Synopsis:

Spoiler:

The first-season finale includes an appearance by the much-discussed, but never seen, Massive Dynamics founder, William Bell (Leonard Nimoy), the return of David Robert Jones and a mysterious vanishing act by Walter.

Looking forward to seeing Nimoy. Just so you won't lose your mind Tuesday night if you DVR the show, please do yourself a favor and pad an extra 5-10 minutes due to Idol.

Thus turned into one of the best surprises of the season. Can't wait!

Also, I just rewatched the pilot, and I realized the Massive Dynamic lady had a robotic arm. She said William Bell designed it for her. And yet in the second episode (and I'm assuming the rest since I forget) her arm is fine. Hmmmmmmm!

it's not fine. if you notice, she always wears a long glove on the arm that's robotic. it's like they decided it wasn't important enough anymore other than to keep her wearing the glove.

I do believe (at least in the second episode) that she was not wearing any glove and had plain ole human skin on that hand. I'll have to skim through that episode again.

You're right though, I do recall a glove in most episodes. I'm rewatching them all with my little brother, who caught the second to last episode and got addicted.

I wonder if the parallel universe version of William Bell sports a goatee?

I was pretty excited they announced Nimoy in a recurring role, and thought he was a great choice for Bell. That was tempered somewhat when I saw him looking like death-warmed-over in the new Star Trek.

Well, he is old.

I hear this episode is a game changer and that it sets it in a new direction next year.

To me, he didn't just look old in the new Star Trek, he looked dying. I guess there's a point at which people look in such frail health that, the more I love them, the more it pains me to see them that way on the screen. It doesn't happen with everyone, but I think Nimoy's crossed that line for me. Despite the fact that his character was treated with great respect and dignity, there's something more *sad* than dignified when I'm taken out of the movie wondering how much longer he has to live.

I guess my main point here is that I hope they use him carefully and well. And spareingly. And spare us a lot of closeups of his ravaged face and empty-looking eye sockets, unlike the movie in question.

Well JJ Abrams is involved, so does that surprise you? We have already been dropped some pretty substantial hints via asides and throw away comments about what is "coming". Still - can't wait!

He is starting to look very fragile.
From what I have read, they cut down the arc that they had planned so he could play William Bell.

Nimoy didn't look THAT fragile on his little cameo during last weeks SNL

Re: Fringe -- Season Finale -- "There's More than One of Everything" -- 5/12/09

I agree. He didn't look that bad in Star Trek or on SNL, imo, but then I didn't follow him all that closely in the old days.

He may not be as peppy as Shatner still is, but then Shatner at 78 isn't the norm. (Never realized that the age difference between Shatner and Nimoy is only 4 days.)

Looking forward to this, Fringe turned into a surprise favorite of mine. Filled in the otherwise bland Tuesday night spot very nicely!

A popular phrase used in these threads these days can be used again...

"There's no coming back from that." --- in reference to...

Spoiler:
Mr. Jones and the deja vú portal.

Edit to add: Do you think that Peter...

Spoiler:
... is the Peter from the other realm/dimension? The tombstone with Peter's name on it leads me to believe that the Peter that we know is the second one... the "Two of Everything."

I got a heavy Half-Life 2 vibe with the end of the episode, if it managed to maintain that sense of trippiness I would be hooked on this show. Nifty final shot.

while i definitely agree it wasn't as big of a shock for me as I was expecting. given everything they've said about alternate universes
Spoiler:
just having the WTC standing being the only obvious notable difference didn't do much for me. I was expecting the world to be very noticeably different. Though the paper headline was somewhat interesting about Obama moving into a new Whitehouse. Maybe in that universe the towers weren't struck but the Whitehouse was? Obviously some other stuff must be different since the truck that crossed through was never made in our world but still.
At any rate, I think the other previously mentioned "whoa" moment was a bigger surprise even if it didn't have quite the build up. All in all though a solid finale and I'm very interested in seeing where they go with it next season.

Being a New Yorker, the final shot was very chilling. What a great finale. I'm left wanting to know a lot more, but I know I can't. For now, at least... :(

Bring on season 2!

Also, I do think Peter is the second of the "two of everything." Especially after the gravestone reveal.

I called it as soon as she went to look out the window.

So now we have X-Files meets Sliders.

Not my favorite episode. Really the only thing new we got was the tombstone, and we didn't get either a lot of questions or answers. Or character advancement.

Yeah, a nice final shot. But other than that and the tombstone, not so much.

Exactly. Anyone think she "slid" through more than one alternate to get there as the people in the elevator shifted a few times? The Peter she knew is obviously from a place different than she is now. Should be an interesting 2nd season as well as a LONG anxious wait!

This show certianly got a million times better than when it started!!!!

Bingo. With some Wild Wild West science thrown in.

So Peter died as a boy, which is why our Peter doesn't remember being sick or having a coin collection. Walter went and grabbed this Peter from another dimension.

When Walter was back in the institution earlier in the season and saw himself on another balcony, was he seeing an alternate reality version of himself?

And I'm not offended by seeing the WTC standing, but I don't know if I'm exactly comfortable with it being used as a plot point.

I could feel that reveal coming given what we know about Peter's childhood and given Walter's speech to him in the car regarding the coin.
