So, I'm catching up on Doctor Who...

I'm midway through the third season, and so far I have only really enjoyed the Moffat episodes and maybe a handful of others. Am I the only one? I like David Tennant, he and Steven Moffat are the only reasons that I'm still watching.

Another thing that doesn't do it for me: they always seem to make a big deal about the Daleks and Cybermen showing up and I don't like them that much.

I think the Steven Moffat episodes tend to be regarded among the best in the series and are definitly my favorite. Fortunately Moffat is taking over as the head writer and executive producer for next season (season 5).

If you like his style you may check out the 2007 BBC mini-series Jekyll which was written by Moffat.

Yes, I'm very excited for the next season due to him taking over.

I just watched Human Nature/The Family of Blood and Blink and they were fantastic. I guess I just hit a stretch of 7 episodes that I didn't like too much. Blink is one of my favorite episodes of TV now, period.

Thanks for the tip on Jekyll. I will watch that as soon as I finish up Doctor Who and Torchwood. I looked Steven Moffat up and I didn't realize that he was the writer for Coupling, which I was going to watch but will now watch much sooner.

Coupling is great, but it's a very different kind of writing from Doctor Who. Going from one to the other because of Moffat would be like going from Raiders of the Lost Ark to Saving Private Ryan because you like Spielberg. Both are geat, but they are very different.

If you think the show is just ok now, then don't want the original show.

It's a cool show but I only get to watch it on People & Arts. Really need to get some season sets.

BTW, why did Christopher Eccleston only last one season? I've read his tenure ended badly but I've never been able to find any details. WHat happened exactly?

It had been a planned departure. Christopher Eccleston didn't want to do more than one season of the show.

I am a couple of episodes through season 3, with the next episode being Daleks in Manhattan. I am really looking forward to the Blink episode, since I've been hearing how brilliant it is ever since it originally aired. I am only 6 or 7 episodes away from it, but I want to watch everything in order.

And I loved Jekyll. Watched it a couple of years ago, and still catch the reruns when I see them being broadcast.

 Really?

I prefer the classic series over the new iteration any ol' day. But I guess that's because I started with that one...

But, unfortunately, David Tennant is leaving before then. It's a real shame that we aren't getting at least one whole season of the series with both Tennant and Moffat.

Re: So, I'm catching up on Doctor Who...

Just finished Season Three. After watching the first two or three episodes of Season Three a number of months ago, I just had no interest in continuing with the series, although I did prefer Martha over Rose (I never did like Rose very much). Anyway, given the lack of things to watch over the summer, I finally decided to pick up where I left off. While the first few episodes were only okay at best, the season really picked up towards the end of the season, especially with the appearance of:
Spoiler:
John Simm as The Master

That whole particular storyline is probably my favorite one from Doctor Who so far. I also loved the inference towards the end that:
Spoiler:
Jack Harkness is the Face Of Boe

I enjoyed that, as well. :)

And I second the recommendations for Jekyll and Coupling. I thought Jekyll was brilliant. The first three series of Coupling is one of the funniest sitcoms I've ever watched. The fourth series lost one of the main characters, and I feel it ruined the show.

Re: So, I'm catching up on Doctor Who...

I totally agree about Jekyll and Coupling, easily two of my favorite BBC shows (especially Coupling). The early series of Coupling are also amongst the funniest things that I've ever seen. I'm not someone that actually laughs out loud a lot, but this series had a couple of LOL moments in every episode.

As for Jekyll, wasn't there supposed to be a second season somewhere along the way? I remember reading that Moffatt had an idea for a second season, but I don't think that it progressed anywhere. I have no idea how popular the show was ratings-wise, so I guess that might have been a factor in the decision whether or not to bring it back.

We just did these three this week, and Blink has to be some of the most stunning sci-fi ever created.

The 3rd season started good, but started to bog down, esp with the disappointing Dalek 2-parter and then this trio of eps just paid for all. What an incredible piece of fiction, this is the defense against the "television is a vast wasteland" argument, something that shows intelligence and thoughtfulness and can become part of modern mythology.

And I laughed so hard at "You only have 17 DVDs?" (see link below...)

I think they mean AMERICAN television. ;)

I didn't like S4 much when it aired, but I really fell in love with it once I had it on DVD. Hope you continue to enjoy!

Do you mean The Infinite Quest?

It's set sometime during Series 3 of the show, and originally aired in segments spaced out across the same time period Series 3 aired.

For simplicity, just watch it after you watch Series 3 of the show.

Thanks, that's what we ended up doing. We cracked open the next box set and watched Time Crash (we hadn't watched any Davison stuff yet, I only knew of him from reading about the show), and then we started Voyage of the Damned but my wife fell asleep.
