Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)

Seems like most of NBC's 10PM shows (except SVU) are getting Leno numbers. Who are the affiliates going to blame now? Hopefully who they should've blamed in the first place...

By Rick Porter

Fast National ratings for Sunday, March 14, 2010

"The Celebrity Apprentice" got off to an OK start for NBC, building in its second hour, and game show "Minute to Win It" also grew from start to finish. FOX's "Sons of Tucson," meanwhile, was unimpressive.

CBS scored 11.35 million viewers and a 6.8 rating/11 share in households for the night, beating out ABC's 9.1 million and 5.6/9. NBC (7.1 million, 4.3/7) finished third, and FOX was off the pace a bit with 4.3 million viewers and a 2.5/4.

Nice to see Race bounce back after the Oscars took a dent out last week.

A new Simpsons got lower ratings than a Simpsons rerun right afterwards?

I assume the rerun got more viewers from people waiting to tune in to Family Guy...

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)

Daylight Saving Time strikes! Against weaker than normal competition, both House and Chuck dropped 17 percent in adults 18-49 versus last week. House to a 4.0 rating and Chuck sunk to a 1.9.

With CBS in repeats other than a new episode of Rules of Engagement, and ABC running a 20/20 special on The Bachelor and a repeat of Castle, it might have been a night for FOX and NBC to feast but it was not to be. Strong performance with its reruns helped CBS to finish in second place for the night. NBC was again last of the four major broadcast networks.

24 was down from last week too, but only one-tenth of an adults 18-49 ratings point.

Even in reruns CBS’s 9pm comedy block performed. And don’t feel bad Jay Leno, you couldn’t beat repeats of CSI: Miami at 10pm, but neither could a new episode of Law & Order, which lost to the repeat and tied with a repeat of Castle.

But while things were bad for NBC and FOX at 8pm, things looked up for Life Unexpected which delivered its best numbers since it’s second week on January 25 ( women 18-34 (1.8/6), adults 18-34 (1.3/4), women 18-49 (1.4/4) and total viewers (2.11mil).

Details:

How is the the first episode of Chuck - after one of the best ever - goes down that far? Does DST really have that much of an impact on shows?

By Rick Porter
|
March 17, 2010 11:51 AM ET

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, March 16, 2010

"American Idol's" top 12 covered the Rolling Stones Tuesday night and scored a decisive ratings win in the process. The show was down a good amount, however, from last year's first show on the big stage.

FOX averaged 22.6 million viewers and a 12.8 rating/20 share in households for the night -- the best of Tuesday by far, but off by more than 2 million viewers from the comparable show last year (25.2 million, 14.5/22). CBS (15.35 million, 9.6/16) was a solid second. There was a big drop from there to third-place NBC, which drew 6.8 million people and a 4.3/7. ABC (5.7 million, 3.5/6) came in fourth, and The CW (1.5 million, 1.0/2) trailed.

The story was pretty much the same in the adults 18-49 demographic. FOX dominated with an 8.0 rating but was down significantly from last year's 9.2. CBS was the best of the rest at 3.1, followed by NBC at 2.6. ABC averaged a 2.2 and The CW a mere 0.7.

TV ratings: 'American Idol' rules a quiet Wednesday
By Rick Porter

March 18, 2010 11:37 AM ET

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, March 17, 2010

"American Idol" sent its first finalist home Wednesday and delivered FOX a ratings win in the process. Not that there was much competition -- aside from "Idol," no show airing in primetime managed to grab 10 million viewers or break the 3.0 rating mark in adults 18-49.

FOX drew 14 million viewers and an 8.2 rating/14 share in households for the night. That was more than double the viewers of second-place CBS (6.9 million, 4.5/8). NBC (6.7 million, 4.4/8) was close behind in third. ABC (3.8 million, 2.6/4) came in fourth, a little ahead of The CW (3.1 million, 2.1/4).

In the adults 18-49 demo, FOX's 4.5 led the field by a wide margin. NBC took second, albeit with just a 1.8. CBS, 1.7, finished third, followed by The CW, 1.4, and ABC, 1.3.

Wednesday hour by hour:

8 p.m.

FOX: "Human Target" (7.95 million viewers, 4.8/9 households)

NBC: "Mercy" (5.6 million, 3.7/7)
ABC: "Scrubs" season finale (3.5 million, 2.3/4)/"The Middle" rerun (4.2 million, 2.8/5)
The CW: "America's Next Top Model" (3.8 million, 2.6/5)

18-49 leader: "Human Target" (2.3)

FOX: "American Idol" results (20.05 million, 11.6/19)
CBS: "Criminal Minds" rerun (7.65 million, 4.9/8)
NBC: "Law & Order: SVU" rerun (5.1 million, 3.4/6)

The CW: "America's Next Top Model" (3.65 million, 2.5/4)/"High Society" (1.2 million, 0.9/1)

18-49 leader: "American Idol" (6.6)

NBC: "Law & Order: SVU" (9.5 million, 6.2/11)
CBS: "CSI: NY" rerun (7.5 million, 4.9/9)

Scripted series took a backseat to the NCAA Basketball Tournament Thursday night in both ratings and demo. ABC's "FlashForward" returned after a long hiatus and earned mediocre numbers considering that the NBC comedies were its only new non-sports programming competition.

CBS scored with its first round of the tournament, averaging 10.3 million viewers and a 6.5 rating/11 share in households for the night. NBC's comdies followed with 6.6 million and a 4.2/7. Next came ABC (5.8 million, 3.8/7), FOX (5.3 million, 3.5/6) and The CW (1.4 million, 1.0/2).

The Eye Network also nabbed the adult 18-49 demographic win, drawing a 3.7 rating. NBC followed with a 2.7, then ABC, 1.6, FOX. 1.4, and The CW, 0.6.

Thursday's hourly numbers:

8 p.m.

CBS: NCAA Basketball (9.7 million, 6.2/11 households)
ABC: "FlashForward" (6.6 million, 4.3/7)
FOX: "Bones" rerun (6.2 million viewers, 4.2/7)
NBC: "Community" (5.3 million, 3.3/6)/"Parks and Recreation" (4.7 million, 3.0/5)
The CW: "The Vampire Diaries" rerun (1.4 million, 1.0/2)

18-49 leader: NCAA Basketball (3.5)

9 p.m.

CBS: NCAA Basketball (11.7 million, 7.3/12)
NBC: "The Office" (7.6 million, 4.6/8)/"30 Rock" (6.9 million, 4.3/7)
ABC: "FlashForward" (6.5 million, 4.2/7)
FOX: "Fringe" rerun (4.4 million, 2.9/5)
The CW: "Supernatural" rerun (1.4 million, 1.0/2)

18-49 leader: NCAA Basketball (4.2)

10 p.m.

CBS: NCAA Basketball (9.6 million, 5.9/10)
NBC: "The Marriage Ref" (7.6 million, 4.9/9)
ABC: "Private Practice" rerun (4.3 million, 3.0/5)

18-49 leader: NCAA Basketball (3.6)

OMG, those are some awful ratings for FlashForward. It will take a miracle for it to make a 2nd season. I think the new showrunners need to prepare to write episode 22 as a series finale.

CBS once again claimed victory Sunday night, winning every hour in both viewers and households, but ABC's "Thin Ice" results show and the premiere of "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" left the network feeling a little hungry. Also, both NBC's "Minute to Win It" and FOX's "Sons of Tucson" dropped from their premieres a week before.

CBS averaged 13.19 million viewers for the night and an 8.0 rating/13 share, handily beating out ABC's 7.2 million and 4.6/7. NBC was next with 5.6 million and 3.4/6 and then FOX (4.5 million, 2.7/4).

The adults 18-49 demo title also stayed with CBS with a 3.7 rating, far ahead of ABC and FOX's 2.1, tied for second place. Last was NBC, 1.9

Sunday hour by hour:

7 p.m.

ABC: "Thin Ice" results (4.3 million, 2.9/5)
NBC: "Dateline NBC" (3.5 million, 2.2/4)
FOX: "'Til Death" - two episodes (2.9 million, 1.9/3)

18-49 leader: "60 Minutes" (3.9)

8 p.m.

CBS: "The Amazing Race" (12.9 million, 7.9/3)
ABC: "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (7.4 million, 4.5/7)
FOX: "The Simpsons" (5.7 million, 3.3/5)/"The Cleveland Show" (5.0 million, 3.0/5)
NBC: "Minute to Win It" series premiere (5.2 million, 2.9/5)

18-49 leader: "The Amazing Race" (3.2)

9 p.m.

CBS: "Undercover Boss" (12.5 million, 7.3/11)
ABC: "Desperate Housewives" (10.8 million, 6.8/10)
NBC: "The Celebrity Apprentice" (6.3 million, 3.8/6)
FOX: "Family Guy" (6.7 million, 3.9/6)/"Sons of Tucson" (3.9 million, 2.4/4)

18-49 leader: "Undercover Boss" (3.9)

10 p.m.

CBS: "Cold Case" (13.6 million, 8.2/14)
NBC: "The Celebrity Apprentice" (7.3 million, 4.6/8)
ABC: "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" (6.2 million, 4.1/7)

Fox's ratings on Sundays certainly suffer without a football lead-in.

Simpsons had 9 million viewers back in November.

Everything on CBS got a huge bump because of the basketball overrun. Cold Case hasn't had ratings like that for several years now.

The premiere of the 10th "Dancing with the Stars" scored big ratings for ABC Monday night -- big enough to potentially challenge "American Idol" for the week's most-watched show.

"Dancing" was way up from its fall debut and also helped lead-out "Castle" score some of its highest ratings ever. CBS and NBC, meanwhile, took hits to their usual numbers.

ABC averaged 20.2 million viewers and a 12.7 rating/20 share for the night, finishing well ahead of CBS' 11 million viewers and 6.8/11. FOX (6.8 million, 4.2/6) came in third. NBC took fourth with 5.2 million viewers and a 3.3/5, and The CW (1.9 million, 1.3/2) trailed.

ABC also dominated the adults 18-49 demographic with a 5.4 rating. CBS finished a healthy second at 3.9. FOX's 2.2 was good for third, beating out NBC's 1.7 and The CW's 0.9.

Monday hour by hour:

8 p.m.

ABC: "Dancing with the Stars" season premiere (22.6 million viewers, 14.1/22 households)
CBS: "How I Met Your Mother" (8.5 million, 5.3/8)/"Rules of Engagement" (8.5 million, 5.3/8)
NBC: "Chuck" (5.4 million, 3.3/5)
FOX: "House" rerun (5.1 million, 3.3/5)
The CW: "Life Unexpected" (2 million, 1.3/2)

9 p.m.

ABC: "Dancing with the Stars" season premiere (25.1 million, 15.6/23)
CBS: "Two and a Half Men" (14.4 million, 8.6/13)/"The Big Bang Theory" (13.4 million, 7.9/12)
FOX: "24" (8.5 million, 5.2/8)
NBC: "Trauma" (4.3 million, 2.7/4)
The CW: "Gossip Girl" (1.9 million, 1.2/2)

CBS: "CSI: Miami" (10.7 million, 6.8/12)
NBC: "Law & Order" (5.9 million, 3.8/6)

I don't watching DWTS, but love that it helped Castle beat out a new Miami.

"American Idol" improved on its performance from last week, rising by more than a million viewers as it ran away with Tuesday's ratings crown. As things stand now, though, it trails the "Dancing with the Stars" premiere for the week's most-watched honors.

FOX scored 23.8 million viewers and a 13.3 rating/21 share in households for the night, more than doubling the viewer total for second-place CBS (10.7 million, 6.9/11). NBC (7.7 million, 4.7/8) and ABC (6.1 million, 3.8/6) both saw their fortunes rise a bit against CBS' rerun slate. The CW, per usual, brought up the rear with just 1.3 million viewers and a 1.0/2.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 8.3 rating beat the combined total of the other four networks. CBS was the best of the rest at 2.9, followed by ABC at 2.4 and NBC at 1.9. The CW drew a 0.6.

Tuesday's hourly numbers:

8 p.m.

FOX: "American Idol" (22.7 million viewers, 12.8/21 households)
CBS: "NCIS" rerun (12.8 million, 8.1/13)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (7.3 million, 4.4/7)
ABC: "Lost" rerun (4.2 million, 2.8/5)
The CW: "90210" (1.6 million, 1.2/2)

18-49 leader: "American Idol" (7.8)

9 p.m.

FOX: "American Idol" (25 million, 13.9/21)
CBS: "NCIS: Los Angeles" (11.2 million, 7.2/11)
ABC: "Lost" (9 million, 5.4/8)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (8.7 million, 5.2/8)
The CW: "Melrose Place" (1 million, 0.8/1)

18-49 leader: "American Idol" (8.8)

10 p.m.

CBS: "The Good Wife" rerun (8 million, 5.4/9)
NBC: "Parenthood" (7.1 million, 4.5/8)
ABC: "Lost" (ended at 10:06)/"V: The Arrival" (5.1 million, 3.2/6)

18-49 leader: "Parenthood" (2.7)

Vampire Diaries comes back tomorrow night. I wonder how that will do after such a long break. Last time it was I think it went down a little since the Olympics was on.

Wednesday's ratings played out the way they typically do -- the addition of "Survivor" to the night notwithstanding -- which means that the "American Idol" results show gave FOX a sizable victory for the night.

FOX averaged 13.9 million viewers and an 8.1 rating/13 share among households in primetime. CBS, led by the NCAA tournament-displaced "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains," took second with 8.9 million viewers and a 5.6/9. NBC (7.2 million, 4.7/8) beat out ABC (6.3 million, 4.1/7) for third place, and The CW trailed with 2.05 million viewers and a 1.4/2.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX led the way with a 4.5 rating. CBS took second with a 2.4, followed by ABC at 2.3 and NBC at 2.0. The CW scored a 0.9.

I'm really impressed with Modern Family's numbers. Not the strongest but damn good all things considered.

"Dancing with the Stars" fell off some from its premiere but still had a big night Monday, while "Castle" followed last week's series high with an even bigger audience this time around.

ABC dominated primetime with 19.9 million viewers and a 12.5 rating/20 share in households. A night of (mostly) repeats on CBS (8.3 million, 5.2/8) came in second. FOX (6.9 million, 4.3/7) came in third, ahead of NBC's 5.45 million viewers and 3.4/6. The CW (1.85 million, 1.2/2) brought up the rear.

The story was the same in the adults 18-49 demographic, where ABC's 4.9 rating was the night's best by a wide margin. CBS' 2.8 was good for second. FOX finished third at 2.2, followed by NBC, 1.8, and The CW, 0.9.

Monday hour by hour:

8 p.m.

ABC: "Dancing with the Stars" (21.1 million viewers, 13.3/21 households)

NBC: "Chuck" (5.6 million, 3.3/5)
FOX: "House" rerun (5.5 million, 3.5/6)
The CW: "Life Unexpected" (2.05 million, 1.3/2)

18-49 leader: "Dancing with the Stars" (5.0)

9 p.m.

ABC: "Dancing with the Stars" (24 million, 15.1/23)
CBS: "Two and a Half Men" rerun (10.8 million, 6.7/10)/"The Big Bang Theory" rerun (9.8 million, 6.1/9)
FOX: "24" (8.3 million, 5.1/8)
NBC: "Trauma" (4.8 million, 3.0/5)

"American Idol" led Tuesday night's ratings the way it always does, while ABC had some good news and some bad news with its revamped lineup.

The good: The "Dancing with the Stars" results show performed pretty well against "Idol" and helped give "Lost" a bit of a bump over recent weeks as well. The bad: Following "Lost," the return of "V" failed to abduct many new viewers -- although it was at least stronger than "The Forgotten" had been in the time period.

FOX drew 21.3 million viewers and a 12.1 rating/19 share in households in primetime. ABC (10.5 million, 6.6/11) came in second, a little ahead of CBS (9.6 million, 6.3/10). NBC took fourth with 7 million viewers and a 4.4/7. The CW (1.3 million, 0.8/1) was in the back of the pack.

FOX dominated the adults 18-49 demographic with a 7.5 rating, more than doubling the 3.3 for ABC. NBC came in third at 2.7, followed by CBS, 1.8, and The CW, 0.7.

Tuesday hour by hour:

8 p.m.

FOX: "American Idol" (19.1 million viewers, 10.9/18 households)
ABC: "Dancing with the Stars" results (14.1 million, 9.2/15)
CBS: "NCIS" rerun (10.7 million, 6.8/11)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (6.7 million, 4.2/7)
The CW: "90210" (1.5 million, 1.0/2)

18-49 leader: "American Idol" (7.0)

9 p.m.

FOX: "American Idol" (23.5 million, 13.4/21)
CBS: "NCIS: Los Angeles" rerun (10.15 million, 6.5/10)
ABC: "Lost" (10.06 million, 6.2/10)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (8 million, 5.0/8)
The CW: "Melrose Place" (1.1 million, 0.7/1)

18-49 leader: "American Idol" (8.0)

10 p.m.

CBS: "The Good Wife" rerun (8.1 million, 5.5/10)
ABC: "V" (7.3 million, 4.5/8)
NBC: "Parenthood" (6.3 million, 4.1/7)

18-49 leader: "V" (2.9)

Looks like that V countdown didn't help. It's down 2 million from November.

"American Idol" gave FOX an easy ratings victory Wednesday night, but there was otherwise very little to note on an evening when only one other show -- "Law & Order: SVU" -- even sniffed the 10 million-viewer mark.

FOX led the night by wide margin, scoring 14.1 million viewers and an 8.3 rating/14 share in households. NBC (7.3 million, 4.7/8) came in second. CBS took third with 6.6 million viewers and a 4.3/7, finishing a little ahead of ABC (5.8 million, 3.6/6). The CW drew 2.1 million people and a 1.5/3.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 4.4 rating was more than twice as good as second-place ABC's 2.1. NBC was a close third at 2.0. CBS averaged 1.6 in the demo and The CW 0.9.

Wednesday's hourly numbers:

8 p.m.

FOX: "Human Target" (8.2 million viewers, 5.1/9 households)
NBC: "Minute to Win It" rerun (6.3 million, 4.0/7)
ABC: Special - "It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown" (4.9 million, 3.1/6)/"The Middle" (6.2 million, 3.8/7)
CBS: "Old Christine" rerun (4.9 million, 3.3/6)/"Accidentally on Purpose" rerun (4.4 million, 2.9/5)
The CW: "America's Next Top Model" (3.2 million, 2.3/4)

18-49 leader: "Human Target" (2.3)

9 p.m.

FOX: "American Idol" results (20 million, 11.4/18)
CBS: "Criminal Minds" rerun (7.9 million, 5.1/8)
ABC: "Modern Family" (9.3 million, 5.6/9)/"Cougar Town" (6 million, 3.8/6)
NBC: "Law & Order: SVU" rerun (5.6 million, 3.7/6)
The CW: "Fly Girls" (1.2 million, 0.8/1)/"High Society" (861,000, 0.6/1)

18-49 leader: "American Idol" (6.5)

10 p.m.

NBC: "Law & Order: SVU" (10 million, 6.5/11)
CBS: "CSI: NY" rerun (7.2 million, 4.7/8)
ABC: "Ugly Betty" (4.1 million, 2.8/5)

18-49 leader: "Law & Order: SVU" (2.9)
