Flash Forward -- "Playing Cards with Coyote" -- 11/12/09

Flash Forward

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

The discovery of the tattooed assassin seen in Mark's flash-forward leads him to cut short his romantic getaway with Olivia; Simon and Lloyd settle a debate over a game of poker; Aaron learns the truth about his daughter's accident; Janis returns to work, but questions her future with the department.

The show seemed to gain alot of momentum after last week's episode. Hopefully it continues this week.

Jesus christ. Why do shows continue to show poker and do it totally wrong! Arrrrgggg

Ricky Jay! So, I'm assuming the tattoos are Jericho related and that's who was in the office with the guns.

Re: Flash Forward -- "Playing Cards with Coyote" -- 11/12/09

By far my least favorite episode so far.

Oh, my god! More than 1 person with the same tattoo. I never considered that for a second. What a mindblower!

And that guy at the end must be a real badass because he killed someone while saying something clever and showed no remorse or hesitation.

Crap episode.

edit: And why did they have their sleeves rolled up in the pouring rain? WHY?

I'm quickly losing interest in this show. Tonight's episode was just boring. The whole tattoo thing was also dumb. Obviously more than one person could have the same tattoo! They're FBI agents for christ sake!! You'd think that they would have at least considered that possibility...

Yea, I wasn't surprised by the multiple tattoo situation. I was actually confused when Mark said he changed his future. I was thinking, why the hell would killing one tattoo guy change your future???

Initially, I thought the show implied that there were multiple tattooed assailants roaming around, not just one like Mark thought.

Dumb.

This was pretty terrible; I don't care that Fiennes and his wife might get divorced, or any other stupid story line that is taking forever to progress. The fact that the suicide nurse guy is still doodling on some picture that I thought he finished last week is a microcosm of how poorly the entire show has progressed.

Re: Flash Forward -- "Playing Cards with Coyote" -- 11/12/09

Yeah I gotta agree that the show is fast losing its appeal. I don't think I've seen a show have such a build up and great opening episode to nosedive so fast.

Are they going thru a change in writers? Were they hoping to do enough to get picked up for the full season before picking up the storyline a little.

This show has gone up and down (mostly down) that it's starting to become annoying.

I guess I'll continue to DVR it and then watch i when I can be bothered, evn if I fall a coupl of weeks behind, m'eh!

You mean it isn't winner take all when one person has 95% of the chips on the last hand?

I'm getting tired of this show. If there was the Thursday competition I used to have to record, I would have already dumped this. I probably will anyway since I'm starting to half pay attention anyhow.

The tattoo thing was just stupid. Duh, there might be others with the same tattoo.

Ordinarily not, but the characters agreed to make it winner take all. I guess they were as tired of the poker game as we were.

I do wonder why the hobbit is going to abide by the fact that he "lost" after the other guy confessed to cheating.

I also love when they have poker scenes that the last hand is always one monster hand beating another monster. They basically ripped the scene last night from Casino Royale (where 2 guys had full boats, the villian the 4-kind, and Bond having the straight flush).

You never see anyone win it all with a pair of 10s.

Re: Flash Forward -- "Playing Cards with Coyote" -- 11/12/09

This show is getting laughably bad now. I'm surprised that it took them so long to push the boys in the lab to better "enhance" the video of the guy in the stadium. Pretty much the only cliche they hadn't touched on yet. I'm sure we'll get a nice picture of the guy's DNA real soon.

The poker game was pretty ridiculous. No tension whatsoever.

Why did Olivia wait and open her gift at the hospital? It would have taken 3 seconds to open it before Mark left.

Re: Flash Forward -- "Playing Cards with Coyote" -- 11/12/09

You guys are focusing on the wrong things. I think the important parts of last night's ep were the conversations amongst our (assumed) antagonists and that murder.

It seems that FF is turning into a Lost-like physics fest. Two things from last night: QED and Alpha (the symbol on the rings). I think most people would assume QED stood for "Quid Erat Demonstratum" -- a fancy way of saying "TA-DA!" But it also stands for Quantum Electrodynamics. Alpha can stand for a lot of things in physics but in the context of QED it probably stands for the universal "fine structure constant". Read all about here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fine-structure_constant

The mystery about α is actually a double mystery. The first mystery — the origin of its numerical value α ≈ 1/137 has been recognized and discussed for decades. The second mystery — the range of its domain — is generally unrecognized.
—Malcolm H. Mac Gregor, Malcolm H. Mac Gregor (2007), The Power of Alpha, World Scientific, p. 69, ISBN 9789812569615

If alpha [the fine structure constant] were bigger than it really is, we should not be able to distinguish matter from ether [the vacuum, nothingness], and our task to disentangle the natural laws would be hopelessly difficult. The fact however that alpha has just its value 1/137 is certainly no chance but itself a law of nature. It is clear that the explanation of this number must be the central problem of natural philosophy.
—Max Born, Arthur I. Miller (2009), Deciphering the Cosmic Number: The Strange Friendship of Wolfgang Pauli and Carl Jung, W.W. Norton & Co., p. 253, ISBN 9780393065329

It's one of the greatest damn mysteries of physics: a magic number that comes to us with no understanding by man. You might say the "hand of God" wrote that number, and "we don't know how He pushed his pencil." We know what kind of a dance to do experimentally to measure this number very accurately, but we don't know what kind of dance to do on the computer to make this number come out, without putting it in secretly!
—Richard P. Feynman (1985), QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter, Princeton University Press, p. 129, ISBN 0691083886
So, what if these guys have found a way of manipulating Alpha?

(To avoid being raped and pillaged the way I was in the Lost forum, let me just say that I'm blue-skying here. All in good fun...)

One more thing and then I'll go.

There's a highly respected physicist named Roger Penrose who has long speculated about the link between quantum gravity and consciousness:

Interesting read. His book, "The Emperor's New Mind" is also a very interesting read.

Re: Flash Forward -- "Playing Cards with Coyote" -- 11/12/09

This is the episode that lost me as a viewer. I am done with the show, as the preview for next week looked awful. None of the characters are all that compelling, and the relentless reminders of the flash forwards got dull several episodes ago. I do not see this show lasting past one season. Every plot seems to be treading water now, and the mystery element is not heavily featured anymore. If this was ABC's attempt to replace Lost, they failed miserably.

Eh, I really like it. But then again, I liked Vanished also (despite the acting) as serials. At least I've still got LOST!

Re: Flash Forward -- "Playing Cards with Coyote" -- 11/12/09

Flave, interesting stuff, but the problem is, unlike LOST, the story is losing its ability to compel us, so the cool physics are lost on the viewer. Too bad, because I still think this show's premiere was downright captivating and the idea of the show is terrific.

But as others have pointed out, the episodes just feel like they planned episode 1 and 24 and everything in between is filler.

This episode was particularly bad in that regard.
  • First of all, the main villain shows up and tells his friend that he had a hard time getting in touch with him...after the last we saw the two together, he drove off with him!
  • The poker game was silly and then after making us wade through it all, they made the last hand winner takes all for no reason! Then the winner admits he cheated and the other guy doesn't care.
  • The doodler is still doodling his love a week later.
  • His wife waits to get to her office desk before opening a gift from her husband when she clearly would have opened it at the hotel or home, especially given the fact that we all knew it was lingerie!
  • The main guy shoots the killer not even considering--as all of us have--that there could be many others with the same tattoo working together.
  • There is evidence they can change the future because the one guy committed suicide (I still find it hard to believe this would be the first worldwide and in all the papers), but I'm not entirely convinced they can change the future. Everything else still seems to happen and I'd bet anyone that the lingerie will show up on the doctor's desk again, which is why she had to open it there, so a janitor could return it or something.

This is just sloppy writing and when we as viewers are figuring out the twists long before the characters on-screen, it makes it trite. At least on LOST, when viewers have theories, they often blow everyone away with a twist or explanation the public at large never saw coming. Not so in this case.

OK, rant aside, I still feel drawn to the show because I want to get to the ending and find out why the heck a kangaroo was hoping down the street. But like Jadzia said, it's losing me.

Re: Flash Forward -- "Playing Cards with Coyote" -- 11/12/09

I am about done with this show. I think this episode may have been my last. I kept on watching up to this point to see if anybody would have the gumption to actually change the future (either through murder or suicide) and I thought perhaps the show would take on a different tone then...you know, become better and more engaging. Wrong. I stuck with this longer than Daybreak...I gave it far too many passes this season. I think this episode put the fork in it for me.

I realize Lost is a cash cow for ABC, but seriously....can we stop trying to duplicate the success of Lost in another series? They have been trying for about 5 years now and fail every time. I wish they would just get back to shows with decent writing and scrap the idea of doing swooping season long story arcs in dramas with a series long intertwining story

Does it not seem obvious that the girl on the pad that the nurse keeps drawing is the girl that started working at the hospital? She looks just like the drawing and there seems to be something between them.

Bryce is a doc, not a nurse.

One other thing....in the very first episode the agents were staking out that restaurant/cafe or whatever and arrested some chick (and maybe the bad guys). Has anything happened at all with that? Or am I even thinking of the same show? LOL

I recall that, and absolutely nothing came of it. You gave me yet another reason to see that this show truly sucks.
