Hung *Series Premiere* - "01" - 6/28/09

Spoiler:
Years ago, as a student at Detroit's West Lakefield High School, Ray Drecker was athletic, popular, and destined for success. Today, as a West Lakefield teacher and coach of the varsity basketball team (which is on an unprecedented losing streak), he's underpaid, uninsured, and embittered that his wife of 20 years (Anne Heche) has left him for her dermatologist. After a fire damages the rundown lakeside home he inherited from his parents, Ray's sagging fortunes reach an all-time low when his twin children Darby and Damon, who had been living with him, move in with their mom and her smug hubby, Ronnie Haxon (Eddie Jemison). Lonely, run-down and at wit's end, Ray decides to attend a local self-help class whose mantra is to identify a personal winning tool to market for financial success. After a not-so-fulfilling encounter with a fellow attendee--an ex-flame and would-be poet named Tanya Skagle (Jane Adams)--Ray has a eureka moment. With the help of Tanya, Ray resolves to take advantage of his greatest asset, in hopes of changing his fortunes in a big way.

Reviews have been mixed. Herc from AICN liked it. Maureen Ryan from the Chicago Tribune didn't, but she compared it to Breaking Bad which she also doesn't like.

Tonght's ep is 44 min, it's off next week along with True Blood for 4th of July weekend, and then when it comes back on the 12th it will be in the half hour between True Blood and the new season of Entourage.

My guess is it will have lots of T&A but according to reviews I read, no Dirk Diggler reveals.

Excited to check it out. I worked on the pilot as an extra so wondering if there is a blink and you miss scene of me in the crowd at a high school basketball game.

As with nearly all of HBO's original programming, I plan on tuning in. Alexander Payne directed the pilot, fyi.

its only a 30 minutes show (except for the pilot)?
I thought for sure this one would be an hour long show.

Okay, I LOVED it.

Thomas Jane was great. The characters seem like they can be pretty deep and not just cliches. And the best part "I got a baseball scholarship to the University of Central Florida"

I was very disappointed. This brought neither the funny OR the sex. Seems like it's trying to be Californication and it doesn't even come close. I'll check it out one more time on the 12th while waiting for Entourage, but this may be one of those rare HBO shows I just can't get into.

I liked it, but I also like anything Jane is in which helps.

I did chuckle when I saw his ex's new husband, was the guy he 'tortured' in The Punisher.

Well if I am interested in a premise, I will always give it more than the pilot. I will be tuning in. It was OK, but I definitely think it could get better now that the setup is out of the way.

Poor Thomas Jane. He just wants his kids back.

The guy also lives in Detroit(or near). How can you not feel sorry for him?

Wow those kids are some kind of ugly. And man time has not been Ann Heche's friend.

Ann Heche? Shit, I didn't recognize her, was that his ex?

Loved this one...Jane was awesome, excellent use of Detroit and it totally felt like an episode of "Election" the series. I am in for this one.

Found it pretty boring - not very funny at all - probably the least awesome thing Payne has done IMO. I'll give it a few more eps because I like the cast, but I didn't feel like anyone was particularly good here... and there is no way that Tom Jane and Anne Heche have kids that UGLY together.

The person who reviewed this for the Houston Chronicle said: Ah, the kids. Very un-network, which is refreshing.

Not really. This might work if the lead and his ex-wife were regular lookign people. But they aren't (at least Heche wasn't in her youth). It doesn't work. And it looks like the boy has pumped a gallon of collogen into his lips. Seriously. I was put off by how unattractive these kids were.

I think the casting of the kids was maybe my favorite part. You mean not everyone has anorexic runway model children?! But they're on TV?!?!

Not a big Thomas Jane fan, and this role surprises me a bit, but I think that's why it works. I thought he was great.

"Fucker." rotfl
