Seinfeld syndication presented in "HD" format

I just noticed this week that my FOX affiliate here in DC, WTTG 5, has started showing its daily syndicated episodes of Seinfeld in HD. It is actually being presented in 720p, but I was sort of impressed. It wasn't as pristine and one would expect of a show presented in high definition, but the framing was actually pretty darn good/not noticeably cropped. Has anyone else seen this?

I've steered clear from WTTG lately because the feed kept breaking up, but maybe I'll give it another go this evening. I'm always up for Seinfeld.

TBS has been showing them like this for a month or two. I like it a lot, so much so that I've enjoyed rewatching episodes in this format.

There were a few times I noticed things cropped off, but it would only be found like other losers like me who know every inch of the show. Well worth the better picture.

This was supposed to start January 26, but now I'll check out Fox 29 Buffalo to see if they've got it now.

I enjoy watching it too. I may actually record a few since I only catch em when they're on.

It did start the 26th. A lot of affiliates don't yet have the equipment needed to air syndicated shows in HD (it's still pretty expensive). If your affiliate wasn't airing it in HD last week, it's likely because they're not equipped for it, not because Sony wasn't providing it. The affiliate that airs the show here in Albany had it in HD last week.

it's still pretty much OAR. Seinfled was shot on film.

not in Philly yet.

I'm finding it hit or miss.

Sometimes close ups or over-the-shoulder shots seem too tight, but wider shots of Jerry's apartment with more than two people in the shot are great.

One of the first episodes shown here was the one where Elanie dates a communist, which also featured Kramer's pal Mickey. At times he was just barely half-a-head on screen.

That makes Buffalo's Fox 29 (WUTV) not airing it all the more confusing, because they do air reruns of "Two and a Half Men" right afterward in HD.

It airs at 10pm, so hopefully it will be HD this time, but if not then who knows what's going on since they have the capability.

Just because it was shot on film doesn't make it OAR. What counts is how it was framed, and "Seinfeld" was framed for 4:3.

Re: Seinfeld syndication presented in "HD" format

I found screenshots somewhere on the net awhile ago that compared the orinal 4:3 to the new 16:9 picture and the HD version is VERY slightly cropped on top and bottom. Not OAR but I enjoy watching the 16:9 version much more.

What you enjoy watching more doesn't make it OAR. I hope no one in this thread would complain about P&S for people who liked having their TV filled.

OK you're not paying attention to what I'm saying. In my last post I said
"Not OAR but I enjoy watching the 16:9 version much more."
I dont really understand your P & S comment but the new televised HD versions of Seinfled cannot be compared to pan and scan, "stretch o vision", or the 4:3 image zoomed in on. Seinfeld was shot so that the 4:3 was the primary picture, with enough over shoot to allow a 16:9 transfer to be made

TBS air this and Raymond in the remastered HD. I believe they were involved in the remastering, but I don't recall where I heard that. I love the quality and It makes me glad I didn't buy the Seinfeld DVD sets (BluRay please!!!). I wonder what other shows could benefit from this?

As SteveOVig said, you can watch it in HD on TBS.

I love it because of the clearer picture.

Re: Seinfeld syndication presented in "HD" format

Fortunately Fox 29 Buffalo finally got them.

The image is very grainy, and doesn't benefit from any added detail because of that, but it was very impressive!

The episode shown was when Kramer gets in a fight with a monkey and has to apologize, while also getting on Jerry's case to say 'Thank You' to Alec Berg, who gave them free hockey tickets. And of course there was face-painting David Puddy and George dating a half-deaf woman who works at the zoo Kramer was involved with.

If I had the DVD sets, I'd be royally pissed about these new versions of the show. I suppose the one comfort would be that these HD versions are the shorter syndicated edits. Perhaps if they do release these on Blu-ray they will be the full length episodes the DVDs had.

I thought Everybody Loves Raymond was shot in HD from the get-go.

Well how about the widescreen movies where the mattes were removed to fill up a 4:3 screen? Do you also prefer those since you're getting more information?

Is anyone arguing that the additional picture is what they enjoy, or is the argument that the picture quality is much better and outweighs the lack of OAR in this case?

It's a sitcom. I think it's okay to let the OAR issue slide a little in this case, instead of looking for a reason to argue over it.
