I noticed that too. Obviously when they did that gag in the pilot they weren't expecting JD to admit that it was him 8 years later. Not to mention at the time they had it so that the janitor was just a figment of JD's imagination. So I can understand the plot hole, but they showed the scene in the opening of the finale! They could have easily come up with a better explanation.

Janitor: Door's broke. Fifth time or so it won't open.
J.D.: Maybe there's a penny stuck in there.
Janitor: Why a penny?
J.D.: I don't know...
Janitor: Did you stick a penny in there?
J.D.: No, no, I was just making small talk.
Janitor: If I find a penny in there... I'm takin' you down.
There's no proof that the penny was actually found up at the top of the door where Janitor was digging around. I dunno, just trying to make sense of a potential plot hole that's not really worth analyzing.

The show had the comedy/drama balance figured out from the start and managed to do it well throughout the majority of the series. Not only that, but it managed to do both comedy and drama better than most shows that couldn't even get either right.
Definitely start from the beginning of the series. I'm sure the DVD sets for the earlier seasons can be had cheap these days. My quick rundown of the series overall: S1 was really good, but had a few ho-hum episodes and the production quality itself wasn't quite as polished as the following seasons; S2-S4 are easily the best of the series; S5 is great overall, but the comedic tone of the show started getting a bit more goofy; S6 got really goofy and the overall quality was clearly starting to suffer; S7 was pretty mediocre and contains a lot of the worst episodes of the series (also a short season due to the writer's strike); but for S8 they really bounced back and I'd rate this season at about the same level as S5.

Just watched the finale this afternoon. Got a little choked up at the end. Its like a family member dying.
Has it been mentioned that the penny the janitor was wearing was dated 2006?
Loved all the cameos at the end, especially Colin Hay, but no Gift Shop Girl.

While we on a "Scrubs" lovefest, here are a couple of recent articles:
One that backs up what my surgeon friend's been saying since the show's beginning (that "Scrubs" is the most realistic medical show on TV): http://www.slate.com/id/2217711/
And an interview with Bill Lawrence: http://www.avclub.com/articles/bill-lawrence,27619
Regarding the show continuing:
AVC: What are your thoughts on the sustainability of the show after this season? Zach Braff is leaving, and right now there's only speculation that you will be back.
BL: Oh shoot man, oh no. I’m back and forth on it. When I originally pitched it, Steve McPherson, who now runs the network, was the president of the studio; and when we pitched it. we pitched it as a sitcom like ER, where you could rotate cast in and out. If you couple that up with the fact that ABC owns it and makes money from it when it’s on the air, I could see it going forward. Mostly because there’s like six live-action comedies on TV now, and if there’s an opportunity to have a hundred and five people have a job for another year, that’d be great.
AVC: Would you be involved?
BL: I’m a control freak, man. I’d try to something else, but I’d work on it a little, if it went on. That being said, if it goes forward in any incarnation without the old characters—and especially since we wrote, essentially, a series finale this year—it’d have to be a completely different show so people… I’m not a big fan of shows like Happy Days, “Hey Richie’s gone, and everybody else is gone, but we’re gonna pretend it’s the same show.” For me, ER pulled it off well. Do like what ER did, which is “There’s a couple characters for stability, but otherwise we’re telling different stories and have different people on the show.” Then, uh, it wouldn’t bother me, because it’ll either work or it won’t.
AVC: That's pretty open ended.
BL: I don’t get hung up. I was talking to a friend about this, because people—it’s only television—get hung up on “Waah, what about the legacy of the show?” I’m like “Fucking, the legacy of the show? Who cares?” I mean, I’m proud of the show and I thought it was great, but who am I to say [no to] doing another year with new actors if they wanted to, in these economic times, that many people getting to work? There are a lot of talented comedy writers out of work. I think this has just as good a chance of being good as anything else. The only thing I wouldn’t let happen is have it pretend it’s the same; that would be a cop-out.

What a fantastic ending to a show that has entertained me for many years. I thought the finale was pitch perfect. Great lines, loved Hooch, the Book of Rants, Cox's speech to Sunny. Just simply amazing.
I think it's a testament to Lawrence and the writing staff that no one on here is saying bringing back Scrubs for a 9th season is a horrifically awful idea. It could work (only if McGinley and Flynn stay)...what a tribute to the supporting cast and world they built up. More of Ted, Nurse Shirley Roberts, the Todd, Lady, Gooch, Jordan Godzilla Sullivan...that would be good. And I think Sunny, Jo and Kevin could be the focus.
Don't know that I want it back after ending on such a high note, though. But I'd probably watch.
Where do you guys think this ranks in the pantheon of finales? Nothing will ever touch Newharts, but I think it went off with the grace of the Cosby Show, which I loved.

I love that they included so many of the extras who've been working on the same set for years in the concluding good-bye sequence.

Interesting tidbit I noticed. My Tivo cut off the last few seconds so I went online to finish it. The broadcast version, at the end, Bill Lawrence says, "That's a season wrap on Zach Braff." The online version is cut into two parts (and I guess ready for syndication), and Lawrence says, "That's a series wrap on Zach Braff." I thought I was hearing things so I re-watched both endings and they are definitely different.

I've been looking around for the Peter Gabriel cover of Book of Love, but I have yet to find a legal way of getting it without paying for the whole "Shall We Dance" album from either Amazon or iTunes. Great song!
I haven't actually watched Scrubs in ages, but I checked out the ending on YouTube and it looked like a really good wrap up.

Thanks and thanks... I missed the earlier discussion about it not being available. I think the labels might make more money still by allowing people to download certain really popular tracks instead of trying to force them into buying whole albums. Same thing happened when I originally tried looking for Sia's "Breathe Me" after seeing the finale of Six Feet Under, but finally it was made available.

Another interesting tidbit, there's now a commentary of "My Chief Concern" on ABC's web site, along with the regular version of the episode. (That would be the second-to-last or penultimate episode ) The commentary is Zach Braff (that episode's director and Bill Lawrence. They talk about Scrubs continuing on after the current show has ended like it's a done deal. At one point, Braff says he will definitely return to direct episodes of, "Scrubs: Part Deaux."

No one noticed during the end 'gag reel' they mentioned something to the affect of 'Season wrap for Braff, Season Wrap for Reyes'. No 'Series'
And that was Sam as an adult? He looked more like Turks possible kid than J.D/Kims

I wonder why Doug was not featured in these final episodes?
I've also wondered if there was some explanation as to why Keith was dropped so suddenly.
It surprised me to see him in the lineup.

These are two guys that I wondered about too. I would suspect that as they were not regular players on the show (or in Keith's case he was featured less because of the story line) they had lined up other work and just weren't available. But your guess is as good as mine.

Still one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. I love that they get together regularly. They really seemed like friends (or very friendly with each other) in real life.

I guess it’s good.
The show has been off the air for a decade.
I dont think I’m being a stick in the mud.
Show just doesn’t feel relevant anymore.
while it was on I loved every minute of it.
Some of them got together recently, ok.
I guess I’m just unaffected by it.
Sorry I didn’t pop in to say how amazing these pics are.
