Well, V lost ~25% of it's premier. That's gonna hurt. I'm not surprised if it goes under 10M next week.

why wouldn't it? above 10 million is relatively high these days.
it wasn't likely V would hold ALL of its curious pilot viewers.
It got decent reviews and is poised to be a decent hit.

over 10M viewers is still pretty good. I think alot of NCIS viewers who normally watched it live probably DVR'd it last week and chose to watch V live and hence the nice debut numbers. Now NCIS is back to over 20M.
Melrose Place looks like it dropped to a season low. They are probably crossing their fingers about next week and hope for a significant ratings boost.
Looks like CBS won the night again as usual.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)
Why doesn't ABC have DWTS as V's lead in and have it go up against the NCIS LA? Doesn't that make more sense?
Oh well, hopefully it continues to do upwards of 10 mil viewers... like the show so far.

I read in an issue of Entertainment Weekly that "V" was going to air the first 4 episodes, then go on a month hiatus or something before showing the rest of the season. Can anyone confirm?

'Jay Leno' and the least DVR'ed shows of the season
By Rick Porter
November 9, 2009 3:57 PM
When NBC was hyping "The Jay Leno Show" over the summer, one of the things executives kept saying is that the show would be "DVR-proof," meaning that people would want to watch live -- commercials and all -- so as not to miss anything.
Well, that's turning out to be true. But it's not quite the bonus the network was hoping it to be.
In both raw numbers and percentage of viewers, "The Jay Leno Show" is among the least-recorded shows of the season so far, according to seven-day DVR figures from the start of the season through Oct. 25. Leno's average of 5.57 million viewers per night goes up less than 4 percent, to 5.8 million, when DVR use is factored in.
Either way, that's not a lot of eyeballs. And with at least one study suggesting that even when they fast-forward, people still register some impression of ads, being "DVR-proof" is not necessarily a good thing. (I've also heard anecdotally that people use the 10 o'clock hour, when Leno airs, to catch up on shows they've recorded earlier or on previous nights. That obviously detracts from both Leno's show and the dramas on ABC and CBS.)
The DVR numbers for Leno's show are, however, in line with a couple of unscripted shows where the emphasis is on seeing things as they happen. ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" gets only about a 4-percent bump for each of its weekly airings, while less than 3 percent of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition's" viewers watch the show more than a day after it airs.
They also have much bigger audiences to start with than "Leno" -- "DWTS" averages just under 17 million same-day viewers on Monday and 13.59 million on Tuesday, while "EM: Home Edition" has an audience of 10.56 million on Sunday nights.
As you might expect, live sports programs are at the very bottom of the heap. NBC's Sunday NFL pre-game show, "Football Night in America," adds fewer than 10,000 people, and "Sunday Night Football" and ABC's prime-time college game on Saturdays each add fewer than 25,000 more viewers.
Leaving out sports, here are the weakest DVR performers for the 2009-10 season through Oct. 25 in terms of viewers added:
"America's Most Wanted" (FOX): Same-day viewers, 5.037 million; 7-day viewers, 5.126 million, +89,000
"Cops" (FOX): 4.397 million to 4.508 million, +111,000
"Brothers" (FOX, Fridays): 2.397 million to 2.517 million, +120,000 >>
"America's Funniest Home Videos" (ABC): 7.992 million to 8.131 million, +139,000
"The Beautiful Life" (The CW): 1.047 million to 1.214 million, +167,000 (canceled after two episodes)
"60 Minutes" (CBS): 13.925 million to 14.111 million, +186,000
"The Jay Leno Show" (NBC, Tuesday): 6.184 million to 6.371 million, +187,000
"Supernanny" (ABC): 4.527 million to 4.717 million, +190,000
"The Jay Leno Show" (Monday): 5.143 million to 5.343 million, +200,000
"The Jay Leno Show" (Thursday): 5.066 million to 5.287 million, +221,000
"The Jay Leno Show" (Friday): 5.543 million to 5.764 million, +221,000
The smallest percentage gains are:
"60 Minutes": +1.3% (13.925 million to 14.111 million)
"America's Funniest Home Videos": +1.7% (7.992 million to 8.131 million)
"America's Most Wanted": +1.8% (5.037 million to 5.126 million)
"Cops": +2.5% (4.397 million to 4.508 million)
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (ABC): +2.7% (10.558 million to 10.844 million)
"The Jay Leno Show" (Tuesday): +3.0% (6.184 million to 6.371 million)
"Dateline" (NBC, Friday): +3.1% (7.167 million to 7.389 million)
"The Jay Leno Show" (Monday) +3.9% (5.143 million to 5.343 million)
"The Jay Leno Show" (Wednesday): +3.9% (5.903 million to 6.133 million)
"The Jay Leno Show" (Friday): +4.0% (5.543 million to 5.764 million)

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)
I guess I don't know how they distinguish between DVR and non-DVR viewing for folks who have DVRs. They claim that sports programming is one of the least-DVR'd. However, I always DVR sports programming (or at least pause 10 minutes or so before watching), just so I can skip all the commercials. When I catch up to live TV, I pause again and watch something else for a while. I assume I'm not the only one who does this. If I were sampled, would this count as watching live or via DVR?
Now, if you watch the sports programming the next day (24 hours ??), they would be included in the delayed weekly dvr ratings, which are then incorporated into the overall ratings (though not the overall ratings that are published in the LA Times above). But of course these ratings are delayed by a week.

I believe the forum has been down.

Look at Survivor's numbers. It was one of the best episodes in the last 7 years (since I've been watching). And Flash Forward is dying a very slow death.

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)
UPDATE: Nielsen is now saying no ratings, either for Monday or last week, until at least Wednesday morning. We'll have them for you then.
We got word this morning that because of a power outage at a Nielsen facility in Florida, the fast national ratings for Monday, Nov. 16 won't be available for at least the next few hours.
The same problem also affects the release of the weekly ratings.
We will post ratings for "Dancing with the Stars," "House" and the rest of Monday's shows as soon as they become available. Nielsen hasn't given its clients an ETA for the figures, however.

I don't know if the above is 100% accurate, but the self editing system in Wikipedia is pretty good.

Nielsen Television Ratings are gathered in one of two ways:
Viewer "diaries", in which a target audience self-records its viewing or listening habits. By targeting various demographics, the assembled statistical models provide a rendering of the audiences of any given show, network, and programming hour.
A more technologically sophisticated system uses Set Meters, which are small devices connected to televisions in selected homes. These devices gather the viewing habits of the home and transmit the information nightly to Nielsen through a "Home Unit" connected to a phone line. The technology-based home unit system is meant to allow market researchers to study television viewing habits on a minute to minute basis, seeing the exact moment viewers change channels or turn off their TV. In addition to set meters, individual viewer reporting devices, such as people meters, have allowed the company to separate household viewing information into various demographic groups, but so far Nielsen has refused to change its distribution of data of ethnic groups into subgroups, which could give more targeted information to networks and advertisers.
Changing systems of viewing have impacted Nielsen's methods of market research. In 2005, Nielsen began measuring the usage of digital video recordings such as TiVo. Initial results indicate that time-shifted viewing will have a significant impact on television ratings. The networks are not yet figuring these new results into their ad rates at the resistance of advertisers.
Another criticism of the measuring system itself is that it fails the most important criteria of a sample: it is not random in the statistical sense of the word. Only a small fraction of the population is selected and only those that actually accept are used as the sample size. There are only 25,000 total American households that participate in the Nielsen daily metered system.[8] The resident population of the United States as of 2009 is about 307 million people.[9] As a result, the total number of Nielsen homes only amounts to 0.0000814332248% of the total American population, meaning that 99.9999186% of Americans have no input at all into what is actually being watched.

TV ratings: CBS rolls Tuesday; Heather Locklear doesn't help 'Melrose Place'
By Rick Porter
November 18, 2009 8:54 AM
Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009
The top of Tuesday's ratings looked pretty much the same -- CBS cruised to a win. Farther down the list, though, ABC's "V" slipped again and Heather Locklear's first "Melrose Place" appearance didn't do much to boost the show.
(The CW does note that "Melrose Place" drew its biggest audience since Oct. 6, but not by much. Tuesday's show drew 1.54 million viewers, 158,000 more than last week and just 45,000 more than two weeks ago.)
CBS easily won the night with 15.9 million viewers and a 10.0 rating/16 share in households. ABC (10.9 million, 7.0/11) came in second. NBC (8.3 million, 4.8/8) finished third, while FOX grabbed fourth with 6 million viewers and a 3.8/6. The CW (1.8 million, 1.3/2) was in the back of the pack.
CBS also snagged the top spot among adults 18-49 with a 3.4 rating. NBC's 3.0 was good for second, beating out the 2.7 for ABC and 2.4 for FOX. The CW could only muster a 0.9.
Tuesday's hourly results:
8 p.m.
CBS: "NCIS" (20.2 million viewers, 12.3/19 households)
NBC: Special - "Merry Madagascar" (9.3 million, 5.0/8)
ABC: "V" (9.26 million, 6.0/9)
FOX: "So You Think You Can Dance" (6.5 million, 4.2/6)
The CW: "90210" (2.1 million, 1.5/2)
18-49 leader: "NCIS" (4.1)
9 p.m.
ABC: "Dancing with the Stars" (15.9 million, 10.2/16)
CBS: "NCIS: Los Angeles" (14.8 million, 9.3/14)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (9.5 million, 5.5/8)
FOX: "So You Think You Can Dance" (5.4 million, 3.5/5)
The CW: "Melrose Place" (1.54 million, 1.1/2)
18-49 leader: "The Biggest Loser" (3.7)
10 p.m.
CBS: "The Good Wife" (12.7 million, 8.4/15)
ABC: "The Forgotten" (7.7 million, 5.0/9)
NBC: "The Jay Leno Show" (6.1 million, 3.9/7)
18-49 leader: "The Good Wife" (2.6)

Re: Primetime TV Ratings - Part IV (2009-2010 Season)
It's interesting that Smallville is getting higher numbers on Friday than either 90210 or Melrose. I suppose that could help the case for a S10.
