "blossoming" she is also feeling the pressure of her home-shopping jewelry business, plus family obligations to home and casino.

Alby meets a traveling businessman in the park while birdwatching and they hook up in the woods. Both are stunned when their paths cross again when Bill introduces them: The businessman (Dale), is actually the attorney who's been assigned to be Trustee of the UEB in Roman's absence. Alby speaks out against the trusteeship, accusing Bill of being the mastermind behind it and the raids. He believes Bill wants to be Prophet. "I have no taste for Prophets," Bill insists.

JJ shows up at Nicki's to fetch Cara Lynn but Nicki insists their daughter stay with her and go to school; she believes JJ is trying to place her in the Joy Book. Bill brokers a deal in which Cara Lynn stays with them during the week and with JJ on the weekends.

Nicki responds to Adaleen's panicked plea for a generator to save the contents of her meat locker when the power goes out, only to discover that her mother has been hiding Roman's frozen body there for the past six weeks. Adaleen insists she found him dead and wanted to protect the Prophet's legacy, there was no foul play on her part. Furious, Nicki demands that Alby announce Roman's death. Instead, Alby and Lura drive him to the desert and dump him in a pit on the casino grounds to cause trouble for Bill. When Bill gets the heads up about the body, he, Barb and Margene try to protect Nicki and are annoyed to discover she already knew her father was dead. Bill runs off with Barb and Margene to deal with an anonymous tip that Roman Grant is at the casino, leaving Nicki behind - who tries to bury Roman herself.

In spite of Alby's attempted sabotage, the casino opening is a success under Barb and Margene's direction - including getting Ben's band to cover for a delayed Kenny Rogers - and Bill and Nicki arrive in time to celebrate the take. Bill leads them in prayer: "Tonight we share a new beginning. Born of struggle, which makes it sweeter still."

Opposite the Two Hour 24 Premiere and the Golden Globes. I wait through months of unwatchable TV, and now this?
I'll probably watch 24 and catch up on this later in the week so I don't fill up my HD with four hours of 24 to watch later. I'll chime back in once I get a chance to watch this episode -- Normally I'd say "Can't Wait!" , but this time I'l say "Have to wait."

I don't know about this season so far, I'm really not feeling it and I've loved this show since the beginning. There are only 7 episodes left...

I didn't get it. So Bill is not going to try to be the new prophet? He's still going for the state Senate seat? Seemed like he made a big deal about not running and then he decided to run anyway?

I cracked up at Margie making her case for him not running while they are having sex

This ep seemed to be more about setting things up for the rest of the season.

The actor who plays Joey looked odd to me. Did he have some plastic surgery or something during the off season? For a moment I wasn't even sure it was the same actor.

I'm glad Sarah didn't exclude her parents from the wedding. Also I know we're only episodes in but where is Chakotay's wife she usually loitering around?

I think what changed his mind was what Sarah said to him. She stated that she tried to hide the wedding because she didn't know how to have her own beliefs, and that she was tired of hiding who she was. This sparked Bill to come to realize that it's time for his family to stop hiding and to use this new role to put a positive face on the principle.

I noticed Joey looked different as well. He came across as a more confident character, but it looks like his hair is shorter and styled a bit different too.

When they marry off a character, that's usually a sign that we'll be seeing less of that character. Sarah will probably be used sparingly this season.

Although it's only one episode, Aaron Paul's "Scott" character used to have an educated/book-smart look (maybe it was the glasses) - but now he looks more like his Breaking Bad character "Jesse" (minus the extremely baggy clothes).

I don't get how Alby could show up to that "Gays Anonymous" meeting and makeout with that lawyer while at the same time expecting to be the next Prophet. I figured if he's going to do the "gay thing" he'd try very hard to keep it on the DL or he risks his chances as Prophet.

Not sure I'm thrilled about this whole "running for office" angle, but we'll see. I think Alby's doing a nice job filling the creepy, er, hole now that Roman's gone (though I still miss his character).

I noticed the same thing. Scott was more clean-cut last season, now I just saw him as Jesse. (This could be a very scary and funny crossover )

The whole Bill running for office thing is kinda dumb. If he wins and then comes out with his two other families, the public would just demand a special election to get rid of him.

1 - He's a state senator, would anyone care?

2 - You assume they can legally do this in Utah

It's an odd direction to go in, but at least the wives recognise that. We'll see where this is headed. I liked this episode more than the first, but it still felt like a plot-set-up. Apparently, the Hendricksons patched things up with Barb's sister and her husband since not taking their calls last episode.

Sarah edged past Margine in the hotness sweepstakes this episode -- she looked amazing (her skin has finally cleared up -- nothing beats staring at dinner plate-sized blemishes on the big screen in Mama Mia).

Any theories of why J.J. doesn't have fingernails? Is it possibly something Nikki did to him? Some illness?

If you know from reading spoilers, please don't share that

Him with no hair and fingernails, his wife with cancer...maybe he's building dirty bombs in Kansas?

Wow. I like that one. Good thinking.

What's the big secret he's sharing with his sister Wanda (or is it Ronda? Joey's wife, anyway). It couldn't be another kid could it?

I felt full sure that Joey was coming back to become the prophet, he certainly did look a lot more confident, and at ease.

No doubt because of Roman's death. Which is a good thing. This show hits me right on all the emotional spots. When Bill brought out Sara at the end for the wedding, I was welling up.

I loved Margene passing off how much money she made, and then when she told bill, she was letting him know there would have to be some changes.

Yeah, I can't put my finger on it, but I'm not feeling this season so far yet. Usually this show had me riveted, but now? I'm just kind of watching.

Wanda = Joey's murderous wife
Rhonda = The freaky girl/Roman's wife-to be who ran from Juniper Creek in season 2.

Yeah, I always get those two names mixed up. Also, I need to check the definition, but I don't think Wanda can be murderous if she never actually murdered anyone, despite several attempts. Will look it up to be sure.

edit:
mur⋅der⋅ous
/ˈmɜrdərəs/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [mur-der-uhs] Show IPA

–adjective
1. of the nature of or involving murder: a murderous deed.
2. guilty of, bent on, or capable of murder.
3. extremely difficult, dangerous, or unpleasant: murderous heat.

So since she's both bent on murder and clearly capable of it, I guess she is indeed murderous. I stand corrected.

Same here.

I did love the digging around and questioning of Margene's profits and her response to it.

I think the first two episodes have been good. It has been kind of slow, IMO.

I think part of the probelm is trying to get us caught up on all the story lines. Juniper Creek, Joey, JJ, the trial, Casino, Bill's Parents, Sarah's wedding etc etc.

The heart and soul of the show are Bill ,his family and their daily interactions with each other. With so many irons in the fire they have largely gone away from that so far.
