The biggest problem are the shows that have been on only for a year or two should never make a top 100 list. I'm glad two and a half men didn't make the list. And they chose the campy live tv batman over the far superior animated batman series??? There are also plenty of other episodes of Buffy that should be on there instead of the musical. "Hush", and "Becoming" come to mind. Same thing with Angel and especially The Shield. "Possible kill screen" was a great episode and all but it really didn't do anything groundbreaking. "The Pilot" should've made the list. I agree with the 24, Party of five, Seinfeld, and family guy episodes. |
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
Episodes 1-60 should be The Wire.
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
I didn't scrutinize the list too closely, but it appears as if each show is only listed once, correct? So then in essence they've ranked 100 shows' top episodes.
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
At least Lost, rightfully, has an episode near the top of the list.
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
I think the Dawson's Creek pilot episode should have made the top 100. It was not only written very well with strong characters, but it changed the landscape of teen dramas for the future....despite what the show became after that. :P

Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
as with any list, there are always going to be great picks and terrible ones.

Picking Slap Bet for How I Met Your Mother was dead on though. |
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
The last time I remember they did a list, Star Trek "City on the Edge of Forever" came in around #15. Now it's #80 behind Charlie's Angels "Angels in Chains"? The list is a joke.

Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
"The Contest" is one of the few Seinfeld episodes that I actually find myself still enjoying after having seen it a few times, so I agree it should be on the list. But even on this list of selections, I think it's overrated. Nice to see they included that episode of Magnum, P.I. that's inevitable referred to as "The One Where Magnum Has Flashbacks While Treading Water." "College" was always the episode of The Sopranos I showed people who hadn't watched it yet but wanted to get a feel for the series; not sure it's the greatest of the series, but certainly it's a great represenation of the series.
Methinks that was the essence of this list, really, because while "Subway" is good--and has received many well-earned accolades over the years--I've always felt that "Three Men and Adena" was more compelling. But then, it's hard to isolate that episode from the Adena Watson arc of the first season of Homicide: Life on the Street. Good call on "I Say Potatoe, You Say Potato" from Murphy Brown. Just reading that title, and without watching any of that series in nearly a decade, I can immediately recall Candace Bergin yelling to her TV, "Do I look glamorous?!" That was the moment when the show set in D.C. waded into real life politics in a way not seen again until Tina Fey aped Sarah Palin. |

Exactly. And they didn't even get the right episode for a lot of the shows. The musical Scrubs episode, seriously?
The embryo episode of Friends? The "Trapped in the Closet" episode of South Park?? That wasn't even close to being the best SP episode of the season! These lists will never please everyone, I know, but this one seems particularly clueless. Of course, they had to stick the everfucking Chuckles shitfest in there too. |
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
I never understood to make lists like this. It's entirely arbitrary based on a lot of varying factors. It's hardly authoritative. And what purpose does it serve? Other than sparking debate?
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
Um..."The One With the Embryos" is THE best Friends episode of all time. That's the "gameshow" one. A classic in every way.
Of the shows I watch on here, I think they picked good ones. I would have picked "My Screw Up" over "My Musical" on Scrubs, but other than that I'm fine with this. |
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
I like Mad Men, but saying it had the #8 episode of all time is ridiculous.
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
 to Freaks and Geeks being mentioned.
 to it being the wrong episode. |
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
No love for Deadwood??
And Six Feet Under should be higher up. |
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
It seems like for some of these they went with "concept" episodes instead of best episodes. The musical episodes of Scrubs and Buffy and the animation episode of Farscape were interesting but not what I would consider the best of any of them.
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
The Rick James episode of "Chappelle's Show" didn't make it either.
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
They picked the correct episodes of "Taxi" and "WKRP", but they didn't rank them high enough.
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
As far as I'm concerned, they picked the right episodes for the following shows:
24 Lost Friends Buffy the Vampire Slayer The Sopranos ER Six Feet Under The Wire Taxi WKRP Arrested Development The West Wing How I Met Your Mother The X-Files Battlestar Galactica Gilmore Girls Where they got it wrong: The Simpsons (Marge vs. the Monorail would be my pick) Freaks and Geeks (Test and Breasts) Heroes (Five Years Gone) Family Ties (A for Alex) Scrubs (My Screw Up) The Big Bang Theory (The Nerdvana Annihilation) |
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
Seinfeld should have about 10 episodes on this list:)
'The Contest' was so groundbreaking at the time, or should I say taboo at the time, as TV was much different back in 1992 when it aired. At that time, you just didn't do a show about masturbation, and what made that episode more classic was they never used the word once! I don't know what the name of the Seinfeld Episode was, but the one where George and Jerry are suspected by a college writer of being Gay, and she publishes the articles and gets picked up by the AP. The classic line, "I'm not gay.......not that there's anything wrong with that!" Best episodes of other favorite TV shows I loved: The Sopranos - 'The Pine Barrens.' 'College' is a classic epsiode, but 'The Pine Barrens' is one of the funniest hours of TV I have every seen with Paulie and Christopher! Family Ties - Where Mr & Mrs Keaton go away for the weekend, Alex and the family rent out the house to all the alumni for the Homecoming Game. I remember Skippy was the Bellboy, "Hello Keating Manner!" King of Queens - The one where Doug takes a picture of his 'be-front' at a Wedding, and the Bride & Groom see the picture! |

My favorite part of that episode is when Steven and Elyse come home and see the kangaroo in the living room. Michael Gross nailed the following line perfectly: "There was a kangaroo..... in my living room."
|
Re: TV guides top 100 tv episodes
I'm really glad to see ER's Love's Labour Lost up there, which would probably be my #1.
I think Scrubs should have definitely been either My Screw Up or My Lunch, both of which are way way better than My Musical. |
